Desperately Seeking Feedback: A Phenomenographic Study Of Medical Students’ Experiences During A 4-Year Longitudinal Feedback Curriculum, Robert Bing-You, Victoria Hayes, Tamara Palka, Marybeth Ford, Robert Trowbridge
Journal of Maine Medical Center
Introduction: The focus of feedback in medical education recently shifted to a dialogic partnership between teachers and learners, co-creating effective feedback exchanges. We previously described a prototype, longitudinal 4-year curriculum for medical students to develop feedback-seeking behaviors. We explored the students’ experiences as participants in this novel program.
Methods: Beginning in academic year 2017-2018, we assessed the 4-year experiences of 14 medical students with a phenomenographic, qualitative approach. Three waves of semi-structured, individual interviews were conducted during the first 3 years. Focus groups were conducted in the final year of the program. Meaning units were identified, and categories were determined …

Using Crispr Gene Editing To Prevent Accumulation Of Lipids In Hepatocytes, Erin Young, Cem Kuscu, Christine Watkins, Murat Dogan
Longitudinal Scholar's Project
CRISPR gene editing is a molecular technology that can be used to silence gene expression. In this experiment, genes that are known to play a role in lipid accumulation in hepatocytes were targeted. Specifically, levels of fatty acid transport proteins 2 and 5 (FATP2 & 5) have been shown to be elevated in cases of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. The goal of this experiment was to reduce expression of these genes by using a dead Cas9 (dCas9) protein with an attached inhibitory domain (KRAB) that acts on the promotor region. When measuring the mRNA expression, it was determined that the …

Attitudes And Beliefs Of Physical Therapist And Physical Therapist Assistant Program Directors In The United States Towards Interprofessional Education, Lawrence Ramiscal, Christopher Truelove Jr., Vahe Heboyan, Gianluca De Leo
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Purpose: To investigate the attitudes and beliefs of physical therapy (PT) and physical therapist assistant (PTA) program directors towards interprofessional education (IPE). We hypothesized that Communication and Ethics would be the most important competencies among program directors. Methods: A cross-sectional survey based on previously utilized instruments modified for the profession of PT was sent to PT and PTA program directors. One hundred sixteen responses were analyzed using frequency analysis for demographic data and non-parametric Mann-Whitney U t-test for group differences. Results: While the majority of program directors agree that IPE is important, with Communication as the most important IPE competency, …

Background:
ST-segment changes to the fetal electrocardiogram (ECG) may indicate fetal acidosis. No large-scale characterization of ECG morphology immediately after birth has been performed, but ECG is used for heart rate (HR) assessment. We aimed to investigate ECG morphology immediately after birth in asphyxiated infants, using one-lead dry-electrode ECG developed for HR measurement.
Methods:
Observational study in Tanzania, between 2013–2018. Near-term and term infants that received bag-mask ventilation (BMV), and healthy controls, were monitored with one-lead dry-electrode ECG with a non-diagnostic bandwidth. ECGs were classified as normal, with ST-elevations or other ST-segment abnormalities including a biphasic ST-segment. We analyzed ECG …

On-Treatment Changes In Pediatric Parameningeal Rhabdomyosarcoma Treated With Upfront Proton Therapy, Jacob Allen Jordan
Longitudinal Scholar's Project
The project is focused on the effects of longitudinal changes in patient and tumor anatomy on the delivered treatment plan during proton radiotherapy for the treatment of pediatric Para meningeal rhabdomyosarcoma. The study will investigate the effects of change on dose delivered to organs-at-risk near the tumor. This effort will extend the analysis of changes to the organs-at-risk to all the cases in the study and add an additional case meeting the study criteria.

Graduate Medical Education (GME) Resident and Fellow Research Day Posters
Objectives
Firearms are the leading cause of death among children and adolescents. Despite evidence to support physician training in firearm safety counseling, formal curricula are limited in pediatric residency programs. We sought to develop and implement a resident-led, feasible, sustainable, and impactful firearm safety curriculum for pediatric residents.
Methods
A firearm safety curriculum was developed by pediatric residents using Kern’s curriculum development framework and delivered to their peers at a single academic center from 2019 - 2020. The three-part series included workshops on basic firearm safety counseling principles, case-based practice, and advocacy training and a gun lock program in collaboration …

Use Of Point-Of-Care Ultrasound For Lung Assessment: A Practice Change Educational Program For Advanced Practice Providers And Students, Mark W. Owen
DNP Research Projects
Abstract Background: With over 130 million emergency room (ER) visits per year in the United States, many emergency departments (ED) are struggling with overcrowded conditions. Contributing to overcrowded conditions are those presenting with dyspnea, who are nearly 4 million in number. ED crowding has serious implications. Exploring and implementing evidence-based methods to alleviate congestion is critical. Problem: One method being explored is the integration of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) into the stretcher side assessment of dyspneic patients. Multiple pathologies can cause dyspnea and rapidly isolating the underlying etiology is critical. Various studies have demonstrated the efficiency of POCUS at identifying lung …

The Lived Experience Of Simulation In Nursing Education Related To Postpartum Depression And Healthcare Disparities, Erin Tonkin
Honors Undergraduate Theses
Background: Postpartum mothers are often initially screened for postpartum depression (PPD) but lack adequate follow up visits after discharge from the hospital post-delivery, despite the variety of complications that can arise from it. Additionally, healthcare disparities (HCD) have been shown to limit access to and the quality of healthcare for minority patients. Simulation-based education offers learners an opportunity to practice screening for PPD with the goal of improving the quality of care for these patient subgroups in future practice. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the lived experience of SBE with prelicensure student nurses in an effort …
