Black Immigrant Community Of Washington, D.C.: A Public History Approach, Portia James
Black Immigrant Community Of Washington, D.C.: A Public History Approach, Portia James
Trotter Review
In the Washington, D.C. area contemporary Black community life has been shaped in large part by a pattern of migration and settlement of African Americans from southern states. But international immigration has also made its mark on the local Black community. Today, Washington and its suburbs in Virginia and Maryland are home to significant populations of Black people from Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean. This international movement of people has resulted in the broadening of Black community life and the development of a multicultural and multi-ethnic Black population in the area.

To date, the scholarship covering the Black Codes has centered on these laws' role as the predecessor of Jim Crow. Little study has been given to the laws as a whole--the one encompassing work being Theodore Wilson's Black Codes of the South. Other studies have examined the Black Codes' effect on specific states; however, no specific study has been done on the Black Codes of Kentucky and Tennessee nor has any study been made of these laws' relation to the antebellum Slave Code. This project therefore will represent an attempt to show that the Black Codes of Tennessee and Kentucky …

While Indian tribes across the nation scrample to erect casinos under the auspices of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, Maine's own Passamaquoddy Time saw their proposal to build a casino in Calais, shot down on grounds that it is illegal.
