A thorough family assessment provides a foundation for the nursing process when working with families. Therefore, nurses, along with other health care providers must develop expertise in conducting family assessments to provide the best possible care within the community. This article describes an innovative educational strategy using movies to teach family assessment skills and puts forth recommendations for future research to provide evidence to support this teaching modality.

Perceptions Of Workplace Bullying Among Practicing Registered Nurses, Crystal Regina Threadgill

Workplace bullying (WPB) is a social and organizational problem. Within the health care arena, employees, particularly registered nurses, are at risk. WPB has several adverse effects and has been cited in the literature as closely associated with burnout and nurses leaving their positions. This quantitative study examined workplace bullying among practicing registered and its relationship with burnout and nurses’ intent to leave their current position.

The surveys utilized were the Negative Acts Questionnaires-Revised (NAQ-R), Maslach Burnout Inventory Survey, Intention to Turnover Scale and a demographic survey. Of the surveys distributed, a total of 185 were returned from one selected hospital …

The following proposal outlines the planning, implementation, and follow-up regarding an organized health fair that aims to promote healthy lifestyle in a minority population. The health fair will be conducted on October 9' 2012 at Climax Scott's Alternative High School. The populations addressed through this project include: 60 students ranging from 16-19 years of age, 30 individuals 19 years or older and 10 teachers. The health fair will be organized by three senior-level Bronson School of Nursing students: Alexandra Scheidt, Abby Smith, and Kaelyn Momoe. Physical inactivity is a major issue for college-aged students. The purpose of this study is to explore the use of text messages as an intervention to increase physical activity in students who attend classes at the College of Health and Human Services. Transradial coronary interventions appear to be increasing in all cardiac catheterization laboratories across the country. The benefits of this approach have become apparent with fewer bleeding complications, faster recovery time and most of all, improved patient satisfaction. These benefits indirectly increase patient throughput and decrease costs due to more efficient resource utilization. With increased financial constraints transradial coronary procedures are also a benefit in cost reductions.

Theresa “Tootsie” Smoder, better known as my grandma, always seemed larger than life. She bore eight children in nine years (The “Crazy Eights”), raised them almost single-handedly when her husband died and managed a 160 acre farm. Doing whatever it took to create security and stability for her family, Tootsie worked multiple jobs to feed her brood. She was a social butterfly who always tended to others and modeled the value of caring throughout her life.

Comparison Of Manual Versus Automated Data Collection Method For An Evidence-Based Nursing Practice Study, Matthew D. Byrne, T R. Jordan, Tamara Welle

OBJECTIVE:

The objective of this study was to investigate and improve the use of automated data collection procedures for nursing research and quality assurance.

METHODS:

A descriptive, correlational study analyzed 44 orthopedic surgical patients who were part of an evidence-based practice (EBP) project examining post-operative oxygen therapy at a Midwestern hospital. The automation work attempted to replicate a manually-collected data set from the EBP project.

RESULTS:

Automation was successful in replicating data collection for study data elements that were available in the clinical data repository. The automation procedures identified 32 "false negative" patients who met the inclusion criteria described in …
