Barriers To Healthy Births At Nigerian Hospitals, Caroline Johnston
Senior Theses
Maternal mortality is a problem everywhere, but it is especially dangerous in Nigeria where the average woman experiences pregnancy six times during her lifetime (Population Reference Bureau, 2001). Many researchers focus on the medical complications associated with labor, such as hemorrhage, eclampsia, or infection. Although these birth complications are the direct sources of maternal death, it is also important to recognize how maternal mortality is a multifaceted issue influenced by local cultural groups, religions, politics, poverty level and the absence of basic infrastructures. Although maternal mortality is interconnected with social and geographical elements, my paper concentrates on Nigerian hospitals and …

Predicting Usmle Step 2 Scores Using Results From The Nbme Shelf Exams, Jose Chavez, Michael Machiorlatti, Jose Campo Maldonado, Lori Berry
MEDI 9331 Scholarly Activities Clinical Years
Background
In February of 2020 the sponsors of the USMLE examinations, which includes the NBME and the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) decided to change the scoring system of the USMLE Step 1 from a three-digit numeric score to a Pass/Fail outcome1. The basis of this change was made to “address concerns about Step 1 scores impacting student well-being and medical education”2. Historically, the three-digit numeric score from Step 1 has been one of the top determining factors for admission into residency3. This change will cause a shift in the priority of objective …

Teaching About The Wild: A Survival Course As A Novel Resident Educational Experience., Geoffrey Comp, Rachel Munn, Renee Moffitt, Eric Cortez
Medical Education Articles
AUDIENCE: Emergency medicine residents.
INTRODUCTION: Wilderness medicine (WM) is the practice of resource-limited medicine under austere conditions. Emergency physicians in training should gain additional exposure to wilderness medicine knowledge and outdoor skills to allow for the development of problem solving and improvisation abilities. However, there is limited data on the instruction of general survival skills to residents interested in WM.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES: By the end of the session the learner will be able to: 1) differentiate at least three different methods for water purification 2) describe how to erect a temporary survival shelter 3) construct a survival pack for personal …

Development And Implementation Of Computer-Based Learning Modules On Alternative Communication For Pediatric Nurses And Nursing Students, Amanda Kaye Simmons
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Purpose and Rationale. To develop, implement, and assess computer-based learning modules (CBLs) on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) with pediatric nurses and nursing students for knowledge outcomes, self-efficacy, and perceived relevance and effectiveness. Effective communication ensures all parties can understand and express themselves clearly, through any means necessary, often including AAC tools, supports, and strategies. Communication is essential in healthcare but there is limited research with pediatric nurses. Previous research with a single hospital indicated a need for nurse education on AAC. This research used focus groups and interviews to understand pediatric nurse and nursing student knowledge about AAC. The …
