Second-Year Associate Degree Nursing (Adn) Self-Efficacy In Relation To Simulation Lab Experiences, Sarah W. Tate 2012 Gardner-Webb University

Second-Year Associate Degree Nursing (Adn) Self-Efficacy In Relation To Simulation Lab Experiences, Sarah W. Tate

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

Second-Year Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) Self-Efficacy in Relation to Simulation Lab Experiences utilized a convenience sample of second-year associate degree nursing students to conduct a survey of their perceptions of an increase in self-efficacy or self confidence in relation to their simulation lab experiences. Albert Bandura's theory of self-efficacy was the theoretical framework for the study. Students who have high levels of self-efficacy have been shown to handle obstacles with less stress, perseverance, and success. In this study, 85% of the students agreed that simulation lab experiences were beneficial in increasing their confidence to perform safely in their preceptorship and …

The Health Impacts Of Nursing Shift Work, Amanda Maria Cason Shandor 2012 Minnesota State University - Mankato

The Health Impacts Of Nursing Shift Work, Amanda Maria Cason Shandor

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This descriptive pilot study was intended to evaluate negative outcomes of shift work stress in nursing. Objective analysis of waist-hip-circumference ratios (WHR) and subjective survey reports were utilized to assess whether differences existed in expressed stress, stress related health disorders, and stress associated behaviors among day shift, night shift, and rotating shift registered nurses (RNs). Statistical analysis of the WHRs indicates that no statistical difference exists in the results from this study across the three nursing shifts. Nonetheless, survey reports do suggest that variance exists between nursing shifts. For example, stress related health problems appear to be most prevalent with …

Re-Envisioning Nurse Faculty Mentoring: Developmental Network Connections That Count, Margaret Babb Kennedy 2012 Medical University of South Carolina

Re-Envisioning Nurse Faculty Mentoring: Developmental Network Connections That Count, Margaret Babb Kennedy

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Fears surrounding the nurse faculty shortage in the United States have prompted significant emphasis on supporting novice educators and those in transition to new roles within academia through mentoring. Yet a continued focus on traditionally held notions of a hierarchical dyad limits possibilities for facilitating rich, diverse, mentoring relationships. A novel theoretical framework incorporating social network perspective is used to conceptualize the dynamic, multilevel reality of mentoring in examination of nurse faculty mentoring. This dissertation presents the results of an integrative review and qualitative study that explore evidence and experiences of nurse faculty mentoring using the unique developmental network lens, …

Bridging The Gap Between Student And Real World. Student Perspectives On Nursing Externships, Janice Hawkins, Lauren O'Connor, Rachelle Ann Santo Domingo

Ellmer School of Nursing Faculty Publications

[First paragraph] As senior nursing students in the 2011-2012 academic year, we recognized how difficult it is for students to transition from the classroom to the "real world" of nursing practice. Through the nursing curriculum, we have become extremely knowledgeable about numerous diseases and nursing care for different patient populations. However, with limited hands-on clinical experience, how are student nurses able to comprehend all of the diseases, disorders, and conditions studied in the classroom? Making connections between what is learned in theory and what is applied in nursing practice can only be achieved through experience.

Outcome Comparison Of An Evidence-Based Nurse Residency Program To Other Orientation Models, Debra A. Harrison

UNF Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this evidence-based project was to compare one-year outcomes for newly licensed Registered Nurses (NLRNs) in three organizations within the same healthcare system. All three have lower than nationally reported turnover and strategies for NLRN retention. Only one is using a Nurse Residency Program (NRP).

NRPs are recognized as an effective strategy to retain newly licensed registered nurses (NLRNs) in their first year of employment (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2010; The Advisory Board, 2007; Spector, 2007). The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) (2008) defines an NRP as a series of learning sessions and work experiences that occur …

The Relationship Between Staff Nurse Perception Of Nurse Manager Leadership Behavior And Staff Nurse Job Satisfaction In A Hospital Applying For Magnet Recognition Status, Lorraine B. Bormann

Nursing Faculty Publications

Hospitals are challenged to understand factors related to staff nurse retention in the context of the nursing shortage slowdown (Huselid, 1995; Mancino, 2008; Mancino, 2009). Leadership is a major factor in organizational success (Gandossy & Guarnieri, 2008; Gettler, 2003; Wooten & Crane, 2003) and nurse managers are the direct link between the executive nurse leaders and the registered nurses (RN) in the staff position (Taunton, Boyle, Woods, Hansen, & Bott, 1997).

Studies show that nurse manager leader behaviors influence staff nurse job satisfaction (Blegen, 1993; Irvine & Evans, 1995; Lashinger & Finegan, 2005). A primary role of the nurse leader …

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The United States is currently experiencing a nursing shortage. To compound the problem, hospital nurses are leaving their organizations and executives are scrambling to figure out the reasons behind the increased turnover. Many factors are associated with nurses' intention to leave their current employment. Among these factors are job satisfaction, organizational commitment, work satisfaction, work setting, control over practice, salary, nurse-physician collaboration, job stress, and leadership style. Effective nursing leadership is an integral factor in the retention of hospital nurses and nurses who perceive their nursing leadership as participative and transformational may be more likely to be satisfied with their …

Description of successful QSEN competency integration in Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs is limited. Although the ultimate goal is executing DNP programs where quality and safety is thoroughly integrated …
