Occupation is an important aspect of regional economy; it has been forgotten, however, in most studies of regional economies. We developed a set of benchmark occupation clusters that share similar knowledge and skills and examined the Cleveland metropolitan area based on the derived occupation clusters.

Since its establishment in 1902, Lake Hospital System (LHS) has been a community-based, not-for-profit provider of comprehensive healthcare services to the residents of Lake, eastern Cuyahoga, Geauga, and Ashtabula Counties. Today, LHS is the largest employer in Lake County, with 500 physicians and over 2,400 healthcare professionals working in seven facilities.

What is an employment center? McMillen (2003) defines an employment center as a “concentration of firms large enough to have significant effects on the overall spatial distribution of population, employment, and land prices.” Bogart (1998) sees employment centers as a collection of small open economies in a metropolitan area that specialize and trade with each other. Technically speaking, an employment center is a geographic area that exceeds a threshold employment density (employees per square mile) and a threshold employment level.

This study aims to contrast affordability and quality of life as factors of attraction and retention of workforce and businesses in Northeast Ohio’s metro areas with comparable regions across the country. The study is limited to reliable and available data for 36 metropolitan areas from 27 states. As presented, this study serves two purposes: it allows us to compare Cleveland to other metro areas in selected indicators,1 and it creates a valuable database of variables and indicators on affordability and quality of life in 36 metro areas.

Minority Threat And Police Strength From 1980 To 2000: A Fixed-Effects Analysis Of Nonlinear And Interactive Effects In Large U.S. Cities, Stephanie L. Kent, David Jacobs

Many studies have assessed threat theory by investigating the relationships between the size of minority populations and police strength. Yet these investigations analyzed older data with cross-sectional designs. This study uses a fixed-effects panel design to detect nonlinear and interactive relationships between minority presence and the per capita number of police in large U.S. cities in the last three census years. The findings show that the relationship between racial threat and the population-corrected number of police officers has recently become considerably stronger. In accord with theoretically based expectations, tests for interactions show that segregated cities with larger African American populations …

This study reports on the contribution made by Playhouse Square Center to Northeast Ohio. The contribution comes in various forms, which are reflected in the report’s different sections. The first uses a traditional economic model to estimate the economic impact of Playhouse Square Center. It calculates how each dollar spent by, or due to the presence of, Playhouse Square generates additional spending and jobs in the local economy. The second type of contribution is through the various educational programs and events aimed at increasing interest and involvement in the arts. Scientific studies and resident testimony suggest that urban residents in low-income and minority communities have been subject to an unequal burden of environmental pollution and inequitable environmental enforcement practices. A key component of the equitable development and implementation of environmental policies is the participation of citizens and community-based organizations in the policy process. Such participation rests upon equitable access to agency-generated environmental information and effective use of that information by citizens. This article focuses on the adoption of Internet technologies by environmental agencies as a mechanism for disseminating information and the implications for low-income and minority residents in urban communities. …

The economic value of an urban university to a metropolitan region is comprised of (1) the educational opportunities provided to students who rely on local institutions of higher education, (2) the unique contributions of urban universities to the social and political infrastructure of a region, and (3) the research and service contracts and other funds and philanthropic donations attracted to the campus by faculty and staff. While economic development programs are difficult to evaluate, the literature reveals important information about the level of success achieved by various programs. This briefing paper provides an analysis of high-tech activity in the Cleveland Primary Metropolitan Statistical Area (PMSA) from 1992 to 2000. It begins by defining the term high-tech industry, using criteria developed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). High-tech industries are then analyzed from the viewpoint of employment levels, average earnings, and number of establishments. The City of Cleveland’s share of high-tech activity is discussed along with a comparison of the Cleveland PMSA versus the U.S. The paper concludes with a summary analysis of Cleveland’s position n in the world of high-tech.
