Does Medical School Prepare Doctors to Treat Sexual Health?

Abstract

Introduction: Sexual function is a normative process warranting the equal attention of preventive and treatment services throughout the lifespan. Despite growing recognition of the value of human sexuality in clinical settings, there is no standardized sexual wellness curriculum universally administered in medical schools. Accordingly, many current and future physicians feel underprepared when taking care of patients’ sexual health needs.

• African Americans and other racial minorities remain underrepresented in medicine (UIM)¹, as do LGBTQ+ individuals.²
• Lack of physician diversity likely contributes to and exacerbates existing healthcare disparities.³
• Addressing medical school admissions is an appropriate target to improve overall physician diversity as the U.S. medical school populations critically lacks diversity which further perpetuates the problem.
• Few studies have focused on the medical school interview process as a potential site of bias, and there are no studies to date discussing the bias that may stem from faculty interview reports.

• Problem Statement: Current Healthy People 2030 data suggests that only up to 25% of infants are exclusively breastfed at six months of life, but target rates are upwards of 40%. Though this trend is multifactorial, an actionable solution is to increase lactation education for residents and medical students to better equip them to counsel patients.
• Project AIM: We aim to increase provider comfort in lactation counseling by implementing lactation education, resources, hands-on training, and postpartum follow-up strategies for Thomas Jefferson University pre-clerkship/ rotating medical students and OB/GYN residents.

Due to growing health disparities in underserved communities, a comprehensive approach is needed to train physicians to work effectively with patients who have cultures and belief systems different from their own. To address these complex healthcare inequities, Rowan-Virtua SOM implemented a new curriculum, The Tensegrity Curriculum, designed to expand beyond just teaching skills of cultural competence to include trainees' exploration of cultural humility. All graduates of a doctoral anesthesiology program are required to successfully pass the National Certifying Exam (NCE). Since 2011, the national average passage rate has decreased from 89.1% to 84.1% in 2021 (NBCRNA, 2023). Yamaguchi’s 2022 study revealed that students are positively impacted academically when they implement individual learning preferences. The purpose of this project was to identify individual learning preferences for students enrolled in the U.S. Army Nurse Anesthesiology program. This study aimed to perform a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of journals focused on dental education (Journal of Dental Education and European Journal of Dental Education) from 2014 to 2023. An ISI Web of Science Search was performed in October 2023 with no filters for language or keywords. Published articles between 2014 and 2018, 2019 and 2023, and 2014-2023, along with the top 100 cited articles published within this period were exported as txt files. Introduction: This study aimed to assess the healthcare experiences of transmasculine individuals in primary and gynecological care settings. An online, anonymous survey was conducted to gather insights into positive and adverse encounters, factors influencing care-seeking behaviors, and strategies for improving care delivery in this population.

Methods: A survey was administered between June 1st and July 23rd, 2023, recruiting participants from three LGBTQ+ affirming healthcare offices in South Jersey and via Reddit. Data analysis involved SPSS to gain information from 499 valid responses.

Results: The majority of participants (55%) were aged 18-24, with 51% identifying as transgender men. Over two-thirds (68.5%) …
