In this study we analyze the impact of the urban growth boundary on rural landscape change in Portland, Oregon, and Clark County, Washington,and assess the importance of rural and agricultural landscapes to residents of the rural-urban fringe. We selected five, 4-square mile areas in the greater Portland metropolitan area for the study. Four are in Oregon and cover the transition area from urban to rural land uses under different levels of pressure along the state-mandated and Metrodel ineated urban growth boundary. A native of Egypt, Nohad Toulan has been a faculty member at Portland State University since 1972 when he founded the Urban Studies Program at Portland State University. Under his leadership the program evolved from modest beginnings as an undergraduate certificate progam into a Ph.D. grant ing school and in 2000 it became the College of Urban and Public Affairs. The college has maintained its stature as one of the leading urban studies programs in the nation. Dr. Toulon also founded the Institute of Portland Metropolitan Studies in 1993. This issue's atlas compares the metroscape with four other metropolitan areas (San Antonio, Columbus, Charlotte, and Orlando). Using 1990 and 2000 census block group data, density classifications were used to show patterns of urban (3 ,000+ persons/ sq.mi .), suburban (1 ,000 to 3,000 persons/sq.mi .), exurban (300 to 1,000 persons/sq .mi.) , and rural (/sq.mi.) growth. While the metroscape experienced significant population growth from 1990 to 2000, compared to the other four, it realized the smallest loss of rural lands and significantly less suburban and exurban style development as well.
