Validity Of Body Volume Estimates From A Smartphone 3-Dimensional Scanning Application, Ethan G. Tinoco, Christian Rodriguez, Madelin R. Siedler, Christian Lavalle, Christine M. Florez, Sarah White, Alexandra Brojanac, Jaylynn Rasco, Gabrielle Dehaven, Grant M. Tinsley

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Body volume (BV) indicates the total 3-dimensional (3D) space an individual occupies. BV is either used alongside body mass in density-based two-compartment models or in conjunction with other body components in multi-compartment models to estimate body composition (BC). BV estimates are typically produced by costly laboratory methods, such as hydrostatic weighing or air-displacement plethysmography (ADP). However, more accessible options are emerging. Smartphone-based 3D scanning uses the phone’s built-in camera to provide a BV estimate in a time-efficient and cost-effective manner. However, few investigations have validated this method against an accepted laboratory technique. PURPOSE: To determine the validity of BV from …

Does 24-48 Or 48-96 Promote Better Rem Sleep Within Firefighters?, Ernesto Balderrama Jr, Raquel J. Cavazos, Cheyenne Martinez, Bryan G. Meek, Hussien K. Jabai, Vipa Bernhardt, MICHAEL D. OLDHAM 2024 Texas A&M University-Commerce

Does 24-48 Or 48-96 Promote Better Rem Sleep Within Firefighters?, Ernesto Balderrama Jr, Raquel J. Cavazos, Cheyenne Martinez, Bryan G. Meek, Hussien K. Jabai, Vipa Bernhardt, Michael D. Oldham

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

A firefighter’s work schedule can be very demanding regardless if they work 24 hours followed by a 48-hour time off schedule or a 48-hour on followed by a 96-hour time off. Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep could be the deciding factor of how well a firefighter can perform following a certain work schedule. REM sleep is associated with the mental activity of dreaming; an individual averages 20-25% REM sleep of their total sleep time (Carskadon & Dement, 2005). REM is important for recovery because it can impact cognitive functions such as impulse control and decision making (Brunet, et al, 2020). …

The Influence Of Initial Foot Position During Stand To Sit On Trunk And Knee Joint Movement Control, William V. Erlandson, Linda Steele 2024 The University of Texas at Tyler

The Influence Of Initial Foot Position During Stand To Sit On Trunk And Knee Joint Movement Control, William V. Erlandson, Linda Steele

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

During StandTS, trunk flexion and knee extensor eccentric control are two key factors influencing descending balance control of StandTS movement- trunk flexion plays an important role in controlling the vertical downward acceleration of the center of mass, while knee extensor eccentric control is essential for arresting the falling momentum to ensure a stable and safe landing. Since the initial foot position (IFP) is an important factor that can improve sit-to-stand (STS) performance by modifying STS kinematics and kinetics during the uprising phase, we explored the effects of IFPs on StandTS. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the …

The Influence Of High-Intensity Interval Exercise On Vitamin-D Concentrations In Healthy Individuals, Leroy K. Bolden, Tomas Chapman-Lopez, Ricardo Torres, Jeffery Heileson, Meena Meiyyappan, Jeff S. Forsse

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Vitamin D (VD) deficiency is one of the most common deficiencies in the world due to various factors (e.g., lack of sun exposure, dietary considerations). Currently the utilization of exercise may act as an intervention for VD deficiencies to promote increases in VD concentrations in healthy populations. This could largely be due to the loss of calcium from aerobic exercise (AE), leading to a hormonal response [(e.g., parathyroid hormone (PTH)] and the activation of cytochrome’s (e.g., CYP2R1, CYP27B1) responsible for the regulation of VD. Thus, AE may serve as an intervention to promote VD synthesis due to the impacted biological …

Machine Learning Analysis Of Chronotype And Mental Toughness In Predicting Sleepiness Among Collegiate Dancers: Preliminary Findings, Alyssa Hudson, Andreas Stamatis

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Understanding the interplay between chronotype (a trait-like characteristic denoting an individual's inherent preference for sleep and activity periods), mental toughness (MT; a state-like construct that equips individuals with the skills to endure adversity while pursuing goals), and sleepiness (a fluctuating state of propensity towards dozing off) is critical in domains where optimal performance is crucial, such as in athletics. The utilization of machine learning (ML) techniques to explore the impact of MT and chronotype on sleepiness categorization is notably scarce in collegiate dancing; thus, this approach could provide novel insights into managing dancers’ health and performance. PURPOSE: To evaluate …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Firefighters (FF) and law enforcement officers (LEO) have heightened cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk due to the stressful nature of their occupations. Data suggest that 45% of on-duty FF fatalities are related to CVD, while LEO have a 1.7 times higher CVD prevalence compared to the general public. To our knowledge, studies comparing FF to LEO, in terms of CVD risk factors, have not been published. This information is necessary to better understand differences in occupational disease risk, as well as to help bridge the gap between stress and CVD markers. PURPOSE: To compare CVD risk biomarkers, fitness, and body …

Validation Of A Non-Invasive Physiological Stress Assessment: Agreement Of Salivary And Blood Cortisol Among Firefighters, Caiti Dodge, Hunter Martaindale, Steven E. Martin, Lisa C. Colvin, Drew E. Gonzalez, Matthew J. McAllister 2024 Texas A&M University

Validation Of A Non-Invasive Physiological Stress Assessment: Agreement Of Salivary And Blood Cortisol Among Firefighters, Caiti Dodge, Hunter Martaindale, Steven E. Martin, Lisa C. Colvin, Drew E. Gonzalez, Matthew J. Mcallister

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings

Salivary cortisol has been used as an indicator of stress exposure among tactical personnel (i.e., firefighters). Assessing cortisol concentrations, whether via blood or saliva samples, can provide valuable insight into the physiological stress load placed upon the firefighter. Cortisol levels provide a reflection of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activity. Salivary cortisol is unbound and has been suggested to provide a better reflection of HPA axis activity compared to blood cortisol, which is bound to soluble corticosteroid-binding globulin. Importantly, the use of salivary biosample collection also offers a more practical and non-invasive method to assess physiological stress biomarkers when blood sample …
