This work is an update to the Regional Economic Indicators: Business and Innovation Climate report that was issued in August 2004. Although many of the same economic indicators are used in the analyses, there is a major difference between the two reports. The August 2004 release had a broad focus on the overall business climate in 36 comparable metro areas. The result was a single index—business and innovation climate. In this report, we focus almost exclusively on innovation and entrepreneurship, each with its own index.

This paper presents new knowledge about the current status of training on the economic value of stewardship practices in the Ohio Lake Erie basin. Local decision-makers shape coastal and watershed conditions but often do not appreciate the economic, fiscal, and ecological benefits that could be gained from sound stewardship practices. This study investigated the information and training about economic benefits available in the Ohio Lake Erie basin. Training providers and technical assistance professionals helped identify key training needs and challenges to decision-maker awareness of benefits. We found relatively few organizations offering training that incorporate economic or fiscal benefits into their …

The John H. Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field (Glenn) is one of 10 National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Centers. Glenn is situated on 350 acres adjacent to Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. Its physical plant includes over 150 buildings that contain a unique collection of world-class test facilities. Glenn also includes the 6,400-acre Plum Brook Station near Sandusky, Ohio, 50 miles west of Cleveland. It specializes in large-scale tests that would be hazardous within the confines of the main campus.

Since its establishment in 1902, Lake Hospital System (LHS) has been a community-based, not-for-profit provider of comprehensive healthcare services to the residents of Lake, eastern Cuyahoga, Geauga, and Ashtabula Counties. Today, LHS is the largest employer in Lake County, with 500 physicians and over 2,400 healthcare professionals working in seven facilities.

What is an employment center? McMillen (2003) defines an employment center as a “concentration of firms large enough to have significant effects on the overall spatial distribution of population, employment, and land prices.” Bogart (1998) sees employment centers as a collection of small open economies in a metropolitan area that specialize and trade with each other. Technically speaking, an employment center is a geographic area that exceeds a threshold employment density (employees per square mile) and a threshold employment level.

This study aims to contrast affordability and quality of life as factors of attraction and retention of workforce and businesses in Northeast Ohio’s metro areas with comparable regions across the country. The study is limited to reliable and available data for 36 metropolitan areas from 27 states. As presented, this study serves two purposes: it allows us to compare Cleveland to other metro areas in selected indicators,1 and it creates a valuable database of variables and indicators on affordability and quality of life in 36 metro areas.

This study reports on the contribution made by Playhouse Square Center to Northeast Ohio. The contribution comes in various forms, which are reflected in the report’s different sections. The first uses a traditional economic model to estimate the economic impact of Playhouse Square Center. It calculates how each dollar spent by, or due to the presence of, Playhouse Square generates additional spending and jobs in the local economy. The second type of contribution is through the various educational programs and events aimed at increasing interest and involvement in the arts. Scientific studies and resident testimony suggest that urban residents in low-income and minority communities have been subject to an unequal burden of environmental pollution and inequitable environmental enforcement practices. A key component of the equitable development and implementation of environmental policies is the participation of citizens and community-based organizations in the policy process. Such participation rests upon equitable access to agency-generated environmental information and effective use of that information by citizens. First, survey industrial activity in the city of Cleveland using employment and payroll data for the period from 1993 to 2000; report on key findings related to industry sectors and industries at the two-digit standard industrial classification (SIC) code level; and compare the city of Cleveland to suburban Cuyahoga County and the remainder of the Cleveland primary metropolitan statistical area (PMSA). Second, identify those industries in Cleveland that reported substantial employment levels, average annual wages, employment growth, and wage growth during the study period (high performing industries).
