Attitudes Towards An Evidence-Based Clinical Decision Support Tool To Reduce Exposure To Ionizing Radiation, Raymond Zakhari 2015 Liberty University

Attitudes Towards An Evidence-Based Clinical Decision Support Tool To Reduce Exposure To Ionizing Radiation, Raymond Zakhari

Faculty Publications and Presentations

Patients who suffer minor brain injuries experience unnecessary ionizing radiation in the form of a non-contrast head CT scan despite the dearth of evidence supporting standard CT scans for all brain injuries. Exposure to ionizing radiation increases the incidence of certain types of cancer. This evidence-based practice change project assesses the attitude of clinicians towards evidence-based clinical decision support tools, specifically the Canadian CT head rule. The use of highly sensitive clinical decision support tools is supported in the literature to help healthcare providers mitigate the risk associated with unnecessary use of CT scan imaging studies. The project was conducted …

Do You Understand What I Mean? How Cognitive Interviewing Can Strengthen Valid, Reliable Study Instruments And Dissemination Products, Anne Hofmeyer, Brenda H. Sheingold, Ruth Taylor

Nursing Faculty Publications

It is now well accepted that working in research teams that span universities, jurisdictions and countries can be rewarding and economically prudent. To this end, investigators collaborate in the pursuit of knowledge to address human and societal problems and translate results into local and global contexts. This implies that investigators need to develop study instruments that are fit for purpose and strategically manage issues arising from geographical, linguistic and cultural diversity. A proven method is cognitive interviewing to pre-test the study materials to ensure clarity and relevance in the study population. This paper describes the steps taken to increase the …

The Nurse Manager's Leadership And Nurse Satisfaction, Deborah Bryant 2015 Eastern Kentucky University

The Nurse Manager's Leadership And Nurse Satisfaction, Deborah Bryant

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Nurse managers face many challenges in today's healthcare environment including how to retain staff. The purpose of this capstone was to give tools to nurse managers on specific units to develop techniques for shaping a positive culture making a difference for the nursing staff, patients, families and others on the nursing units. Culture-shaping tools were taught to five nurse managers after completion of a pre-assessment survey by bedside nurses to determine if the behaviors of the nurse managers could impact the nurse satisfaction and improve retention. Nursing staff were queried for effectiveness in nurse satisfaction after the nurse managers had …

Perceived Patient Satisfaction With Hospital Services And Interventions, Marietta Abernathy 2015 Gardner-Webb University

Perceived Patient Satisfaction With Hospital Services And Interventions, Marietta Abernathy

Nursing Theses and Capstone Projects

The patient and family voice should be heard in the healthcare setting. Gaining knowledge and insight from a parent of a pediatric patient will allow hospital staff and administrators to see the hospital experience from the vantage point of a patient and family member (Uhl, Fisher, Docherty, & Brandon, 2013). It is important to continually review feedback and suggestions from families of pediatric patients to improve the care of future patients. Ultimately, this will improve patient satisfaction scores, but most importantly, it will improve the experience of pediatric patients (Creating patient and family advisory councils, 2010). The investigator interviewed ten …

The Noncompete Clause And The Nurse Anethetist: An Assessment Of Knowledge, Perception, And Experience, Briana K. Meseroll, Nathaniel M. Apatov, Carolyn M. Rutledge 2015 Old Dominion University

The Noncompete Clause And The Nurse Anethetist: An Assessment Of Knowledge, Perception, And Experience, Briana K. Meseroll, Nathaniel M. Apatov, Carolyn M. Rutledge

Ellmer School of Nursing Faculty Publications

Economic pressures and the challenge to maintain competitive advantage have resulted in many health-care entities requiring their practitioners to contractually enter into noncompete clauses (NCCs). Many student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) and Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs) are unaware of NCCs in employee contracts.

An anonymous, web-based questionnaire regard-ing NCCs was distributed to SRNAs and CRNAs nation-wide. Of 242 practicing CRNAs who responded, 147 (60.7%) were employed without a noncompete clause and 22 (9.1%) were unaware whether they had such a provision in their employment contracts. The knowledge level of the nurse anesthetist respondents was low (average score of 55.3%). …

Improving Depression Care For Older Home Health Patients, Sarah R. Schirmer 2015 University of Kentucky

Improving Depression Care For Older Home Health Patients, Sarah R. Schirmer

DNP Projects

Rates of depression in older home healthcare (HH) patients are highly prevalent. Although depression in this population is associated with increased rates of re-hospitalization, falls, and suicides, it is frequently under diagnosed and under treated. This Capstone Report examined this problem through three interrelated manuscripts. The first manuscript explored the problem through a review of the literature. This review determined that while there are many barriers to adequate depression care, programs that train clinicians to screen for depression and connect patients to depression care encourage adequate evaluation and treatment and can result in clinically significant changes in depression scores. This …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Crucial Conversations® Training On Nurses’ Self-Efficacy, Deeanna R. Mccallie

DNP Projects

Background: The history of nurse/physician communication is well documented. Although there is no universal definition of nurse-physician communication, an increasing body of evidence identifies this factor as an important component of organizing and delivering safe, quality care to patients. Communication has been identified as the root cause in 65% of sentinel events and noted as having significant effect on patient outcomes; contributing significantly to increasing care coordination, decreasing length of stay, and decreasing mortality rates. Purpose: To examine whether Crucial Conversations® training improves nurses’ self-efficacy scores and assess whether clinical nurse report improved ability to communicate with physicians. Methods: A …

Relational Coordination: An Exploration Of Nursing Units, An Emergency Department And In-Patient Transfers, Mary Coffey 2015 Virginia Commonwealth University

Relational Coordination: An Exploration Of Nursing Units, An Emergency Department And In-Patient Transfers, Mary Coffey

Theses and Dissertations

Emergency department (ED) crowding is a patient safety concern that has been increasing for more than a decade. Increased visits have resulted in ED crowding, longer wait times, ambulance diversions, and boarding of admitted patients (Hing & Bhuiya, 2012). Numerous factors affect ED crowding. Once various extraneous issues are resolved and a bed is available for a patient, it becomes the responsibility of nurses across unit boundaries to coordinate the patient transfer. This study applies Relational Coordination Theory (RCT) as a framework to provide nurses insight into the relational aspects of their work in the transfer of ED patients to …

Evidence Based Falls Management Program In The Nursing Home, Deloris Jacobs

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

The cost of fall injuries for both nursing homes and patients can be staggering. Facilities can incur large financial penalties following notices of severe deficiencies from regulatory agencies and will incur substantial legal fees in the event of a wrongful injury or death lawsuit. Patients injured in falls are at risk of increased financial costs for care in the nursing home as well as a lower quality of life. They are likely to incur co-pay or coinsurance costs for care by physicians and other professional services, and costs for rehabilitative services, out of pocket expenses, medical equipment, prescription drugs, and …
