Analysis Of Transit Fare Evasion In The Rose Quarter, Shimon Isreal, James G. Strathman

Tri-Met collected fare evasion data for buses and MAX trains passing outbound through the Rose Quarter Monday, June 11 through Saturday, July 7. Beginning September 2001, Tri-Met’s “Fareless Square’s” free zone was extended towards the Lloyd District, with an eastern boundary of NE 14th. Prior to this, all trips between the Central Business District and Lloyd Center required a full Zone 1 fare.

This briefing paper provides an analysis of high-tech activity in the Cleveland Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area (PMSA) from 1992 to 2000. It begins by defining the term high-tech industry, using criteria developed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). High-tech industries are then analyzed from the viewpoint of employment levels, average earnings, and number of establishments. The City of Cleveland’s share of high-tech activity is discussed along with a comparison of the Cleveland PMSA versus the U.S. The paper concludes with a summary analysis of Cleveland’s position n in the world of high-tech.

Regarding the regional employment rate: is the glass half full or half empty? While the question isn't really that simple, due to the methodology of calculating unemployment rates, it illustrates the classic quandary of ambiguous news. Oregon, like much of the country, has experienced a recent sharp increase in unemployment and the state's jobless rate was declared to be higher than the national average. While this news may appear alarming, in historical context, Oregon's November unemployment rate of 6.4% was not exceptionally high (the rate has since climbed higher). Effect Of Motor Vehicle Emissions On Respiratory Health In An Urban Area, David L Buckeridge, Richard Glazier, Bart J Harvey, Michael Escobar, Carl Amrhein, John Frank

Motor vehicles emit particulate matter < 2.5 microm in diameter (PM(2.5)), and as a result, PM(2.5) concentrations tend to be elevated near busy streets. Studies of the relationship between motor vehicle emissions and respiratory health are generally limited by difficulties in exposure assessment. We developed a refined exposure model and implemented it using a geographic information system to estimate the average daily census enumeration area (EA) exposure to PM(2.5). Southeast Toronto, the study area, includes 334 EAs and covers 16 km(2) of urban area. We used hospital admission diagnostic codes from 1990 to 1992 to measure respiratory and genitourinary conditions. We assessed the effect of EA exposure on hospital admissions using a Poisson mixed-effects model and examined the spatial distributions of variables. Exposure to PM(2.5) has a significant effect on admission rates for a subset of respiratory diagnoses (asthma, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, upper respiratory tract infection), with a relative risk of 1.24 (95% confidence interval, 1.05-1.45) for a log(10) increase in exposure. We noted a weaker effect of exposure on hospitalization for all respiratory conditions, and no effect on hospitalization for nonrespiratory conditions.

Girl World, a program within Alternatives Inc in the neighborhood of Uptown on Chicago’s North Side, provides gender specific and age appropriate programming for girls and young women ages 10 to 18. Program activities focus on increasing self-esteem and self-efficacy, encouraging teamwork and social justice awareness, and developing leaders. In partnership with CURL, Girl World designed and implemented Participatory Research asking the question "How do young African American women feel about their hair and what influences them to feel that way?" In the aftermath of the events of September 11, Oregon's economy has experienced a downturn, with some reports indicating that Oregon's unemployment rate is now second in the nation. Even before September 11, Oregon earned the dubious reputation of having the highest hunger rate in the nation. In a recent interview, Suzanne Feeney, Director of the Institute for Nonprofit Management and Associate Professor of Public Administration at Portland State University, spoke with Rachel Bristol, Executive Director of The Oregon Food Bank, to get her views about the struggle to feed the hungry.

Processes of embodiment and the spatialization of interior categories such as thought and memory are defining characteristics of Paul Auster's novels, essays, and poetry, and a brief survey of these aspects can offer a new perspective on Auster's oeuvre as an organic whole. It is the underlying assumption of this paper that the transformation of interior into exterior constitutes a specific instance of the transpositional processes discussed therein.
