This paper analyzes the current state of progress toward cultural competency in the medical workplace, specifically in the hospital setting. It compares the current writing on the topic to research done at a large New England children’s hospital. The nurses are all individuals who work in an out patient setting so they often see the same patients regularly for longer periods of time. This differs from the in-patient or floor nurses who only spend limited time with a constantly changing population of patients. Nurse educators must foster development of clinical judgment in students to help them provide the best care for the increasing population of older adult patients. This article reports qualitative findings from a mixed-methods study that focused on clinical judgment in the simulated perioperative care of an older adult. The sample was composed of treatment and control groups of prelicensure students (N = 275) at five sites. The treatment group watched a video of an expert nurse role model caring for a patient similar to the simulation patient, whereas the control group did not watch the video. Objective: To identify students' perceptions about the practices of provision and utilization of written feedback in the nursing degree programmes in Karachi.

Study Design: Cross-sectional descriptive study.

Place and Duration of Study: Nine Nursing Institutions in Karachi, Pakistan were selected for the study, from February to October 2011.

Methodology: The sample consisted of 379 second year nursing students from nine institutions in Karachi. The data was collected through a modified Assessment Experience Questionnaire (AEQ) developed by Gibbs and Simpson. The data obtained through AEQ was analyzed in the SPPS.

The Minnesota Hospital Association released a safety alert indicating there has been a significant increase in the number of reported patient fall events. Each year, falls and fall-related injuries account for an astounding number of unnecessary healthcare costs. Not only are falls costly, but many sadly result in major disabilities or deaths. Background: The trend of unplanned extubations is rising. Unplanned extubations are a safety concern for patients. A ventilator bundle is in place to guide nurses and respiratory therapists for weaning and extubating patients who meet criteria; it is not always being used. This study determined the efficacy of cleaning products on mobile phones. Previous research has demonstrated the risk for bacterial cross contamination between healthcare workers' hands, close contact equipment, and mobile communication devices. There is extensive literature on survival of organisms on inanimate objects. Mobile communication devices can act as a reservoir for bacteria associated with nosocomial infection. Additional studies show cross contamination between the healthcare workers hands, the mobile phones, and the patient.

The change from paper charting systems to electronic medical records (EMR) is a daunting task. Many hospitals today are undergoing this process. Kotter’s Change Model informs us that the process must be guided by sound principles and lead by an engaged, focused team of dedicated employees. The studied hospital is a small hospital in rural Ohio that initiated this change in late 2012. Their computer charting initiative launched the EPIC program for EMR use throughout the facility.
