Professional Development Of Medical Students Transitioning From Preclinical To Clinical Training , Bridget Croniger, Mikaela Grudzien, Rubab Imtiaz, Jennifer Mendez
Medical Student Research Symposium
Background:
Personal and professional development (PPD) is a competency domain for graduated U.S. medical students. Current research shows that PPD is lowest at transitional periods, such as the transition from preclinical to clinical training.
Methods:
To assess professional development at a large, allopathic medical school, a survey with seven statements regarding professional development was formed. The statements encompassed domains of mentorship, communication skills, professionalism, team work, and innovation and asked students to rank each statement from 1-5 (1 - highly deficient, 5 - highly proficient). The online, anonymous survey was emailed to all second year medical students at Wayne State …

Evaluating Implementation Of Recognition-Based Incentive Program (Rbip) During Service Learning Curriculum, Alexis Malecki, Mikaela Grudzien, Rachel Feldstein, Jeffrey Kline
Medical Student Research Symposium
Background
Common Threads (CT), a student organization, produces crocheted sleeping mats for people experiencing homelessness. Due to the extensive labor of the initiative, CT was motivated to encourage engagement of medical student volunteers beyond the curriculum-required minimum hours through a recognition-based incentive program (RBIP).
Methods
Students were presented with the opportunity by CT to receive the recognition title of “Community Change Partner”. In the Service Learning curriculum at WSUSOM, students are required to complete clinical and outreach service hours. CT offers students the opportunity to complete outreach hours by making sleeping mats out of recycled material. To receive the title, …

Medical Student Research Symposium
Background
Learning communities in medical schools create a bridge for senior students to engage with junior peers, providing advice and support as mentors. In this process, mentors are likely to gain skills in communication, empathy, and leadership - well received traits for residency.
Methods
We aim to elucidate an objective measure of mentor growth and development during the mentorship program. We will evaluate opinions on the program's ability to foster professional attributes including leadership, communication, and empathy; determining features that benefit them while assessing for paradigms of improvement. We will survey 24 M2-students through self-rated queries on a Likert scale. …

A Rare Case Of Deep Vein Thrombosis Secondary To Protein S Deficiency And Antithrombin Iii Deficiency With Mthfr (C677t) Heterozygous Mutation, And Crohn’S Disease, Anusha Garg, Vanama Lakshman Sai, Ankit Singh, Aditi Rao
Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine
Deep vein thrombosis is a condition wherein a thrombus develops in the deep veins of the body, most commonly in the legs, due to increasing tendency of the blood to coagulate. One such reason is the MTHFR gene mutation, wherein an increase in homocysteine levels causes irritation of the blood vessel endothelium, causing a disturbance in Virchow’s triad, hence triggering clot formation. [1]
The MTHFR gene is responsible for instructing the body to produce an enzyme called methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase(MTHFR) [2]. MTHFR gene mutations can lead to a wide range of disorders, either as a result of the elevated levels …

Digital Journal of Clinical Medicine
ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND
Multiple System Atrophy is a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease. Symptoms tend to appear in 50s and advance rapidly over the course of 5-10 years with progressive loss of motor and autonomic function.
Some of the common symptoms include frequent falls with or without tremors and b/l akinetic rigidity with involvement of the axial muscles. Postural tremor, severe stridor and cranio cervical dystonia may be seen. Alpha synnuclenopathies are generally characterized by REM behavioral disorders and severe dysautonomia years before the onset of the disease.
Individuals with MSA typically do not have sustained improvement in their symptoms with levodopa. …

OBJECTIVES: Black, indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) remain underrepresented in research occupations. This report discusses a collaboration to train undergraduate BIPOC students in clinical research between a public health institute, two medical schools, and a historically Black College or University (HBCU). This nine-month program trained BIPOC undergraduates in research methodology, psychology, and addiction science, and immersed trainees in real-world research. The program included didactic seminars, experiential activities, and a mentored research project culminating in a poster and oral presentation.
METHODS: Key learnings, program satisfaction survey results, and preliminary outcomes from the first three program cohorts (N = 6 students) …

Variable Shift Lengths Negatively Affect Emergency Medicine Resident Wellness, Marcus Fazzari, Joseph Longobardi, Joseph Mccarthy, Matthew Hysell, Sidney Hann
Journal of Wellness
Introduction: Burnout is very common in emergency medicine and there has been extensive research evaluating factors that contribute to burnout. We sought to examine the contributions of post-graduate year (PGY), shifts worked per month, patients seen per shift, and length of shifts to emergency medicine resident burnout.
Methods: All emergency medicine residents were surveyed with regards to their PGY, shifts worked per month, patients seen per shift, and length of shifts. They were administered the Stanford Wellness Survey and asked to globally rate their degree of burnout. We then modeled whether consideration of the surveyed factors increased the …
