It Piques A Novice’S Curiosity And Engages The Experienced: A Review Of Designing Qualitative Research (The Sage Qualitative Research Kit), Julius Kyakuwa

The Qualitative Report

This book is one of ten in The SAGE Qualitative Research Kit and addresses the fundamental design issues in qualitative research. It outlines a framework for the other books in the kit on a practical and methodological level. Flick discusses obstacles in realizing success, technical matters like ethics, achieving quality, generalization, and considerations regarding the researcher’s perspective in qualitative research designs. Several examples that support and motivate the text are derived from the author’s qualitative research projects and publications. The book is appropriate for novice qualitative researchers and sufficiently informative to engage but also refresh the perspectives of the experienced …

A Book Of Possibilities – Ethnographically Speaking: Autoethnography, Literature, And Aesthetics, Kelsey Railsback Dec 2019

A Book Of Possibilities – Ethnographically Speaking: Autoethnography, Literature, And Aesthetics, Kelsey Railsback

The Qualitative Report

I would say this book is successful in reference to the authors’ intention to showcase ethnographic projects that “blur the boundaries between social science and literature,” but I would also caution those researchers looking for a how-to book for their dissertation or other qualitative research project. This is a book of possibilities of what (auto)ethnographies can be—inspiring authors and fostering creativity, and I am sure a lot of readers will connect with it.

“Miss, This Is A Lot Of Work”: Exploring Part-Time Students Experiences Of Qualitative Research, Therese Ferguson, Tenesha Gordon Nov 2019

“Miss, This Is A Lot Of Work”: Exploring Part-Time Students Experiences Of Qualitative Research, Therese Ferguson, Tenesha Gordon

The Qualitative Report

Qualitative research can be time consuming and intensive as researchers engage in data collection, analysis, and interpretation of rich, detailed, multi-layered, and voluminous data. For Master’s level students struggling to balance full-time work, family, part-time studies, and other obligations, the nature of qualitative research can be overwhelming and discouraging as they learn about and engage in the research process. However, if students’ experiences are rich and meaningful, the time investment can be worthwhile. In this generic qualitative study, Master’s Level Education students’ experiences in an Introduction to Qualitative Research in Education course are explored. Drawing on data from semi-structured one-to-one …

Sustaining Learning About Qualitative Inquiry: A Book Review On The Craft Of Qualitative Research - A Handbook, Umair Majid Sep 2019

Sustaining Learning About Qualitative Inquiry: A Book Review On The Craft Of Qualitative Research - A Handbook, Umair Majid

The Qualitative Report

There are only a handful of articles, books, tools, and resources that are truly accessible to the novice qualitative investigator. The literature contains reams of resources that aid researchers to launch the qualitative learning process. However, there are few opportunities to develop the depth, prowess, and creativity needed to sustain lifelong learning. The Craft of Qualitative Research: A Handbook by Kleinknecht, van den Scott, and Sanders is one resource that assists researchers to achieve this objective. Conceptualized as a “handbook,” this book is meant to be used throughout research projects and professional careers. The practice of qualitative inquiry serves as …

Difficult Questions For Difficult Decisions: A Book Review, Jessica Popham Jul 2019

Difficult Questions For Difficult Decisions: A Book Review, Jessica Popham

The Qualitative Report

Qualitative Researching goes beyond a simple how-to book. While it is “suitable for all levels” and “easy to follow”, Qualitative Researching poses difficult questions to help the researcher become both critical and creative. Jennifer Mason helps the reader gets actively involved in the research process with an “investigative energy” in which she walks the reader through different ideas. A thorough and well thought out book, Qualitative Researching helps those designing a research project build a strong foundation by examining each step of the process through challenging questions.

Clinic Exploration Of Care Processes To Promote Colorectal Cancer Screening In Rural Accountable Care Organization Clinics: A Qualitative Case Study, Sarbinaz Bekmuratova, Jungyoon Kim, Hongmei Wang, Lufei Young, Daniel J. Schober, Li-Wu Chen Jun 2019

Clinic Exploration Of Care Processes To Promote Colorectal Cancer Screening In Rural Accountable Care Organization Clinics: A Qualitative Case Study, Sarbinaz Bekmuratova, Jungyoon Kim, Hongmei Wang, Lufei Young, Daniel J. Schober, Li-Wu Chen

The Qualitative Report

It is essential to have an effective care process to promote colorectal cancer (CRC) screening particularly in rural areas. Primary care health care providers may have a significant impact on improving CRC screening rates among rural residents through systematic screening processes in their clinics. In this qualitative study, we aimed to explore the whole clinic processes of recommending and referring CRC screening in the rural accountable care organization (ACO) primary care clinics. We collected qualitative data through 21 semi-structured in-depth interviews with healthcare providers in rural primary care ACO clinics in Nebraska. We audio recorded and transcribed the interviews and …

