Protecting Indigenous Identity And Culture In The Modern Nation-State: A Case Study Of The Sami In Norway, Claire Lockerby

The plight of indigenous peoples around the world is a serious one, and without significant international action, many valuable cultural and linguistic traditions are in grave danger of disappearing altogether. Many of these indigenous groups have experienced detrimental consequences from the history of slavery, colonialism and imperialism, and the emergence of nation-states that stripped them of their autonomy and greatly threatened their way of life. Today, there are some positive examples of international and national efforts to protect indigenous peoples, but unfortunately, most indigenous populations remain dispossessed and underrepresented. Do Judges Vary In Their Treatment Of Race?, David S. Abrams, Marianne Bertrand, Sendhil Mullainathan

Are minorities treated differently by the legal system? Systematic racial differences in case characteristics, many unobservable, make this a difficult question to answer directly. In this paper, we estimate whether judges differ from each other in how they sentence minorities, avoiding potential bias from unobservable case characteristics by exploiting the random assignment of cases to judges. We measure the between-judge variation in the difference in incarceration rates and sentence lengths between African-American and White defendants. We perform a Monte Carlo simulation in order to explicitly construct the appropriate counterfactual, where race does not influence judicial sentencing. In our data set, …

Το κείμενο αυτό είναι μέρος μιας ευρύτερης προβληματικής η οποία θεωρεί ότι η συνολική Κυπριακή πολιτειακή εμπειρία αποτελείται από ένα σύστημα πολλαπλών, αντιφατικών και αλληλο-τεμνόμενων καθεστώτων εξαίρεσης, το οποίο βιώνει μια βαθειά ή καλύτερα οργανική κρίση. Από την μια μεριά τείνει να διαιωνίζει τους όρους ύπαρξης του μέσα από την σταδιακή κανονικοποίηση του, και από την άλλη μεριά όμως το ίδιο το σύστημα παρουσιάζει τέτοιες βαθύτατες δυσλειτουργίες που υπονομεύουν την ίδια ύπαρξη του. Βασική ιδέα είναι ότι βιώνουμε το εξής παράδοξο: καθώς το καθεστώς εξαίρεσης φαίνεται να διευρύνεται και να κανονικοποιείται σε παγκόσμιο επίπεδο, το πολλαπλό κυπριακό καθεστώς εξαίρεσης υπονομεύεται …

Preservation Ethics In The Case Of Nebraska’S Nationally Registered Historic Properties, Darren Michael Adams
Department of Geography: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation focuses on the National Register of Historic Places and considers the geographical implications of valuing particular historic sites over others. Certain historical sites will either gain or lose desirability from one era to the next, this dissertation identifies and explains three unique preservation ethical eras, and it maps the sites which were selected during those eras. These eras are the Settlement Era (1966 – 1975), the Commercial Architecture Era (1976 – 1991), and the Progressive Planning Era (1992 – 2010). The findings show that transformations in the program included an early phase when state authorities listed historical resources …

Liberalism And The Limits Of Inclusion: Race And Immigration Law In The Americas, 1850-2000, David Cook-Martín, David Fitzgerald

The relationship between classical political liberalism and racism poses distinct puzzles for different schools of scholarship. On the one hand, conventional accounts maintain that racism has been an aberration in politically liberal regimes. In the field of international migration, prominent analysts have argued that politically liberal regimes are inherently incompatible with legal discrimination based on race. Yet an examination of immigration and nationality laws throughout the Americas from 1850 to 2000 suggests that racial discrimination has been more common in liberal than in illiberal countries of immigration. The project led by Immanuel Wallerstein’s which is re-examining various aspects/dimensions of polarisations over the last 500 years is a fascinating and ambitious project: ten aspects of the transformations/trends over this long period were chosen in order to examine how matters have been transformed during this time in the core, semi-periphery and periphery of the world-system. The broad themes are the following: wealth; deruralization; urbanization; state power; citizenship’; enterprises; ecology; gender; cultural practices and deviance. Not all papers are so far at the same level of advancement but they will promise to be so in a year’s time.
