On Sport and Society

The death of Marty Glickman last week brought back a number of memories. In and around the New York area people recalled Glickman as voice of the Knicks and any number of other teams on New York radio sports. Across the nation, and indeed perhaps even across the world, Glickman's death brought back memories of the 1936 Olympic Games and the horror of Hitler's final solution. The latter was without a doubt more significant as it affected sport as well as the course of world history.

A Durkheimian Analysis Of Anomie And Deviance In The National Football League: An Exploratory Case Study, Eric M. Carter

The purpose of this study was to determine whether Durkheim’s concept of anomie applies to National Football League players. This study was an attempt to discover if and why NFL players are more likely to commit deviant acts. Why do these players that seemingly have everything throw their lives away by committing crimes? This study attempts to address these questions by linking Durkheim’s classic anomie theory with the deviance in the NFL.

Black Or White: A Content Analysis Of Newspaper Coverage Dealing With Nba Players & Race, Daniel Eric Newman

A content analysis of The New York Times and The Washington Post was conducted to determine if there were differences in the coverage devoted to African-American and Caucasian players in the National Basketball Association from July 1, 1999, through June 30, 2000.

The study examined 96 randomly chosen articles, 48 from each publication, to determine trends with regard to coverage of each race.

While the hypotheses predicted African-American players would receive more negative coverage than their Caucasian counterparts, the results showed that Caucasian players actually receive slightly more negative coverage.

Previous research has shown that motivation to participate in athletics is influenced by a variety of factors. A great number of studies have identified several of these factors including age, gender and scholarship status (Amorose and Horn, 2000). However very little research has been conducted regarding how the type of sport may influence motivation.

Coach-Athlete Philosophy And Team Cohesion In Collegiate Women's Basketball, Angela R. Patzner

The study examined the effects of coach-athlete philosophy of various collegiate level women's basketball teams on team cohesion levels as perceived by the athletes. The philosophic orientation of head coaches (n = 4) and athletes (n = 43) was determined by use of the Philosophic Affiliation Team Survey (PATS). The team cohesion levels, as scored by the Group Environment Questionnaire, GEQ (Carron, Windmeyer, & Brawley, 1985), were compared between those coaches and athletes who displayed a philosophic match and those who did not match. Many high-performing Australian Football (AF) players appear to be better at 'reading the play' than other AF players. One cognitive capacity that appears to be similar in nature to 'reading the play', and that has been associated with the performance of elite pilots, is Situational Awareness (SA). This study describes the influences on continued sporting participation in netball for a group of adolescent girls as they make the transition from primary to secondary school and between sub-junior and junior sporting structures. A qualitative research design using one to one and semi structured focus group interviews was applied. The research describes how these meanings and identities both influence decisions about ongoing sporting participation and are influenced by situations, events and people as the participants move from primary to secondary school. There has been lots of issues raised about athletes retirement in Malaysia but no research has been conducted on this matter yet. The aim of the study was to explore, determine and describe the experiences of retired Malaysian elite athletes as they faced the twilight of their sport careers and moved to a new and different stage in life. Terry Orlick's EARIS- Questionnaire was used to conduct in-depth interviews with 51 Malaysian elite athletes ( 34 males and 17 females) who had retired from competitive sports.
