Nothing "Colonial" About It: Service Delivery And Accountability, Todd Landman
Nothing "Colonial" About It: Service Delivery And Accountability, Todd Landman
Human Rights & Human Welfare
At one level, there is little in “The New Colonialists” with which I disagree. The necessary state capacity in developing societies for basic service delivery is in many cases absent, significantly weak, or has been corrupted in ways that produce tremendous inequality of access and disproportionate social outcomes that are related to race, ethnicity, poverty, gender, and other categories of social identity. It is true that in the presence of weak state institutions, widespread corruption, and underdeveloped infrastructure, a large number of national and international non-governmental agencies and organizations have sought to redress such imbalances through their work in providing …

Human Rights & Human Welfare
During the nineteenth century, European powers extended and deepened their brutal domination of the so-called “uncivilized” (sic) nations and peoples around the world. These efforts were named “colonialist” and were based on the uprooting of indigenous peoples, the export and pillage of natural resources, cultural displacement, direct political control, and economic exploitation and the creation of dependency by the Europeans. While the European states gained colossal economic benefits from these arrangements, the colonized peoples were left with failed states and bad governments. Advocates of these colonialist policies often justified these actions on the basis of a deep-felt ideological belief in …
Cosmopolitanism And Rationalizing Tendencies, James Pattison
Cosmopolitanism And Rationalizing Tendencies, James Pattison
Human Rights & Human Welfare
When phone-in talk shows, the press, and undergraduates debate the case for cosmopolitan accounts of global distributive justice, there are a number of standard rationalizations given for why we don’t have a duty to help. These include: “we have duties only to our fellow countrymen”; “poverty is caused by corrupt leaders, so not our fault, and therefore not our responsibility“; and “humanitarian aid is counter-productive.” Unlike the other two sorts of rationalization, the latter claim does not necessarily deny the moral cosmopolitanism premise that we have extensive duties to relieve the suffering of those beyond our borders. Rather, it follows …

In With The Old, Out With The New, Brent J. Steele
Human Rights & Human Welfare
Michael Cohen, Maria Figueroa Küpçü and Parag Khanna make some compelling arguments about the inherent drawbacks regarding the role diverse networks of NGOs play in keeping at-risk populations alive throughout the world. We are informed that these groups are “the new colonialists,” agencies much like the old European empires. These new colonialists are apparently enforcing a cycle of dependency which prevents the development of state structures, structures that apparently sustain these populations more effectively. The problem with this thesis is that the authors do not seem to entertain the possibility that the nation-state is itself an (old) colonial construct, and …

Dmitri Shalin Interview With Gary T. Marx About Erving Goffman Entitled "Marx-Shalin Exchange On The Goffman Project", Gary T. Marx, Dmitri N. Shalin
Bios Sociologicus: The Erving Goffman Archives
The following email exchange between Dmitri Shalin and Gary T. Marx, Professor Emeritus of sociology, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, took place between August 27, 2008, and October 16, 2008. The exchange was occasioned by Shalin’s paper “Goffman’s Biography and Interaction Order: A Study in Biocritical Hermeneutics.” The original text is in black, Marx’s comments are marked red, and Shalin’s response is in blue.

Goffman’S Biography And The Interaction Order: A Study In Biocritical Hermeneutics, Dmitri N. Shalin
Bios Sociologicus: The Erving Goffman Archives
This paper examines the interfaces between Erving Goffman’s biography and theory. It rests on the premise that Goffman’s Behavior in Public Places can be profitably explored in light of Goffman’s behavior in public places, and vice versa. The tentative conclusion I have reached after examining available biographical accounts is that Goffman was a student of civility whose standards he flouted, that his demeanor was sometimes intentionally demeaning, his deference willfully deferred, and his incivility painfully obvious to those present. The argument is made that Goffman’s infringements on the interaction order were strategic, systematic, theoretically significant, and worthy of close study …

Finally Heard: A Rhetorical Look At The 1971 Pharr Riot, Christina Garza
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
This article attempts to view the 1971 Pharr riot through a rhetorical lens in an effort to understand the social roles that Mexican-Americans took throughout the city's history. Using David Zarefsky's essay, "Four Senses of Rhetorical History," and his concepts of rhetorical history, this article will examine the history of Pharr and attempt to understand the role that the Mexican-American population played in the city's inception. It will attempt to interpret the oral history of those that lived through the riot, understand what it reveals about Pharr and its inhabitants, rhetorically analyze the press and what was being written in …

Where Was The Government? In Inquiry Into The Events Of September 11, 2001, Elizabeth A. Bradshaw
Masters Theses
The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 have forever changed the geopolitical landscape. Yet despite the significance of such an event, those working in the field of state crime have been reluctant to investigate the role of the United States government in failing to prevent the attacks. Utilizing the five criteria of state crime put forth by Kauzlarich, Mullins and Matthews (2003), the actions and inactions of the National Security Council, the Central Intelligence Agency, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the North American Aerospace Defense Command and the Federal Aviation Administration are examined. Drawing on the testimonies of government officials …

Civil Society: Agent Of Change In Egypt, Ola Kubbara
Civil Society: Agent Of Change In Egypt, Ola Kubbara
Archived Theses and Dissertations
Egypt has been dominated by an authoritarian regime for decades now, which ensured its ultimate monopoly over power and government, as well as over civil society. Civil society in Egypt is a very important factor that determines the development of the process of democratization, as well as the political and social stability of the state. The role of civil society, the degree of its autonomy or its repression, reflects on all aspects of political, social and economic spheres. The lagging democracy and the augmented level of social repression and stagnation in Egypt, is due to the weakness of civil society. …

“María Y Revolución, Eso Es Lo Que Ocupa Mi Corazón”: Love And Liberation In The Prison Writings Of Ricardo Flores Magón, Alejandro Wolbert Pérez
NACCS Annual Conference Proceedings
Abstract:
Over a century ago Ricardo and Enrique Flores Magón spoke out against the injustices of Porfirio Díaz’ regime through their writings in the leftist paper Regeneración and their work organizing under the banner of the Partido Liberal Mexicano (PLM); first in Mexico, and later while exiled in the United States, where Ricardo was repeatedly imprisoned for his attempts to ferment revolution. Documented in published essays in Partido papers, magonista ideology, anarchist and internationalist in nature, explicitly critiqued capitalism and the limitations of the nation-state in early 20th century Mexico. Just as important as these printed works for public dissemination, …

Skinner’s depiction of modern day slavery is graphic and challenging. Anyone viewing prohibitions on slavery, or abolition, as historical anachronism, or requiring reinterpretation for modern-day practices, must think again. Skinner persuades us that slavery in its most old fashioned sense is alive and well and, worse than that–on the rise.

The purpose of my research was to test the hypothesis that sports can be a preventative method for youth risk behaviors such as gang membership. My hypothesis was that sports could provide some of the same benefits as gang membership and other risk behaviors, but in a more healthy and productive way. To test this thesis, I spent three weeks researching the work of ARCA, the Associaçao Recreativa e Esportiva para Crianças e Adolescentes in Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. While I studied all the projects of ARCA, I focused my research on their Escola do Surf, in the poor beach community …
