The Impact Of Acute Sauna On Young And Middle-Aged Populations, Ari Young, Olivia Leach, Jayson Gifford

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Sauna exposure is a common form of whole-body heating therapy. Previous studies done on the older population, suggest a positive correlation between time spent in sauna and cardiovascular health. Heat stress induces changes in the vascular response, but the effects on middle-aged and young populations are unknown. PURPOSE: To determine effects of whole-body heating on vascular resistance and blood pressure in young and middle-aged populations. METHODS: We recruited 18 individuals (10 young; 4 female, male, age= ~24.9yrs and 8 middle-aged; 4 female, 4 male, age= ~55.75yrs). Two T-type thermocouples were placed in the esophagus and vastus lateralis to …

Acute Heat Stress On Blood Composition & Body Fluid In Young And Middle-Aged Individuals, Kaitlyn Strong, Olivia Leach, Jayson Gifford

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Sauna therapy has been shown to have benefits to cardiovascular health. Changes in hematocrit, hemoglobin, and plasma volume in response to sauna heating are not well defined in the middle-aged population. This population is of significant interest because of an increased rate of decline in cardiovascular health starting at middle age. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of acute sauna exposure on blood composition, specifically the change in plasma volume in young and middle-aged adults. METHODS: 10 young (24.9 ± 4.2 years, 6 male and 4 female) and 8 middle-aged adults (55.6 ± 3.9 …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Nitric oxide bioavailability increases following nitrate supplementation wherein oral microbiota facilitate the metabolism and absorption of nitrate. However, few studies have examined if co-ingestion of nitrate with antioxidants can further elevate nitric oxide bioavailability. Moreover, our understanding on how the oral microbiome responds to nitrate supplementation is limited, especially in women. PURPOSE: To examine the effects of ingesting dietary nitrate and ascorbic acid independently and concurrently on markers of nitric oxide bioavailability and oral microbiota species. METHODS: Twelve sedentary women of Hispanic descent (mean ± SD: age 20 ± 1 years; body mass 74 ± 15 kg; height …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Females are more likely to suffer Achilles tendon injury that consequently leads to more complications including pain or tendon rupture, and experiencing fewer benefits from therapeutic interventions. There is a lack of knowledge on how estrogen, which may limit collagen synthesis, can affect tendon health and growth. PURPOSE: The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between menstruation duration and cross-sectional area (CSA) of the Achilles tendon over a 5-month period of intensive dance training. We hypothesize the female dancers who reported a menstruation duration of 1-3 days will have the smallest average tendon CSA in comparison …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Persistent quadriceps dysfunction following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) may lead to further pathological complication. Quadriceps weakness has been linked to corticospinal excitability. However, it remains unclear how this altered corticospinal excitability contributes to ACLR patients during knee strength tasks when compared to healthy controls. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine force reproduction strategies during isometric knee extension between ACLR patients and healthy controls. METHODS: Five ACLR (20.40±1.67yrs, 72.12±12.87kg, 171.07±7.40cm) participants and five matched healthy controls (21.00±1.73yrs, 65.77±13.61kg, 166.62±11.99cm) performed an isometric force reproduction task. They were instructed to maintain 10% of maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) …

Social Jetlag Inhibits Exercise-Induced Adaptations In The Heart And Alters Markers Of Mitochondrial Dynamics, Graham R. McGinnis, Michael B. Dial, Elias M. Malek, Greco Neblina, Austin Cooper, Nikoleta Vasileva, Tanner Erwin 2023 University of Nevada Las Vegas

Social Jetlag Inhibits Exercise-Induced Adaptations In The Heart And Alters Markers Of Mitochondrial Dynamics, Graham R. Mcginnis, Michael B. Dial, Elias M. Malek, Greco Neblina, Austin Cooper, Nikoleta Vasileva, Tanner Erwin

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Social jetlag (SJL), or the shifting of behavior and sleep times between weekdays and weekends, is a pervasive form of circadian rhythm disruption that affects nearly 70% of the population to some extent. The magnitude of SJL can be determined by the difference in the mid-sleep phase between weekends and weekdays. Higher levels of SJL have been associated with lower levels of cardiorespiratory fitness, and increased incidence of cardiometabolic disease, which may be due, in part, to mitochondrial dysfunction. However, no studies to date have evaluated the effects of long term SJL on cardiac mitochondrial dynamics. PURPOSE: To determine …

Effects Of Partial Hot Water Immersion On Postprandial Blood Glucose And Heart Rate Variability, Jeff Moore, Michael Buono 2023 San Diego State University

Effects Of Partial Hot Water Immersion On Postprandial Blood Glucose And Heart Rate Variability, Jeff Moore, Michael Buono

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

The acute effects of heat therapy on glycemic markers oppose those of the chronic effects. While the postprandial glucose response is exaggerated during whole body heat exposure, chronic heat exposure lowers HbA1c. Additionally, the acute effects of heat therapy differ depending on the amount of body exposed to heat. Heating a single hand does not increase fasting glucose and lowers postprandial glucose. The opposing effects of partial and whole body heat exposure could be mediated in part from increased sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity following heat stress. While heating the body increases muscular blood flow and glucose uptake, SNS activation …

