Background: Interprofessional Education (IPE) can improve teamwork among future healthcare professionals, but the academic structural environment can be a barrier to its implementation.

Methods and Results: Students from seven professional programs (athletic training. exercise science, nursing, nutrition, public health, social work, and speech-language pathology) participated in a two-part IPE program consisting of: a web-based education module and an in-person interactive workshop. Students were administered a deidentified pre/post survey to assess changes in their knowledge and attitudes toward IPE. The "ED Stories" project is a novel method for promoting individual wellness and interpersonal relationships on a virtual platform in an emergency medicine residency program. We engaged multiple individuals across all levels of medical training on a virtual platform to facilitate discussion regarding difficult situations, patient interactions, and tips on how to succeed in challenge circumstances in the future. The platform was outlined as a "safe space," free of judgment and criticism. We engaged 54 participants with a culmination of 131 interactions; there were 14 original posts with a total of 22 comments. We believe that this virtual platform allowed …

This publication details the lesson plan for the “Opportunities in STEM” club for the summer of 2019. This club began out of a desire to educate high school students about the opportunities and careers available in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields. Often, students feel that the prospect of entering a STEM field is daunting and out of their grasp. What it means to be a scientist is often unclear, and students never consider opportunities out of the fear of the unknown, particularly when science is associated with complexity and difficulty. Context: Despite equal enrollment proportions in MD and PhD programs, there are fewer women than men in MD-PhD programs and academic medicine. Factors important in degree program selection, including the perception of gender disparities, among undergraduate students were characterized.

Methods: In 2017, pre-health students at four public North Carolina universities were invited to participate in an online survey regarding career plans, decision factors, and perceptions of gender disparities in MD, PhD and MD-PhD pathways. The authors characterized factors important to program selection, and evaluated the association of intended graduate program with perceived gender disparities using Fisher’s exact tests.

Background High Fidelity Simulation (HFS) is used across multiple health professions. Despite the wide variety of clinical experiences that Student Registered Nurse Anesthetists (SRNA) possess prior to training, the induction sequence to a General Anesthetic (GA) is a daunting task. Although the efficacy of HFS has been widely studied within undergraduate nursing programs, there are no studies published determining the efficacy of HFS on SRNA training. The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of simulation training amongst entry-level SRNA’s and examine any individual participant factors that may influence clinical performance within HFS.

A definitive association between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and negative physical and mental health outcomes has been established. There is evidence that individuals in forensic psychiatric facilities are disproportionately exposed to ACEs, which may impact severity, prognosis, and age of onset of psychiatric symptoms, including behavioral concerns of institutional aggression, self-harm behaviors, and suicide attempts. Such psychiatric and behavioral concerns are often managed through multiple psychotropic prescriptions, leading to psychotropic polypharmacy. This study evaluated the relationship between ACEs, mental health and behavioral concerns, and psychotropic polypharmacy through analysis of archival data from a forensic inpatient psychiatric facility. Background Surgical patients expect anesthesia providers to provide high quality care. Blood pressure variability must be mitigated by establishing the patient’s blood pressure baseline and sustaining it through surgery. A consensus has not been established on which blood pressure measurement should be used as the patient’s baseline. Blood pressures before surgery in multiple care settings have been shown to vary. This may result in differences in drug and fluid administration, depending on the blood pressure considered baseline by the anesthesia provider.
