Current trends and data analysis show that there is a shortage of primary care providers throughout the United States. Physician assistants (PAs) who are mid-level practitioners, nationally certified, and state licensed to practice medicine, play an important role in healthcare delivery; however, the percentage of PAs practicing in primary care has dramatically decreased in the past 15 years. An important question to consider is what drives the decision-making process of job choice for PAs? Approximately 50% of US nursing home residents have a diagnosis of dementia. Abilities Care Approach® was created by occupational therapists (OTs) to promote quality dementia care for residents in skilled nursing facilities (SNFs). Certified nursing assistants (CNAs) are often the primary caregiver for residents with dementia. To ensure carryover of ACA principles, ACE dementia training was targeted towards CNAs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate Abilities Care Experts®(ACE) training program which provides CNAs with an occupation-based dementia care approach by focusing on the importance of occupational engagement and knowledge of dementia stages. Pharmacy Practice and Science Faculty Publications

Objective. To develop a comprehensive instrument specific to student pharmacist-patient communication skills, and to determine face, content, construct, concurrent, and predictive validity and reliability of the instrument.

Methods. A multi-step approach was used to create and validate an instrument, including the use of external experts for face and content validity, students for construct validity, comparisons to other rubrics for concurrent validity, comparisons to other coursework for predictive validity, and extensive reliability and inter-rater reliability testing with trained faculty assessors.

Results. Patient-centered Communication Tools (PaCT) achieved face and content validity and performed well with multiple correlation tests with significant findings for …

The Palliative Players are screened and trained hospice volunteers who provide a low-cost, sustainable, role-playing resource for use teaching communication skills to healthcare workers who discuss serious illness with patients and their families. eLearning for Medical Educators (eLME) is under development as a mechanism to provide professional learning in medical education to anyone, anytime, anywhere. The project began in 2016 at the Office for Medical Educator Development within the UNM School of Medicine in order to support community faculty who host medical students and residents at their clinics. eLME was planned with numerous stakeholders using the Kirkpatrick Business Partnership Model. Two modules were delivered in early 2017 and include a combination of self-reflection, interactive multimedia, and assessment.

Morocco is in the midst of an epidemiologic transition ushered in by reduced fertility rates and extended life expectancy. Unlike two decades ago, today’s leading cause of death is chronic disease. In 2006, Moroccan officials launched Vision 2020, a comprehensive plan that seeks to expand access to healthcare and reign back the prevalence of noncommunicable disease, among other goals related to development. This presentation described the opening of a student-run pro bono pediatric therapy clinic that provides services to children/families who are economically disadvantaged. The benefits of participation for students and clients were reviewed, and fund-raising and the development of a mission statement were discussed.
