Health Workforce Research Center Publications

Telehealth has long been viewed as an important pathway for increasing access to care for underserved populations, while providing high quality care at low cost. The spread of telehealth in the United States, however, has been hampered by a range of reimbursement, equipment costs, and licensure barriers. In this study we examined the extent to which telehealth is being used in settings that are among the locations most in need: the National Health Service Corps (NHSC) approved grantee sites. Journal for Evidence-based Practice in Correctional Health

Purpose: To examine self-care for diabetes in the incarcerated population within the framework of the Rediscovery of Self-Care (RSC), a newly developed care model for persons with incarceration experience

Organizing Construct: Diabetes is a chronic illness that requires the development and use complex self-care management skills. The RSC is a strengths-based model promoting the belief that inmate- patients are capable of re-discovering their own strengths for self-care.

Findings: Persons with an incarceration experience have person and environment exposures that reduce their self-care capabilities for diabetes. Using a clinical case management approach, clinicians can assist incarcerated persons with re-entry …

Federally Qualified Health Centers(FQHC) and Community Health Centers are growing with the Affordable Care Act. This paper introduces literature that supports the need for Community Health Centers and management of low income patients with chronic illnesses. This paper also reviews the fieldwork experience at a FQHC. It reviews the goals, project, methods and findings of the fieldwork. This paper also elaborates on the scope of the project and a quality improvement report for the FQHC in observation. Complexity And Chaos In Surgical Start Times, Dennis J. Baumgardner

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

In discussing an article investigating the causes for delay of first-case operating room start times included in this issue of the Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews, the editor uses elements of complexity science and chaos theory to explain that such stubborn problems rarely stem from one of a few isolated causes. Taking a whole systems approach that utilizes flexibility, cross training, enhanced communication, common sense and perhaps mathematical models is suggested to effect positive change.

Avian influenza viruses (AIVs) continue to pose a global threat. Waterfowl are the main reservoir and are responsible for the spillover of AIVs to other hosts. This study was conducted as part of routine surveillance activities in Bangladesh and it reports on the serological and molecular detection of H5N1 AIV subtype. A total of 2169 cloacal and 2191 oropharyngeal swabs as well as 1725 sera samples were collected from live birds including duck and chicken in different locations in Bangladesh between the years of 2013 and 2014. Samples were tested using virus isolation, serological tests and molecular methods of RT-PCR. …

Significant Federal investments under the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act of 2009 and the Affordable Care Act have motivated many community health centers (CHCs) to implement electronic health records (EHRs) in the past few years. Evidence suggests that EHR implementation causes significant changes in how primary care clinicians spend their time and may be associated with changes in staff and facility level productivity. However, the mechanisms to explain these changes were mostly speculative. The assessment plan was developed to assess the College of Health Professions (CHP) student learning outcomes (SLOs). The SLOs were developed by CHP Dean and then revised by the Dean’s Administrative Council, and the CHP Academic Affairs Committee. They were approved by the CHP faculty in spring 2015. The student learning outcomes were developed based on the CHP mission statement and core values. The mission statement, core values, and student learning outcomes are included below.

Twitter may be a data resource to support healthcare research. Literature is still limited related to the potential of Twitter data as it relates to healthcare. The purpose of this study was to contrast the processes by which a large collection of unstructured disease-related tweets could be converted into structured data to be further analyzed. This was done with the objective of gaining insights into the content and behavioral patterns associated with disease-specific communications on Twitter. Twelve months of Twitter data related to cancer, diabetes, and asthma were collected to form a baseline dataset containing over 34 million tweets. As …
