Service-Learning In The Virtual Space: Mixed Method Analysis Of Steps Pipeline Program, Katherine Ceglio, Julianne Stout

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

North Central Indiana Area Health Education Center (NCI-AHEC) aims to develop the healthcare infrastructure by encouraging rural students to pursue healthcare professions. In light of rural healthcare shortages found in Indiana, they implemented a pipeline program, Successfully Training and Educating Pre-medical Students (STEPS). This program offers mentoring and educational assistance to pre-health-professional undergraduate students at Indiana University – Kokomo. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Purdue research team partnered with NCI-AHEC to conduct a completely virtual mixed method study that examined the initial impact of the STEPS program and made recommendations for improvement.

The opportunities for virtual collaboration created during the …

Pharmacy Students As Volunteer Medical Staff For American Diabetes Association Summer Camp, Emily Harvath 2021 Purdue University

Pharmacy Students As Volunteer Medical Staff For American Diabetes Association Summer Camp, Emily Harvath

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

For children living with a diagnosis of diabetes, com-munity support and education about proper disease management are critical for the mental and physical health of the child and their family. The experiences offered at summer camps hosted by the American Diabetes Association address both of these needs for the pediatric diabetes community. These camps provide children with the opportunity to participate in a traditional camp experience—swimming, rock climbing, tubing, and more—while giving parents peace of mind in the knowledge that their child’s diabetes will be closely monitored by a team of health care professionals. During my time as volunteer medical …

A Community Health Initiative: Health To The Power Of You, Stephanie Hendricks 2021 Purdue University

A Community Health Initiative: Health To The Power Of You, Stephanie Hendricks

Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement

In April 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic impacted the number of visits to ambulatory care practices and was reported to have declined by nearly 60%. The extent of this decline is alarming as outpatient visits help manage chronic diseases in patients, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. This trend sparked an interest in pharmacist and student pharmacist, Dr. Cynthia Koh-Knox Sharp and Stephanie Hendricks, respectively, as it offered an opportunity to help serve the Greater Lafayette community. We created Health to the Power of You (HealthYou), which targets two of Lafayette’s neglected populations: community members experiencing …

Libraries Advancing Social Justice And Improving The Health Care Of The Lgbtqai+ Communities, Kayo Denda, Daniel Delmonaco, Victoria Wagner 2021 Rutgers University - New Brunswick/Piscataway

Libraries Advancing Social Justice And Improving The Health Care Of The Lgbtqai+ Communities, Kayo Denda, Daniel Delmonaco, Victoria Wagner

New Librarianship Symposia Series: Fall 2021

LGBTQAI+ communities have faced discrimination in health care due to inadequate medical care, unfair health insurance policies and entrenched prejudice. To remedy this situation, many medical schools and hospitals have created co-curricular interventions, such as events and programs and new staff positions to address this issue. This librarian-led collaboration challenges and advances the discussion on comprehensive LGBTQAI+ health care and promotes deeper understanding of LGBTQAI+ communities by transforming health professionals’ cultural competency and compassionate health care practices towards equity and social justice.

This project – Babs Siperstein Humanities and Medicine Series - was born when the faculty affiliated with the …

Impact Of Covid 19 On Library Services In Us Pharmacy Programs, Sherrill Brown, Julie Kalabalik Hoganson, Ivan Portillo

Library Presentations, Posters, and Audiovisual Materials

"The COVID 19 pandemic resulted in many academic libraries closing physical spaces and the reduction of personnel due to quarantine measures. The potential reduction in library services could have a negative impact on research by pharmacy faculty"

Attributes And Characteristics Of The Physician-Physician Assistant Organizational Leader Relationship, Victoria S. Louwagie

Graduate Dissertations and Theses

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate and better understand the attributes and characteristics of the influential physician, the dual-roled physician assistant (PA)leader and how this relationship impacts the PA leader and the PA leader-physician relationship. These dual-role PA leaders may possess additional formal job titles and duties while also having direct reports.

Method: We surveyed PA leaders at a large academic medical center and its associated health system. The survey instrument evaluates perceptions, attitudes and characteristics of the PA leader, influential physician, and their relationship.

Results: There were 34/56 PA organizational leaders that responded to the survey …

Debriefing With Pearls & Watson’S Caritas, Heather A. Uccello 2021 Seton Hall University

Debriefing With Pearls & Watson’S Caritas, Heather A. Uccello

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

Debriefing, an important aspect of students’ clinical experience, is a reflective, critical thinking analysis and communication strategy that provides rapid feedback after either a simulated or genuine clinical event. To teach this higher-level critical thinking skill throughout the learning process, nursing programs require specific methodology and faculty expertise. The National League for Nursing supports nurse educators having a theory-based strategy, formal training, and ongoing competency evaluation. Informed by Jean Watson’s Theory and the Promoting Excellence and Reflective Learning in Simulation standardized debriefing tool methodology, this project outlines a framework that nursing schools can use to potentially improve the debriefing process …

Communication Skills Training: A Means To Promote Time-Efficient Patient-Centered Communication In Clinical Practice, Else Dalsgaard Iversen, Maiken Wolderslund, Poul-Erik Kofoed, Pål Gulbrandsen, Helle Poulsen, Søren Cold, Jette Ammentorp

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Purpose: We hypothesized that health care providers would behave in a more patient-centered manner after the implementation of communication skills training, without causing the consultation to last longer.

Methods: This study was part of the large-scale implementation of a communication skills training program called "Clear-Cut Communication With Patients" at Lillebaelt Hospital in Denmark. Audio recordings from real-life consultations were collected in a pre-post design, with health care providers' participation in communication skills training as the intervention. The training was based on the Calgary-Cambridge Guide, and audio recordings were rated using the Observation Scheme-12.

Results: Health care providers improved their communication …

A Novel Code Team Leader Card To Improve Leader Identification, Palak Shah, Vinod Havalad 2021 Presbyterian Hospital – The Children's Center at Presbyterian

A Novel Code Team Leader Card To Improve Leader Identification, Palak Shah, Vinod Havalad

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Prompt and clear code team leader identification is vital in effective cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and pediatric trainees often have limited experience in these scenarios. This project sought to develop a tangible object that provided clear leader identification and assisted in code team management and simulated team training. A Code Team Leader Card (CTLC) was designed to provide clear leader identification while simultaneously providing a cognitive aid via integration of pediatric advanced life support (PALS) algorithms. Additionally, CTLC served to occupy the leader’s hands to limit their ability to intervene on procedural tasks. The CTLC was incorporated into pediatric resident simulation …