Validation Of Vertical Force Measures During Hop Tasks Using Pressure Insoles, Andrew Cho, Erin Cagle, Sylwia Lipior, Susan Sigward

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Assessment of vertical ground reaction forces (vGRF) during jumping and landing tasks is commonly used as a tool to quantify limb loading following injury. While embedded force plates are the current gold standard, cost and poor ecological validity limit their feasibility for assessment of loading during sport agility tasks. Wearable pressure insoles can measure plantar pressure wirelessly and may provide an alternative for on-field assessments. Previous studies have assessed the validity of insoles with varying results. Few studies have considered tasks that require both vertical and horizontal forces similar to those required for agility tasks. This may have important implications …

The Lived Experience Of Second-Degree Nursing Students’ Anxiety Before And During Their Initial Clinical Rotation, Shelly Wheatley 2023 Bellarmine University

The Lived Experience Of Second-Degree Nursing Students’ Anxiety Before And During Their Initial Clinical Rotation, Shelly Wheatley

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

Anxiety in nursing students can impact learning. Literature has shown that nursing students, especially those in second-degree nursing programs, report higher stress levels compared to other undergraduate students (Penprase & Koczara, 2009). Nursing clinicals can be jarring for students and present many stressors that can impeded learning and cause poor clinical performance. Much research has been done about traditional undergraduate students’ feelings of anxiety. There is a noted gap in research of second-degree, accelerated nursing students and their feelings about their initial clinical placement. Comparisons have often been made between traditional and nontraditional students, but the lived experiences of second-degree …

Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography-Related Early Perforations: A Study Of Effects Of Procedure Duration, Complexity, And Endoscopist Experience, Mark Aloysius, Hemant Goyal, Tejas Nikumbh, Niraj James Shah, Ghassan M Hammoud, Pritesh Mutha, Mairin Joseph-Talreja, Savio John, Ganesh Aswath, Vaibhav Wadhwa, Nirav Thosani

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Perforations (Perf) during endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) are rare (< 1%) but potentially fatal events (up to 20% mortality). Given its rarity, most data is through case series studies from centers or analysis of large databases. Although a meta-analysis has shown fewer adverse events as a composite (bleeding, pancreatitis, Perf) during ERCP performed at high-volume centers, there is very little real-world data on endoscopist and center procedural volumes, ERCP duration and complexity on the occurrence of Perf.

AIM: To study the profile of Perf related to ERCP by center and endoscopist procedure volume, ERCP time, and complexity from a national endoscopic repository.

METHODS: Patients from clinical outcomes research initiative-national endoscopic database (2000-2012) who underwent ERCP were stratified based on the endoscopist and center volume (quartiles), and total procedure duration and complexity grade of the ERCP based on procedure details. The effects of these variables on the Perf that occurred were studied. Continuous variables were compared between Perf and no perforations (NoPerf) using the Mann-Whitney U test …

Differential Contribution Of Cardiac And Peripheral Blood Flow To Metaboreceptor-Mediated Pressor Responses In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Matthew Pizano Gomez, Gabriel B. Carlota, Stephanie S. Wang, Areum K. Jensen 2023 San Jose State University

Differential Contribution Of Cardiac And Peripheral Blood Flow To Metaboreceptor-Mediated Pressor Responses In Autism Spectrum Disorder, Matthew Pizano Gomez, Gabriel B. Carlota, Stephanie S. Wang, Areum K. Jensen

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) experience a higher prevalence of hypertension than the general population. Abnormal blood pressure (BP) response to acute exercise is seen in hypertension. BP response evoked during exercise is the outcome of a central interaction between neural inputs such as the exercise pressor reflex. However, it is unclear if this neurocardiovascular interaction is altered differently to regulate BP during exercise in ASD. PURPOSE: To determine whether contributions of cardiac and peripheral blood flow to metaboreceptor-mediated pressor responses are different during exercise in ASD. METHODS: 21 young adults with and without ASD completed the study. …

Does Neuromuscular Fatigue Occur From One Doubles Pickleball Match?, Matthew Ritchey, Margaret Falknor, George Beckham, Eric Martin

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Pickleball is an emerging sport that is continuing to gain popularity among people of all ages. Little research has been completed on the performance aspects of the game. PURPOSE: Lower body force production is an important aspect of any sport. A countermovement jump is a useful way to test that characteristic. Acute decreases in force production are an indicator of fatigue. No previous research of force production and fatigue has been completed on pickleball. Therefore the purpose of this study was to test countermovement jump performance before and after a match of doubles pickleball to determine if neuromuscular fatigue …

Teaching Current And Future Professionals Techniques For Lay Communication: Validation Study Of Published Training Material, Jafra Thomas, Jasmine C. Wong, Solana R. Martin, Yi Sheng Wu

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Thomas et al. (2023), developed two mock physical activity promotion (PAP) material, which university students (and others) could practice critiquing and revising using the suitability assessment of materials (SAM) protocol. Their objective, however, was to produce mock material at two reading grade levels (11th & 8th RGL), meaning they did not compute suitability scores for other sub/main areas (eg, font size, literacy demand, respectively). PURPOSE: The purpose of the present study was to (1) establish trustworthy baseline data in other SAM sub/main areas for students to compare their own scores to (2) compare mock material SAM scores to one …
