Medical Education Articles
Introduction Safe and effective management of agitated patients poses multiple challenges for healthcare professionals. Patients placed in restraints because of agitated behavior are at a higher risk of complications, including death. This intervention was designed to provide emergency department staff a framework for de-escalation, improve teamwork, and reduce the use of violent physical restraints. Methods Emergency medicine nurses, patient support associates, and protective services officers underwent a 90-minute educational intervention in 2017. A 30-minute lecture focusing on communication and early use of medication for agitation was followed by a simulation using standardized participants, then a structured debriefing. A standardized return-on-learning …

Benefits Of Using An Upright Laboring Position As Compared To Supine In The Second Stage Of Labor And The Impact On The Use Of Assisted Devices, Chelsey Cook
Master of Science in Nursing Family Nurse Practitioner
Abstract: This paper explores the conclusion that women and their infants are at an increased risk for harm when assisted devices are used during the second stage of labor. Traditional practices involving a supine position during pushing have been associated with an elevated likelihood of assisted delivery, necessitating interventions such as forceps, vacuum extraction, or episiotomy. However, emerging evidence suggests that adopting an upright position during labor may help decrease the need for these interventions and positively impact maternal and fetal outcomes.
Although comprehensive research on this topic is limited, the available evidence supports the benefits of an upright position …

Problem-based learning (PBL) utilizes a self-directed strategy. This process relies on group participation to succeed. Students without a background in biology or medicine can feel overwhelmed by the complexity of the subject matter and unable to participate in the group learning process. We incorporated curated educational videos in the PBL curriculum to help address this situation. First year medical students participated in this study in the form of a typical PBL session. They were then assessed on basic and clinical science knowledge and their learning experience. Student basic science and clinical knowledge were similar between the student groups. However, the …

Background: Human trafficking (HT) is a global and domestic concern that impacts individuals, families, and communities. Over the last ten years, HT has become a significant public health concern intersecting with the health care community in various settings. HT abuse and oppression have both short- and long-term health consequences. Approximately 50 to 88% of trafficked individuals visit a health care provider, and 63% of those visits are evaluated in the emergency department (ED). Nurse practitioners (NPs) working in the ED interact with HT individuals but have not been represented in recent research scholarship.

Diversity In Nurse Anesthesia Education: Understanding The Perspective Of Racial-Ethnic Minority Nurse Anesthesia Students, Lorette Osun, Jeannette Ineza
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
The idea that race is not an issue, everyone is treated fairly, and the denial of racial differences is an act to refute that racism still perpetuates nursing education. Racial-ethnic minority student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNA) face unique challenges in their didactic and clinical training, including microaggressions, discrimination, and bias, all of which white students do not have to face during their educational experiences (Carter & McMillian-Bohler, 2020). Our project sought to highlight the lived experiences of ethnic minority student registered nurse anesthetists in the United States to bring awareness and effectuate change in nurse anesthesia education. Our Qualtrics survey …
