Objective: Smart room technology is an innovative way to prioritize the patient experience by providing patients with an easily accessible hospital companion. This study introduced smart room devices into hospitals to determine whether their use would improve the patient experience as compared with those who did not use the device.

Methods: We conducted a prospective cross sectional study from March through September at Thomas Jefferson University Methodist Hospital. The use of digital technologies to conduct large-scale research with limited interaction (i.e., no in-person contact) and objective endpoints (i.e., biological testing) has significant potential for the field of epidemiology, but limited research to date has been published on the successes and challenges of such approaches. We analyzed data from a cohort study of sexual minority men across the United States, collected using digital strategies during a 10-month period from 2017 to 2018. Clinical studies have shown high variability in telehealth across settings and populations. The opioid crisis in the United States has grown at an alarming rate. Children with cancer are at high risk for pain, and opioids are a first‐line treatment in this population. Accordingly, there is an urgent need to optimize pain management in children with cancer without contributing to the opioid crisis. This report details opportunities for this optimization, including clinical practice guidelines, comprehensive approaches to pain management, mobile health, and telemedicine. It is vital to balance appropriate use of analgesics with efforts to prevent misuse in order to reduce unnecessary suffering and minimize unintended harms.
