Nurse scientists are increasingly recognizing the necessity of conducting research with community groups to effectively address complex health problems and successfully translate scientific advancements into the community. Although several barriers to conducting research with community groups exist, community-based participatory research (CBPR) has the potential to mitigate these barriers. CBPR has been employed in programs of research that respond in culturally sensitive ways to identify community needs and thereby address current health disparities. This article presents case studies that demonstrate how CBPR principles guided the development of (a) a healthy body weight program for urban, underserved African American women; (b) a …

Nurses’ Knowledge And Attitudes Toward Implementation Of Electronic Medical Records, Cathy H. Abell, Tonya Bragg-Underwood, Lori Alexander, Caitlyn Elizabeth Abell, Vanessa Burd
International Journal of Faith Community Nursing
With the growth of Faith Community Nursing (FCN), one topic that needs further exploration is documentation. This includes the use of electronic medical records (EMRs). Nurses play a vital role in the planning and implementation of EMRs in the acute care setting and will also play a key role in Faith Community Nursing Programs that stand alone or partner with a health care agency. Individual computer expertise and/or attitude and knowledge of EMRs could be important in the successful implementation. Researchers utilized a modified version of the EMR questionnaire designed by Beiter and colleagues to examine nurses’ knowledge and attitudes …

Demonstration: Development Of A Minimum Set Of Parish Nurse Educational Outcomes And Behavioral Objectives, Deborah Ziebarth
International Journal of Faith Community Nursing
A Wisconsin parish nurse educator asked the question, “...who has the authority to say what is parish nursing in the state of Wisconsin and what are the key elements of a parish nurse training curriculum?” This work represents a six year effort to answer that question. This project answers the question by examining the essential core elements of parish nursing (now referred to as faith community nursing) training curriculums taught in the state of Wisconsin. Ultimately the project provided a minimum set of standardized education outcomes and behavioral objectives for training courses throughout the state. The work began with a …

Alzheimer ’s disease (AD) strips individuals of memories and abilities that have defined them as productive adults throughout their life. While the decline in memory is real and results in a ‘loss of self’ this does not equate to a ‘loss of soul.’ AD patients continue to have spiritual needs throughout their life as do the family, and/or caregivers. This article explores the spiritual needs and care of AD patients and families and the unique opportunity faith community nurses have to help the AD patient and their support system. The Reisberg Functional Assessment Staging System is used to explain the …

Validation Of Accelerometer Thresholds And Inclinometry For Measurement Of Sedentary Behavior In Young Adult University Students, Neil E. Peterson, John R. Sirard, Pamela A. Kulbok, Mark D. Deboer, Jeanne M. Erickson
Faculty Publications
Sedentary behavior (SB) is a major contributing factor to obesity and significant morbidity and mortality in adolescence and into adulthood, yet measuring SB is difficult. The purpose of this study was to assess the degree of construct validity of the ActiGraph GT3X+ inclinometer function and accelerometry metrics in objectively measuring SB and physical activity in young adult university students while performing semi-structured activities: lying, sitting, reading, playing seated video gaming, video watching, seated conversation, standing, stationary biking, and walking. These nine activities were objectively assessed using inclinometry and four output metrics from the ActiGraph based on the axis used to …

Improving Computerized Provider Order Entry Usage In A Community Hospital, Tammie Ann Williams
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects
The healthcare industry is now faced with the balance between instituting computerized technology and providing safe, high quality, efficient, and lower cost patient care. An important aspect of computer technology is the direct entry of orders electronically by providers into the electronic health record, termed computerized provider order entry (CPOE). This translational research project begins by defining CPOE and discussing CPOE’s effect on patient safety and quality of care by reducing preventable medical errors and adverse drug events and CPOE’s effect on healthcare costs. Regulatory requirements pertaining to CPOE are discussed; providers are expected to be proficient in CPOE in …

Assessing The Effects Of An Std Educational Intervention On Greek Society College Students’ Knowledge And Attitudes Toward Safe Sex Behaviors, Jennifer W. Goldsberry
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects
This study measured the effectiveness of an evidence-based educational intervention targeting STD prevention in Greek society members attending college and examined relationships between sexual health knowledge, attitudes toward safe sex behaviors, and sexual demographics. One hundred thirty-two Greek society members attending college participated. Instruments measured demographic characteristics, knowledge regarding sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and attitudes toward practicing safe sex behaviors at baseline and one week post-intervention. There was a significant increase in STD knowledge from baseline (M=13.03, SD=6.5) to one week (M=20.27, SD=4.9) t (131) = -13.53, p = .000. Fraternity members were more …

Background: Maternal health care provision remains a major challenge in developing countries. There is agreement that the provision of quality clinical services is essential if high rates of maternal death are to be reduced. However, despite efforts to improve access to these services, a high number of women in Tanzania do not access them. The aim of this study is to explore women’s views about the maternal health services (pregnancy, delivery, and postpartum period) that they received at health facilities in order to identify gaps in service provision that may lead to low-quality maternal care and increased risks associated with …

Promoting Resilience For Hiv Prevention In Female Sex Workers In Hong Kong: A Randomised Controlled Trial, Winnie W-Y Yuen, William C-W Wong, Catherine S-K Tang, Eleanor Holroyd, Agnes F-Y Tiwari, Daniel Y-T Fong, Weng Y. Chin
School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa
Background: Female sex workers are considered a reservoir of HIV and their psychological health has a role to play in HIV infections. In China, commercial sex workers were reported to account for nearly 50% of heterosexual transmission of HIV. Therefore, HIV prevention targeted at mental health could be an innovative strategy in controlling the infection. We aimed to provide an evidence-based resilience-promoting intervention targeting mental health and ultimately safe sexual practices of female sex workers.
Methods: This randomised controlled trial was done at three Hong Kong non-governmental organisations, namely Action for REACH OUT, JJJ Association, and the Society of …

Protecting Ourselves From Harm: Voices Of Aging Farmers, Deborah B. Reed, Deborah T. Claunch
Nursing Faculty Publications
Senior farmers suffer the highest fatality risk of any age group in agriculture. The purpose of this exploratory study was to develop a "voice" for senior farmers by examining aging farmers' and their families' perspectives of farm work, associated injury risks, and methods to decrease those risks. Focus groups and personal interviews were used to collect data from 81 participants across seven U.S. states. The findings reflect the collective and verified voice of the study group. The Health Belief Model was applied and revealed differences between farmers and their family members; however, the need and desire to continue self-directed work …
