Is there anyone alive in the United States today who does not know that the Super Bowl is coming up on Sunday? It is Super Bowl XXXVI, thirty-six in real numbers, and will be played in what should be the permanent home of the Super Bowl, New Orleans. There is no venue more appropriate, save perhaps Vegas, for this mid-winter festival of conspicuous consumption and conspicuous waste, not be mention decadence, in these high holy days of the American Empire.

It was just a year ago that Jennifer Capriati completed her remarkable and inspiring comeback with a victory in the Australian Open. She went on to win the French Open last year, her second grand slam victory, in what was certainly her best year of tennis since the early days before she hit the wall and her career disintegrated.

As Dallas Mavericks' owner Mark Cuban goes off to manage a Dairy Queen today it is a reminder not only of his insult of NBA referees but of three basic facts of American life. First, it takes no particular intelligence to become a billionaire. Second, some people have way too much money. And third, it is an absolutely futile exercise to criticize the referees in the National Basketball Association.

On Friday forty-four year old Thomas Junta was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Costin on July 5, 2000 in the Boston suburb of Reading. This piece of news is nothing extraordinary as similar items can be found in most daily newspapers across the country once or twice a year. What made this case of extraordinary interest across America, put it on Court TV, and attracted extensive coverage on the 24/7 news channels was the particular setting and circumstances of the case.

If the first few days of the New Year there are many indications 2002 could turn out to be much more than simply a palindromic delight. The seismic rumblings out of Gainesville, Florida yesterday overshadowed the Category Five Hurricane that swept from California to Nebraska on Thursday. The central focus of this study was to examine how individual difference factors could be used to explain various levels of consumer support for a specific sport property. The present study extends the Sport Interest Inventory (SII) in order to enhance current understanding of consumer motives in relation to sport in general and women's competitive sport in particular. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the 12-item Sport Interest Inventory, measuring 14 individual difference factors related to spectator interest in soccer. There is limited published research in the area of superstition in sports as it relates to an athlete's anxiety and performance. This study was designed to examine this relationship through the administration of a demographic questionnaire, a list of ritualistic and superstitious behavior and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. Participants were members of 5 Eastern Illinois University Varsity athletic teams. Results indicate several differences across gender when comparing five athletic teams (men's baseball, basketball, and track and women's track and softball) with their anxiety and superstitious behavior levels. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there was a difference in goal orientation among athletes across gender and levels of competition. A second purpose was to determine if perceived motivational climate was correlated with the type of goal orientation that basketball players of both gender and different levels of competition developed. The subjects in this study consisted of 191 basketball players. Specifically, (n)= 25 male collegiate athletes, (n)= 55 high school males, (n)= 47 female collegiate athletes, and (n)= 64 high school females. The purpose of this study was to examine if female athletes' physical self-perceptions are different when comparing their Physical Self-Perception Profile (PSPP) scores within their competitive season with their scores during the off-season. The second purpose was to determine if physical self-perception varied as a function of their athletic identity.
