Nln/Jeffries Simulation Framework: State Of The Science Summary, Patricia K. Ravert, Julie Mcafoees

In summer 2011, a research task force from the International Association of Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL), in consultation with Dr. Pamela Jeffries, invited international nursing researchers and educators to participate in a project to evaluate state-of-the-science and existing research regarding the simulation model/framework (Jeffries, 2005, Jeffries, 2007). The model/framework was developed to define simulation education variables and provide an organized guide. The 21 researchers and educators worked on one of five teams, one for each of the five existing major model/framework constructs (Teacher, Student, Educational Practices, Outcomes, and Simulation Design Characteristics).

The problem of Latino childhood obesity is well known, and experts agree that the sooner it is addressed in a child’s life, the better. Strong evidence from nationwide studies suggests that obesity begins in infancy for Mexican Americans. National data demonstrate the dramatic increase in weight-for-recumbent length above the 95th percentile (using the NCHS growth chart) among Mexican American children between National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) and the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES III) (Ogden et al., 2006). Workplace bullying (WPB) is a social and organizational problem. Within the health care arena, employees, particularly registered nurses, are at risk. WPB has several adverse effects and has been cited in the literature as closely associated with burnout and nurses leaving their positions. This quantitative study examined workplace bullying among practicing registered and its relationship with burnout and nurses’ intent to leave their current position.

The surveys utilized were the Negative Acts Questionnaires-Revised (NAQ-R), Maslach Burnout Inventory Survey, Intention to Turnover Scale and a demographic survey. Of the surveys distributed, a total of 185 were returned from one selected hospital …

A thorough family assessment provides a foundation for the nursing process when working with families. Therefore, nurses, along with other health care providers must develop expertise in conducting family assessments to provide the best possible care within the community. This article describes an innovative educational strategy using movies to teach family assessment skills and puts forth recommendations for future research to provide evidence to support this teaching modality.

Trauma and stress have been commonly studied with the occurrence of anxiety disorders. However, less research has been conducted on the relationship between the experience of loss, the centrality of the loss to a person’s identity and the experience and severity of symptoms of depression and anxiety. Current research has examined the relationship between a significant stressful event and symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Symptoms of anxiety and depression are experienced by people during various points in their life, although higher levels of these disorders may be exhibited after having experienced a loss or stressful life event.

Transradial coronary interventions appear to be increasing in all cardiac catheterization laboratories across the country. The benefits of this approach have become apparent with fewer bleeding complications, faster recovery time and most of all, improved patient satisfaction. These benefits indirectly increase patient throughput and decrease costs due to more efficient resource utilization. With increased financial constraints transradial coronary procedures are also a benefit in cost reductions.

Theresa “Tootsie” Smoder, better known as my grandma, always seemed larger than life. She bore eight children in nine years (The “Crazy Eights”), raised them almost single-handedly when her husband died and managed a 160 acre farm. Doing whatever it took to create security and stability for her family, Tootsie worked multiple jobs to feed her brood. She was a social butterfly who always tended to others and modeled the value of caring throughout her life.

Comparison Of Manual Versus Automated Data Collection Method For An Evidence-Based Nursing Practice Study, Matthew D. Byrne, T R. Jordan, Tamara Welle

OBJECTIVE:

The objective of this study was to investigate and improve the use of automated data collection procedures for nursing research and quality assurance.

METHODS:

A descriptive, correlational study analyzed 44 orthopedic surgical patients who were part of an evidence-based practice (EBP) project examining post-operative oxygen therapy at a Midwestern hospital. The automation work attempted to replicate a manually-collected data set from the EBP project.

RESULTS:

Automation was successful in replicating data collection for study data elements that were available in the clinical data repository. The automation procedures identified 32 "false negative" patients who met the inclusion criteria described in …
