Given the increasing prevalence of online data collection, it is important to know how behavioral data obtained online compare to samples collected in the laboratory. This study compares online and in-person measurement of speech perception in older children and adolescents. Speech perception is important for assessment and treatment planning in speech-language pathology; we focus on the American English /r/ sound because of its frequency as a clinical target. Two speech perception tasks were adapted for web presentation using Gorilla: identification of items along a synthetic continuum from rake to wake, and category goodness judgment of English /r/ sounds in words …

Cognitive reserve refers to the brain’s ability to efficiently adapt in the presence of neuropathological disease. This is an active process influenced by individual differences (e.g., genetics) and lifetime experiences (e.g., education, occupation, leisure) (Cabeza et al., 2018; Stern et al., 2020). The purpose of this study was to survey female high school athletes’ knowledge of sport-related concussion (SRC) long-term impacts. This study utilized the Rosenbaum Concussion Knowledge and Attitudes Survey – Student Version regarding the knowledge and attitudes high school athletes have towards SRCs to determine if they knew the severity of the possible long-term impacts. The survey was distributed to two female contact sport teams at one high school in Northeast Arkansas. The results of the study showed that high school female athletes possessed greater SRC knowledge but did demonstrate the safest attitudes towards sustaining an SRC. While the study …

The task of producing good quality instrumental music requires musicians to spend many years auditorily training their ears. The purpose of this study was to determine if musicians have advanced central auditory processing (CAP) abilities compared to non-musicians. The participants included nine musicians and ten non-musicians. The SCAN-3:A for adolescents and Adults: Tests for Auditory Processing disorder was administered to each participant. This test included Filtered Words (auditory closure), Auditory Figure Ground (speech in background noise), and Competing Words/Sentences (dichotic listening). Results showed that scores for all subtest, except Competing Sentences, were statistically significantly higher for musicians compared to non-musicians. …

The study aimed to analyze the impact of the frequent use of personal listening devices on college student's perception of individuals who wear hearing aids. Furthermore, this thesis aimed to determine if college students who use personal listening devices more frequently rate individuals who wear hearing aids more favorably than students who use personal listening devices less often. The purpose of this reflection is to expand the knowledge on the retention of early Black female faculty by exploring their challenges and triumphs in dismantling Whiteness and developing an authentic sense of belonging in the academy. In higher education, Black women experience marginalization at the intersection of anti-black racism and sexism. Faculty of color experience racial microaggressions, excessive workloads and service expectations, and their expertise is seldom recognized. Despite these challenges, marginalized faculty authentically persist and find a sense of belonging within the ivory tower by building mentorship relationships, departmental DEI efforts, opportunities for innovation, and cultivating Black sisterhood. …

Abstract 1- Introduction: Nonorganic hearing loss is not typically associated with a detectable pathology.Both adults and children can present to the clinic with nonorganic hearing loss. It is often the result of psychosocial stressors and is more common in children, specifically 6 to 19 years old. Case Presentation: An 11-year-old child presented to the clinic with bilateral mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss, but prior exams showed unilateral hearing loss on the left side. There is a lack of research that specifies the long-term effects on a child’s language development when prenatally exposed to opioids (Fill et al.,2018; Rutherford et al., 2022). Despite this, children prenatally exposed to opioids are more likely to be referred for, qualify for, and receive therapy services secondary to developmental delays and speech/language deficits. This art series visualizes the signs, symptoms, and intervention strategies for various speech and language disorders. The illustrations were lightly sketched onto the canvas and oil-based paint was used as the medium. In the art series, the disorders depicted are childhood apraxia of speech, dysarthria, articulation disorder, and aphasia. The public and parents may be uninformed or have misconceptions about communication disorders. Therefore, it is important to educate others about communication disorders to construct a network of support, respect, and learning different ways to communicate since speech and language disorders can make a profound impact on a person’s life.

This project evaluates the accessibility of cave tours in Mammoth Cave National Park for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community (DHHC). The study was advertised to the DHHC with the use of flyers through the Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, First Baptist Church Bowling Green’s Deaf Ministry, WKU social media, and directly to visitors who contacted the park seeking services. Purpose: This quality improvement project aimed to address the inconsistent use of clinical labels across a preschool speech and language program in Ontario, Canada. The study investigated whether a multi-component knowledge translation intervention could increase speech-language pathologists’ (SLPs’) knowledge about the recommended clinical labels, motivate their intentions to use the labels, and facilitate practice change during a three-month pilot period.

Purpose: The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the perceptions of communication sciences and disorders (CSD) assistant professors in the United States related to barriers and facilitators to engaging in open science (OS) practices and identify opportunities for improving OS training and support in the field.

Method: Thirty-five assistant professors (16 from very high research activity (R1) institutions, 19 from institutions with other Carnegie classifications) participated in one 1-hour virtual focus group conducted via Zoom recording technology. The researchers used a conventional content analysis approach to analyze the focus group data and develop categories from the discussions.
