Hallucinogenic Neoshamanism As Antimodernism: Development And Ethical Considerations, Ethan Thompson

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Humans have been using hallucinogenic plants and fungi for thousands of years. Historically, people around the world have made use of these substances to aid in their spiritual development. Studies of the usage of hallucinogens in indigenous societies often use the term “shamanism” to characterize the associated system of belief and ritual practices. In popular understanding, shamanism is a religious system that features highly ritualized performances in which a practitioner (shaman) utilizes an altered state of consciousness to gain access to realms inhabited by spirits with the intent of recruiting their help to resolve a problem, cure a patient, correct …

10-Minute Ebd: Charcoal Toothpastes Pose Risks With Few Benefits, Kelly Lemke Dds, Ms

The Journal of the Michigan Dental Association

The rising popularity of charcoal toothpaste, fueled by social media influencers and claims of teeth-whitening benefits, prompts an investigation into its effectiveness and potential risks. The article explores the evidence through a PICO (Population, Intervention, Comparison, Outcome) question focused on patients seeking whiter teeth. A literature review reveals limited scientific validation for the cosmetic or health benefits of charcoal-containing oral products. The abrasiveness of charcoal toothpaste poses risks, potentially leading to enamel loss, dentin exposure, and hypersensitivity. Lack of fluoride in many charcoal toothpaste formulations raises concerns about caries risk. The article emphasizes the importance of dental providers conducting due …

Multimodal Approach To Chronic Pain Management And Prevention Of Opioid Use Disorder, Hannah Elston 2022 University of Arkansas, Fayetteville

Multimodal Approach To Chronic Pain Management And Prevention Of Opioid Use Disorder, Hannah Elston

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses

Background. Chronic pain (CP) is a major public health problem that affects one-third of the population and can interfere with the activities of daily life and cause decreased quality of life. Patients with CP have been increasingly prescribed opioids, contributing to the rise in the opioid epidemic. Due to the long-term nature of CP, the use of opioids as the sole treatment for CP can cause tolerance and increased dosages overtime which can lead to addiction and potentially overdose. Therefore, CP treatment should include multimodal approaches to treatment to prevent opioid misuse, opioid use disorder (OUD), and overdose. Multimodal treatments …

Duane Retraction Syndrome (DRS) is characterized by limited eye movement. One of its causes is a mutation in the CHN1, MAFB, or SALL4 gene. Nowadays, the treatment for DRS is limited to glasses, occlusion, and surgery. However, this treatment has not been able to cure the disease’s hereditary issue. Another strategy to be considered for the treatment is CRISPR/Cas9, a tool for performing gene editing with a wide range of applications, including treating genetic diseases. We made sgRNA as a first step in using CRISPR/Cas9 as a treatment for DRS in silico using the CCTop website. By computing sgRNA, conducting …

The Impact Of Dietary Fiber On Breast Cancer Incidence, Peyton North

Epsilon Sigma at-Large Research Conference

Abstract

Introduction & Background

The role of dietary fiber in breast cancer etiology remains unclear. A negative correlation may be due to fiber’s ability to stave off obesity and aid in the extraction of serum estrogen, two known risk factors for the disease. Effects may differ by source, and type, of fiber. Most of the data available is from research with non-Hispanic white women. However, fiber intake may vary significantly across cultures.

Purpose Statement & Question

The research sought to investigate whether an increased intake of dietary fiber was associated with a corresponding decrease in the incidence of breast cancer. …

Music For The Relief Of Preoperative Anxiety, Tyler G. Roberts 2022 University of Texas at Tyler

Music For The Relief Of Preoperative Anxiety, Tyler G. Roberts

MSN Capstone Projects

Anxiety is a phenomenon commonly experienced by patients awaiting surgery (Jlala et al., 2010). Anxiety has been linked to negative impacts “on the induction of anesthesia, wound healing, risk of infection, and postoperative recovery” (Stern, 2013). The alleviation of preoperative anxiety is a positive and desired outcome for perioperative patients. An interview with a patient at University Medical Center yielded some insight into the need for the implementation of additional anxiety alleviating intervention. In the interview, the patient reported feeling distress from being able to hear everything that was happening outside of the patient’s preoperative room and feeling a large …
