Master's Projects and Capstones

Healthcare workers have been working in unprecedented circumstances since the declaration of the COVID-19 pandemic. Caregivers have been taxed with burnout. A large healthcare organization’s 26-bed, medical-surgical, telemetry, COVID-19 overflow unit was significantly impacted. Many healthcare organizations have adopted advocacy for attaining joy in work as an extra dimension of the Institute for Health Improvement’s Triple Aim. Adding this fourth aim supports averting caregiver burnout (CBO) while promoting joy in work.

This quality improvement project examined nurse leaders’ interventions that address CBO, promote healthy work environments, and promote joy in work. From June through August 2021, an 8-week resilience program …

Nursing Management To Reduce Hospital Readmissions After Percutaneous Coronary Interventions- Integrative Review, Jeena S. Daniel, Doreen Wagner 2021 Kennesaw State University

Nursing Management To Reduce Hospital Readmissions After Percutaneous Coronary Interventions- Integrative Review, Jeena S. Daniel, Doreen Wagner

Master of Science in Nursing Final Projects

Abstract

Percutaneous coronary interventions (PCIs) are considered life-saving techniques in the event of myocardial infarction and remain the standard of care for managing acute heart attack. Given the success of the procedures, decreased complications, and the economic advantage over open-heart surgery, coronary interventions continue to be the preferred treatment choice. However, amidst the growth and success of these procedures, readmissions after percutaneous coronary interventions have been identified and still prevail among hospitals. Hence, the goal was to conduct an integrative review to identify and synthesize literature on the interventions that help reduce readmissions after percutaneous coronary interventions and illuminate nurses' …

Identifying And Evaluating Pain Management In Hospitalized Older Adults With Hip Fractures: An Integrative Review, Monique Guinocor

Master of Science in Nursing Final Projects

Hip fractures are known to have the highest health morbidity and mortality, especially in the aging population. Having a hip fracture comes with insurmountable pain. Older adults experiences pain differently from other populations due to physiological changes, but this population experiences an undertreatment and mistreatment for pain, resulting in negative outcomes. Current methods for pain control include pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions. Exploring different interventions for pain management is necessary so providers can implement methods that are effective in pain relief without inducing complications. The aim of this integrative review is to identify current pain management interventions and determine their effectiveness …

A Performance Improvement Project To Improve Hand-Off Communication Documentation Within The Surgical Services Department, Bobbie J. Wich, Millie Escalona, Judy E. Bowling, Ana L. Santos

Nursing & Health Sciences Research Journal

Over 80% of adverse events in healthcare are due to miscommunication. To improve patient safety, The Joint Commission recommended the use of standardized hand-off communication tools in 2012. One acute care hospital in Southeast Florida implemented standardized handoff reports in 2014 with few revisions since that time. The COVID-19 pandemic brought to light additional critical information was needed to keep patients and staff safe, such as laboratory results indicating the need for isolation precautions. The nurses within the surgical services noticed this critical information was not sufficiently included in the handoff report. The lack of this information led to unnecessary …

Bedside Shift Reporting: A Benchmark Project, Clydea C. Hale

MSN Capstone Projects

Patient care is forever changing to improve satisfaction, safety, and overall treatment. Over the past few years, patients and their families are more invested in their overall care in the hospital and expect to be informed every step of the way. A common complaint from patients or their families is that one nurse or staff did not know the individuals care or treatment plan, there were no shift goals to work toward discharge, and the nurse did not update the patient/family with changes in care. All of these complaints along with the patient satisfaction scores and communication between the treatment …

The Psychosocial Experiences Of African American Sexual And Gender Minority Caregivers Of People With Dementia, LaKeva Harris 2021 University of Tennessee, Knoxville

The Psychosocial Experiences Of African American Sexual And Gender Minority Caregivers Of People With Dementia, Lakeva Harris

Doctoral Dissertations

Over 50 million people in the United States provide unpaid care to a family member or friend. One-third of these caregivers (16 million) provide care to someone with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). Of these caregivers, more than 20% state caregiving has led to a decline in their health. African American caregivers are less likely to report being in very good or better health than their white caregiving peers. Similarly, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer (LGBTQ) caregivers are more likely to report fair or poor health than their heterosexual, cisgender peers. The overlap of these minoritized identities may …

The Effects Of Social Determinants On Renal Care Among Eskd Patients In The Philippines: Rural Vs. Urban Areas, Melanie Rojas 2021 Dominican University of California

The Effects Of Social Determinants On Renal Care Among Eskd Patients In The Philippines: Rural Vs. Urban Areas, Melanie Rojas

Nursing | Senior Theses

From a Public Health Nursing (PHN) perspective, populations who are diagnosed with chronic disease or illness are the most vulnerable to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) or end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The International Society of Nephrology (ISN) states that the mortality rate for ESKD amounts to roughly 7 million individuals worldwide. In examining causes of ESKD throughout both history and the lifespan, high mortality rates are attributed to the lack of access to life-sustaining therapies such as dialysis or transplantation. The lack of access to therapy or healthcare services has been an immense Public Health crisis in the last few decades. …

Examining A Fatigue Management Model That Identifies Risk Factors And Consequences Of Fatigue In Older Individuals, Maral Torossian 2021 University of Massachusetts Amherst

Examining A Fatigue Management Model That Identifies Risk Factors And Consequences Of Fatigue In Older Individuals, Maral Torossian

Doctoral Dissertations

Fatigue is experienced by 40-74% of older individuals living with a chronic disease. Despite advances in scientific knowledge around risk factors and consequences associated with fatigue, a comprehensive model that can serve as a guide for healthcare providers caring for older individuals with fatigue is lacking. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine a fatigue model based on the Theory of Unpleasant Symptoms (TUS). The model included psychological, physiological, and situational risk factors of fatigue, as well as fatigue outcomes, such as physical, social, and cognitive performances, perceived health, and quality of life (QOL). This was a secondary …

Retention Of Nursing Assistants In Assisted Living Using Stay Interviews: A Qualitative Case Study, Daphne H. Dominguez 2021 Southeastern University - Lakeland

Retention Of Nursing Assistants In Assisted Living Using Stay Interviews: A Qualitative Case Study, Daphne H. Dominguez

Doctor of Education (Ed.D)

The expectation of the impact of an aging population and the future availability of nursing staff is a significant challenge for senior living communities around the world. Lack of nursing staff retention has driven managers to hire quickly, denying residents living in long-term care communities the care they need. Exploratory, qualitative design, using case study research, was used for this study to learn what motivates resident care attendants (RCAs) to stay employed in assisted living communities of senior living. Richard Finnegan’s five stay interview questions were used to interview nine RCAs from various assisted living communities in Louisiana. The data …

Social Determinants Of Health Assessment For Skilled Nursing Patients, Heather Welch 2021 University of San Francisco

Social Determinants Of Health Assessment For Skilled Nursing Patients, Heather Welch

Master's Projects and Capstones

Section I: Abstract

Problem: Skilled nursing facility (SNF) patients are vulnerable, aging, and have complex medical histories. Readmissions from an SNF impact healthcare costs and hospital resources and indicate poorly coordinated transitions home. Patients discharging from SNFs are at risk for higher social determinants of health (SDOH) disparities, such as limited caregiver support, transportation, housing insecurity, and food access. These SDOH risks can significantly increase an SNF patient's risk for hospital readmissions. Assessing and addressing SNF patients' social needs to reduce 30-day post-SNF readmissions can improve health outcomes and positively impact healthcare costs and a patient's financial liabilities.

Context: Frailty, …
