Miami Furniture Study, Center For Economic Development
Center for Economic Development Technical Reports
This research project, under the guidance of Dr. John Mullin and Professor Zenia Kotval, sought to study and examine Miami's fledgling furniture cluster as well as key elements of the American furniture industry. I believe that this report presents an honest unbiased "snapshot" of the American furniture industry and the City of Miami's furniture design district. All of the information contained within this report has been cited and referenced to the best of my ability.

The Film Industry Cluster Development Recommendations For Western Massachusetts, Center For Economic Development
Center for Economic Development Technical Reports
California is home to the world's largest movie clusters. It grew out of the need to extend beyond New York's confined environment. The opportunities that lay ahead were carefully planned and exploited. For Western Massachusetts to learn from this example it will have to discover a niche that can be marketed as truly worthy of attracting businesses away from established clusters. This will require a top-down approach from government bodies to ensure that a successful cluster fits wit the New England lifestyle. Current opportunities exist within factory towns that have available old mill buildings and infrastructure. Unfortunately the establishment of …

Mill Redevelopment In Rural Massachusetts Why There? And Not Here?, Center For Economic Development
Center for Economic Development Technical Reports
The purpose of this work is to identify both the obstacles and successful strategies of mill redevelopment in rural Massachusetts. While redevelopment has occurred in the historic industrial corridors of the Blackstone and Merrimac rivers, it has been largely absent in rural areas of Massachusetts. Therefore, the goal of this paper is to explain the forces that have acted as a catalyst for mill redevelopment in these areas, and examine why that has not occurred in rural New England. Our research has found that there are several obstacles that exist in rural areas that make mill redevelopment particularly challenging. However, …

The Community Geography Project is a Ford Foundation-funded program that provides training in Geographic Information System (GIS) technology and asset mapping methods to community-based nonprofit organizations in partnership with K-12 schools. The primary goal of the Project is to empower citizens, and it is hoped that the partnership between community- based groups and schools will be able to sustain technical and analytical expertise at the grassroots level. Although an overview of the lessons we have learned regarding access to hardware, software, and data are provided, this article focuses on questions regarding GIS training as related to citizen empowerment and provides …

A Road Map For Accessible, Affordable And Adaptable Broadband Telecommunications In Portland, Abdullah Al-Thabt, Jamison Cavallaro, David De La Rocha, Brendan C. Finn, Jonathan Konkol
Master of Urban and Regional Planning Workshop Projects
Portland needs to plan for broadband development and take steps to ensure these plans are implemented. In order to implement Portland's land use and economic development goals, broadband must be accessible to all users. This means that any home or business must have access to the best available network technology to meet their needs. Currently, broadband service is not provided at uniform levels City-wide. It must be affordable, which requires real competition among providers. Portland's market presently offers too few choices outside the central business district to meet this criterion. In addition, broadband must be adaptable to future uses. Without …
Periodic Atlas Of The Metroscape: Lassoing Urban Sprawl, Arthur C. Nelson, Thomas W. Sanchez
Periodic Atlas Of The Metroscape: Lassoing Urban Sprawl, Arthur C. Nelson, Thomas W. Sanchez
Metroscape
This issue's atlas compares the metroscape with four other metropolitan areas (San Antonio, Columbus, Charlotte, and Orlando). Using 1990 and 2000 census block group data, density classifications were used to show patterns of urban (3 ,000+ persons/ sq.mi .), suburban (1 ,000 to 3,000 persons/sq.mi .), exurban (300 to 1,000 persons/sq .mi.) , and rural (/sq.mi.) growth. While the metroscape experienced significant population growth from 1990 to 2000, compared to the other four, it realized the smallest loss of rural lands and significantly less suburban and exurban style development as well. By comparison, Orlando - the other metro area in …

Philip Shapira
Learning from Science and Technology Policy Evaluation, edited by Philip Shapira and Stefan Kuhlmann, presents US and European experiences and insights on the evaluation of policies and programs to foster research, innovation, and technology (RIT). In recent years, policymakers have promoted RIT policies to accelerate scientific and technological development in emerging fields, encourage new patterns of research collaboration and commercialization and enhance national and regional economic competitiveness. At the same time, budgetary pressures and new public management approaches have strengthened demands for RIT performance measurement and evaluation. The contributors, leading experts in science and technology policy and evaluation, analyze and …