“Be Authentic”: Authenticity Norms In German Politics And Self-Idealizations Of Members Of The Bundestag, Alexander Geimer, Steffen Amling Jun 2019

“Be Authentic”: Authenticity Norms In German Politics And Self-Idealizations Of Members Of The Bundestag, Alexander Geimer, Steffen Amling

The Qualitative Report

This contribution goes back to a study of the formative power of identity norms in professional fields of occupation (fine arts and politics). In this article, we focus on the understanding of identity norms that members of the German Bundestag have to meet and/or to cope with. Thus, our research question is which demands professional politicians encounter and which ways of dealing with them are established. Operating at the intersection of governmentality studies, subjectivation analysis and qualitative inquiry, and based on narrative interviews with MPs, this paper demonstrates how in the field of German politics (at federal level) the MPs …

Generalising From Qualitative Research (Gqr): A New Old Approach, John Guenther, Ian Falk May 2019

Generalising From Qualitative Research (Gqr): A New Old Approach, John Guenther, Ian Falk

The Qualitative Report

In this paper, the authors debunk a long-held myth that generalisation is primarily the domain of quantitative research. Based on a review of modern and historical approaches to generalisation, they argue that generalisation from qualitative research (GQR) can be achieved, not through a process of self-justification, but through defensible and rigorous research design and methods. The authors go on to consider examples from their own qualitative research work spanning the last 20 years. From these examples they offer mechanisms that qualitative researchers can employ to generalise from their findings. They suggest that generalisation is achieved through a process of generalisation …

Technology Ethics In Qualitative Research: How To Be, António Pedro Costa, António Moreira Apr 2019

Technology Ethics In Qualitative Research: How To Be, António Pedro Costa, António Moreira

The Qualitative Report

This introductory note stems from the organization of a special edition of articles from the World Conference on Qualitative Research. Some researchers put forth criticisms about using software in qualitative data analysis, such as losing control in the coding process and leading researchers to use a particular method of analysis according to tool characteristics. Moreover, a number of the scientists believe that the advantages of using specific tools in data analysis are numerous, such as the analysis of an enormous amounts of data, but doing research involves personal or institutional aspects that enter the field of ethics. In the case …

“Listen To Your Gut”: A Reflexive Approach To Data Analysis, Nicole Brown Apr 2019

“Listen To Your Gut”: A Reflexive Approach To Data Analysis, Nicole Brown

The Qualitative Report

Over the last two decades qualitative research has seen significant shifts towards the narrative, reflexive and creative. And yet, analytical frameworks do not seem to have stayed abreast of these developments. Using research into the construction of identity under the influence of fibromyalgia as an example, this paper seeks to exemplify a reflexive approach to data analysis that accounts for the researcher’s positionality as well as the increasingly untraditional, unconventional data stemming from creative data collection methods. The paper provides insight into data analysis and reflexivity and offers two practical examples of reflexive data analysis—an illustrated poem and an installation. …

A Qualitative Metasynthesis Of Published Research Exploring The Pregnancy And Resettlement Experience Among Refugee Women, Diana M. Kingsbury, Sheryl L. Chatfield

The Qualitative Report

The number of refugees and asylum seekers throughout the world continues to increase, leading to increasing challenges in meeting healthcare needs of these individuals. Women’s antenatal health is of particular concern due to their vulnerability to sexual violence and the substantial proportion of refugees consisting of women and girls of or nearing reproductive age. The purpose of this qualitative metasynthesis was to integrate and interpret findings from previously published research reports in which authors explored aspects of pregnancy among resettled refugee women. Following a systematic search process, we used Dedoose qualitative data analysis software to manage the process of extracting …

Validity In Qualitative Research: A Processual Approach, Paulo Hayashi Jr, Gustavo Abib, Norberto Hoppen Jan 2019

Validity In Qualitative Research: A Processual Approach, Paulo Hayashi Jr, Gustavo Abib, Norberto Hoppen

The Qualitative Report

Validity and reliability of research and its results are important elements to provide evidence of the quality of research in the organizational field. However, validity is better evidenced in quantitative studies than in qualitative research studies. As there is diversity within qualitative research methods and techniques, there is no universally accepted criteria to assess validity in qualitative studies; its usefulness is also questioned. Therefore, in this paper, we argue that qualitative research should adopt a processual view approach of validity since it should not be the product of a single test or just one step in the research. Processual validity …
