Projections indicate that the disparity in population numbers will widen further by the year 2025 when the global population is expected to be 8.5 billion, and at that time about 84% will be living in the developing countries (World Resources Institute, 1992). Responding to contemporary urban changes and increasing social complexities, this research endeavours to determine whether recently arrived immigrants still follow residential configurations as prescribed by traditional urban ecological models or whether ethnic groups are displaying a new dispersed (i.e. ‘shot gun’) domiciliary pattern characterized by enclave scattering. A new conceptual model describing various spatial outcomes relative to primary destinations of initial immigrant settlement and subsequent relocation is developed according to propositions discussed in the literature review. There are twenty-eight formal Ontario Heritage Act “heritage conservation districts” currently in place in Ontario. Though some of these are now more than a decade old, little is known about how they have functioned. This study outlines the social and economic context out of which the Ontario Heritage Act was created and then examines a sample of four heritage conservation districts, including reviews of the district plans, field examinations of each district and interviews with the district administrators. This thesis addresses three critical problems affecting the implementation of “sustainable development”: historical naivety, media limitations, and non-anticipatory governance. Emphasis is placed on North America--primarily the United States complemented with a global perspective towards the latter aspect of the presentation. Over the past two decades, the literature regarding gentrification has become extensive. More recently, a smaller body of research has emerged. This research, which takes a more theoretical approach, accepts some of the views of earlier literature, but places an emphasis on explaining the underlying causes of gentrification, rather than describing its instances. The purpose of this thesis has been to consider recent literature on gentrification in terms of whether a relationship exists between contemporary demographic and societal changes and the process of gentrification. The massive rural to urban migration in developing countries has been identified as the cause of the existence of squatter settlements in the neighboring urban areas. This thesis puts forward a comprehensive theoretical framework of the process that leads to the formation and growth of such settlements. It is argued that, under intense urbanization, the number of urban migrants far exceeds the capacity of the receiving city to provide sufficient employment and housing opportunities. Between September 15 and December 15, 1980, staff members from the Kingston Harbourfront Archaeological Project conducted rescue excavations on a provincially owned property in the City of Kingston, Ontario. Excavation at the Kingston Harbourfront Site (Bb Gc-7) exposed structural and artifactual data representing four occupational periods and ranging in date from the late 1780's through to the present. A wide variety of structural remains representing military, commercial, industrial and residential developments were examined. This thesis is an empirical study of the crime of arson in Toronto from a geographical perspective. Although empirical in nature there is a framework of analysis that hopefully provides a starting point for theoretical development. The study is loosely organized around the framework of four areas of arson research which include: antecedent environmental conditions, organismic variables, actual firesetting behavior, and the consequences of firesetting. Studies of various types have indicated that high density housing and overcrowding may have effects on man’s well being and resident satisfaction. The study examines residents’ attitudes and perceptions of high density housing in two square mile tracts in the City of Kitchener. One tract is characterized by homogeneous land use; the other by mixed land use. Responses are obtained from sixty townhouse and sixty apartment units in each of the two sample tracts by use of a questionnaire. As a result most of the businesses in the project area were forced to move. This thesis examines the relocation decision which was made by the entrepreneurs who operated retail businesses in the Civic Square Area. Despite the existence of different levels of manufacturing in the various regions of Ontario, most previous studies of this phenomenon have concentrated on explanation of its locational pattern in southern Ontario only. In contrast, though, this thesis analyzes regional variation in the growth rate of manufacturing employment in a total provincial framework. Also, its approach differs in that it examines variation in the factors which account for manufacturing employment growth and whether or not these variations are consistent over space (between regions) and through time.

The major objective of this thesis is to develop a location model for golf facilities in Waterloo and Wellington counties. This is achieved by approaching the problem empirically within a systems framework. A description of the physical sites, the population, and the activity is presented, and then the demand for the activity is established by using two techniques: an income regression model, and a minimum population requirements model.
