Background: Ineffective communication in healthcare has been tied to medical errors and provider stress (Chaharsoughi et al., 2014). Many nursing students struggle when communicating in the clinical setting because they lack confidence. When left unaddressed, this issue can follow students as they begin their nursing careers. Purpose: The study focused on measuring how confident undergraduate nursing students felt communicating with patients, visitors, nurses, and faculty in the clinical setting prior to and after instructor-led interventions. On March 17, 2020, the American Association of Medical Colleges issued a statement which “strongly supports medical schools pausing all student clinical rotations, effective immediately, until at least March 31.” The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine immediately withdrew third- and fourth-year students from clinical rotation sites, and developed alternative, online-based clerkship curricula to complete for the remainder of the academic year. Background: Vaccine education during residency is not standardized. Little is known about resident perspectives on vaccines and ideal vaccine training.

Methods: A convenience sample of pediatric and family medicine (FM) residents were surveyed using a de novo 22 question survey to understand perspectives on vaccines and current and preferred vaccine education curriculum. Responses were analyzed categorically and compared by resident year using Fisher’s Exact test.

Results: In October 2016, 126 residents from 9 pediatric and FM programs completed the survey. Resident respondents’ training levels varied. Most were 25-29 years old and female. High familiarity with vaccines and agreeing to defer …

BACKGROUND

Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the United States and can cause serious health problems like genital warts and cancer. However, vaccination can prevent some of these issues. Although the CDC recommends that individuals between 9-26 years old should receive the HPV vaccine, catch-up vaccination until 45 years old is available upon further guidance from healthcare providers.

Background Use of vacuum extraction (VE) has been declining in low and middle income countries. At the highest referral hospital Tanzania, 54% of deliveries are performed by caesarean section (CS) and only 0.8% by VE. Use of VE has the potential to reduce CS rates and improve maternal and neonatal outcomes but causes for its low use is not fully explored.

Presentation regarding the following research: To determine if self-assessed empathy can be increased through an end of life virtual reality (VR) experience, second year UNE COM medical students (N=174) completed the Clay Lab VR experience during January 2020. Student embodied Clay, 66 year old male veteran with incurable lung cancer. Experiences included a difficult end-of-life conversation; transition to home hospice care; and eventually death. Students were asked to complete a pre-test and post-test survey. The pre/post test surveys included eight Likert scale questions and two open-ended questions.
