Advances in Cancer Education and Quality Improvement

Introduction: The growing emphasis on patient-centered care, along with the rise of open-access publications and online platforms, has increased patient demand for education about their medical conditions. In this context, patient-friendly language summaries of fundamental cancer clinical trials may be valuable resources for patients to learn more about their disease and treatment options.

Methods: We surveyed patients diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) to assess the availability and need for easy-to-understand resources related to treatment decision-making and side effect profiles. Patients were also provided an example patient-friendly language summary and asked for feedback.

Burnout afflicts 35% to 44% of pediatric oncology physicians, nurses, and interprofessional staff and is related to excessive workloads and emotional exhaustion. Conversely, a healthy work environment is a protective factor for burnout among physicians and nurses. Meaningful recognition is a published standard necessary for creating a healthy work environment. This study aimed to reduce staff burnout through firgun, defined as a heartfelt way to express accomplishments of another person. Pediatric oncology staff completed a firgun educational module and logged acts of firgun during a 3-month study period. During the COVID-19 pandemic, deaths per case in the United States decreased from 7.46% in April 2020 to 1.76% in April 2021. One mechanism that could explain this decline is a learning effect associated with testing of new treatments by hospitals. Hospitals that participated in clinical trials developed better organizational capabilities to diagnose and treat COVID-19 patients. Simultaneously, hospitals used health information technologies (IT) that integrated health information across healthcare providers to facilitate greater learning and sharing of best practices. This study aimed to evaluate whether the assignment of dedicated triage nurses could reduce triage procedure time in the ED. The study employed an observational cross-sectional design using secondary data extracted from the Hospital Information System (HIS) at XYZ Private Hospital, Bogor. A medical resume serves as a vital document that compiles essential information related to a patient’s clinical management. In 2019, the completeness rate of medical resume documentation at Pesawaran Regional General Hospital was only 37.4%. This study aimed to identify factors influencing the completeness of medical resume documentation by doctors through a quantitative, cross-sectional design involving 37 inpatient care doctors. Data were collected via questionnaires and direct observation, then analyzed using univariate, bivariate (Chi-Square), and multivariate (Logistic Regression) methods. This study aims to evaluate the impact of implementing an Emergency Department Observation Unit (EDOU) combined with an Emergency Medicine (EM) specialist-led disposition process on ED LOS at a national referral hospital in Indonesia. This was a retrospective, pre-post analysis comparing all ED visits in 2023 (pre-intervention, n = 26,282) with all visits in 2024 (post-intervention, n = 31,483). Purpose/Background

The Papanicolaou “pap” smear screens for cervical cancer in women ages 21-65 with a cervix. Inconsistent locations for lab results lead to a decrease in provider efficiency, and patients are unaware of results or recommended follow-up. This quality improvement project implemented a tracking tool within the electronic medical record (EMR) in a busy midwifery clinic. The outcomes are the identification of patients overdue for pap smears, scheduling the procedure, recording of results, and patient notification with recommended follow-up.

Early childhood home visiting programs improve maternal and child health outcomes but remain underutilized. Healthcare providers are well-positioned to connect families to home visiting services; however, structural barriers in clinical settings limit consistent and effective referral practices. The Home Visiting Referral Quality Improvement Initiative (THRIVE) change package was developed to provide a starting point for addressing these challenges.
