Personal identity is often dictated by the social roles a person fulfills (e.g., mother, son, partner, employee, etc.) and these social roles are defined by the greater family unit and surrounding social environments. Monumental events, such as death, often change a person’s social roles and demand a reorganization of the family unit. To provide comprehensive end-of-life care, human services professionals become an integral piece of care provisions as they are trained in serving the mothers, fathers, and children of the world, more so than treating the biological aspects of illness. Internships are known for being a valuable, albeit time consuming, opportunity for students, supervisors, and faculty in many fields. As undergraduate programs consider their current and future internship programs, we suggest the processes an intern takes to secure and complete an internship are key to furthering their learning and increasing their career marketability. In this article, we use scaffolding and self-efficacy theories as the foundation to developing an intentional internship program in the family science field. While there is a great deal of research pertaining to effective foster care reunification strategies and resources, there is a significant gap in the literature surrounding services for families, post-reunification. This is primarily due to a lack of resources for families following reunification and scarce research on the topic. Families who are reunified from foster care are at a critical point in terms of continued family unity, and they need additional support during this time of transition to prevent future reentry into foster care. Family involvement in a child’s education is a complex system that extends beyond the presence of partnerships between families, schools, and the community (Epstein, 2011). By measuring families’ feelings of connectedness and membership to the school community, this study explores families’ motivations for participating in their child’s learning and development at school. Results suggest that a family’s sense of connectedness to their child’s school community may be related to their level of participation. Findings are discussed in terms of implications for educational communities emphasizing the power of families’ community connectedness within the schools and expanding on the ways to enhance …

Teaching About Prejudice With A Bogardus Social Distance Scale Activity: Replication And Extension, Trent W. Maurer, Cassidy Keim

This study presents a three-year replication and extension of Maurer’s (2013) evaluation of a classroom activity to reduce prejudice and discrimination. Students in six sections of an introductory family science course were assigned to one of three conditions and one of two target marginalized groups for a 3x2 design. Results differed significantly from those reported by Maurer (2013), and suggested that all three methods tested were equally effective in reducing prejudice and discrimination and that such changes were lasting. Additionally, a student participant served as a co-inquirer on this project, and her reflections on the process are included.

Being Ghetto: The Hara As Heterotopia In Judeo-Tunisian Literature, Deborah Barnard

The Hara, or ghetto, is a place that distinguishes its inhabitants from other religious and cultural groups, acting as a spatial indicator of their difference. When Foucault’s theory of heterotopia is applied, the Hara becomes a hybrid, a place simultaneously of crisis and of deviation. In Albert Memmi’s La statue de sel, the protagonist experiences the Hara as antagonistic, or as a dystopia. In Nine Moati’s Les belles de Tunis, the protagonist experiences the Hara as a utopia.
