Factors Leading To Reduced Unscheduled Pediatric Asthma Visits During Covid-19, Sean Stout 2022 Children's Mercy Hospital

Factors Leading To Reduced Unscheduled Pediatric Asthma Visits During Covid-19, Sean Stout

Research Days

Background: Emergency Department (ED) and inpatient (IP) asthma visits were reduced during 2020 at a tertiary pediatric hospital. This was likely due to measures used to avoid exposure to the SARS-CoV2 virus which led to fewer viral upper respiratory infections (URIs). Other known asthma triggers include allergens, air pollution, and weather changes.

Objectives/Goal: To determine whether other factors could explain this reduction, we looked for changes in other asthma triggers such as pollen, air pollution, and weather.

Methods/Design: Monthly ED and IP asthma visits from 2010 to 2019 were compared to 2020 by time series analysis (TSA), controlling for total …

When Are Inpatient And Emergency Dermatology Consultations Appropriate?, Hershel Dobkin, Timothy Blackwell, Robin Ashinoff 2022 Hackensack Meridian Health Palisades Medical Center

When Are Inpatient And Emergency Dermatology Consultations Appropriate?, Hershel Dobkin, Timothy Blackwell, Robin Ashinoff

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Hospitalists and emergency physicians continue to struggle with the assessment of dermatologic conditions, often consulting dermatology whenever a patient has a “rash” or skin concern. Dermatology is still not emphasized in medical education and often is taught to most medical students in an abbreviated fashion, which results in physicians feeling ill-equipped to deal with any dermatologic condition—either mundane or potentially life-threatening.

Better guidelines are needed for physicians in the ED and on inpatient units to guide them on appropriate use of dermatologic consultation outside the ambulatory office and the clinic. We constructed a consultation flowchart to help guide the triage …

Challenging The Stigma Of Sex Work: Creating The Framework To Train Student Doctors In Providing Affirming Care, Noelle De Marco, Trishauna Bennett, Oghenerukevwe Inweh, Ali Harb

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

The intention of this proposed intervention is to provide a foundation for medical students to include affirming care for sex workers in their future practice by understanding the complex institutional violence & discrimination experienced by this community. Additionally, dispelling misconceptions surrounding sex work is another of the foci of the service project. Future physicians can combat the stigma by providing patient care that centers sex worker agency, harm reduction, & judgement free strategies. Making the workshop guide open access allows other medical schools and special interests groups to incorporate a social justice framework into their medical practice.

Does Simulation-Based Education For Cardiac Auscultation Improve Competency And Retention Rate Compared With Traditional Education?, Harrison Patrizio, Riley Phyu, Bum Kim, Nils V. Brolis 2022 Rowan University

Does Simulation-Based Education For Cardiac Auscultation Improve Competency And Retention Rate Compared With Traditional Education?, Harrison Patrizio, Riley Phyu, Bum Kim, Nils V. Brolis

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Cardiac auscultation is a critical part of clinical examination. Stethoscope allows for early detection of numerous important cardiac pathologies and appropriate referral for further management. Improper use of stethoscopes leads to inappropriate referral resulting in unnecessary financial stress or a delay in proper treatment of time-sensitive pathologies like VSD in children. Multiple studies have documented that competency among medical professionals in cardiac auscultation skills is in steady decline and this is due to the ineffective teaching method of cardiac auscultation starting in medical school.

Objective: To investigate the effectiveness of simulated education in cardiac auscultation.

More than 1/3 of people nationwide (80+ million) have limited health literacy, which contributes to poor health outcomes and lifestyle choices. Health literacy is defined as the understanding and application of words, numbers & documents (i.e., medication labels, medical forms). The Rowan Community Health Center (RCHC), located in Lindenwold NJ, is a student-run clinic that wanted to assess the health literacy of our patients in order to further provide better care. RCHC provides cost-free primary care services regardless of income, insurance, or legal status. To assess health literacy, RCHC used the New Vital Signs (NVS) literacy assessment tool to investigate …

A Geographically Targeted Approach For A Preceptor Tax Incentive Using Primary Care Health Professional Shortage Areas (Hpsas), Julia Mattingly, Sarah Belcher, Samuel C. Kessler

Commonwealth Policy Papers

Years before the COVID-19 pandemic brought on a health care shortage in Kentucky, its rural areas were already struggling to obtain and attract primary care medical practitioners. Even though the number of medical school graduates in the U.S. has steadily increased throughout the years, there is a general disinterest in rural or small-town practice, and legislators throughout the country have pondered ways to address this issue plaguing communities. Versions of Preceptor Tax Incentive legislation in Kentucky have been proposed in the General Assembly to address care shortages in the state, however, all have been unsuccessful at truly targeting rural areas …

Inpatient Outcomes For Children Receiving Empiric Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Coverage For Complicated Pneumonia, Sophia Hackman

Research Days

Watch recording of live event

Background: Pediatric community acquired pneumonia is responsible for an estimated 124,000 hospitalizations annually in the United States, with up to 40% of hospitalized children subsequently developing a complicated pneumonia (i.e., effusion/empyema). Children with complicated pneumonia commonly require increased numbers of procedures, have exposure to broad-spectrum antibiotics, and have prolonged hospitalizations. While the prevalence of pneumonia has overall declined with childhood vaccination, the number of children with complicated pneumonia has remained stable. Current guidelines do not adequately address antibiotic management of pediatric complicated pneumonia specifically when to utilize methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) coverage, likely contributing to …
