The Experience Of “Bottoming”: Considerations For Identity And Learning, Craig M. Mcgill, Joshua Collins Dec 2014

The Experience Of “Bottoming”: Considerations For Identity And Learning, Craig M. Mcgill, Joshua Collins

South Florida Education Research Conference

Bottoms—Gay men who prefer to be penetrated, sexually—are more stigmatized than other gay men, and may develop and experience identities differently than other gay, bisexual, or heterosexual men. This paper explores intrinsic dispositions and extrinsic motivations that may lead bottoms to perform and embody psychosocial and sexual identities in intimate, interpersonal, and social contexts.

The Women’S Library Moves: Deeds Not Words, Elizabeth Chapman Jun 2014

The Women’S Library Moves: Deeds Not Words, Elizabeth Chapman

Charleston Library Conference

The move of The Women's Library Collection to the Library of the London School of Economics (LSE) has been a long project with a high public profile. Building academic and financial support and withstanding public protest, the collection finally moved in summer 2013. Managing building works, staffing transfers, and more, the project reveals the riches of this UNESCO-listed collection on Women's History which, combined with LSE's existing campaigning collections, makes a rich resource for students, researchers, and the public. The paper sets out some of the lessons learned in such acquisitions and reveals some of the stories in the collection, …

慢性病的檢疫隔離與與道德重整 : 醫療治理、治療公民權與台灣愛滋列管產業 = Hiv Care As Moral Quarantine : Medical Governance, Therapeutic Citizenship And The Making Of The Aids Surveillance Industry In Taiwan, Tao Ming, Hans Huang May 2014

慢性病的檢疫隔離與與道德重整 : 醫療治理、治療公民權與台灣愛滋列管產業 = Hiv Care As Moral Quarantine : Medical Governance, Therapeutic Citizenship And The Making Of The Aids Surveillance Industry In Taiwan, Tao Ming, Hans Huang

《新自由主義下的新道德》研討會 NEO-MORALISM UNDER NEOLIBERALISM INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

One defining character of HIV care in Taiwan is that it’s built as an integral part of the punitive regime of HIV control, a regime buttressed by stigmatizing public health measures such as name-based reporting, quarterly tracking, mandatory testing, and above all, criminalization of HIV transmission. Within this context, transnational technologies of care and prevention have come to be assembled in specific ways. Notably, a new apparatus of the hospital-based HIV case management program was installed in 2005 as the state’s attempt to tighten its control over the drug-using HIV population. With its increasing link to the burgeoning local AIDS …

Long May She Reign: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Gender Expectations In Disney’S Tangled And Disney/Pixar’S Brave, Caitlin J. Saladino Apr 2014

Long May She Reign: A Rhetorical Analysis Of Gender Expectations In Disney’S Tangled And Disney/Pixar’S Brave, Caitlin J. Saladino

Graduate Research Symposium (GCUA) (2010 - 2017)

This project addresses messages about gender expectations in Disney princess narratives. The two films included in my project are Tangled (2010) and Brave (2012), which feature the most recently inducted princesses to the marketed Disney Princess line (Rapunzel and Merida, respectively). Using genre as an organizing principle, I argue that Rapunzel and Merida are different from the past Disney princesses (Snow White, Cinderella, Ariel, Jasmine, etc.) because their narratives reflect new ideas about gender expectations in modern society. The central tension appearing in both films is the opposition between the image of woman as traditional, domestic, and dependent and woman …

Acceptability Of Sexting In Same-Sex Relationships, Carly Shadid, Katherine M. Hertlein, Sarah M. Steelman Apr 2014

Acceptability Of Sexting In Same-Sex Relationships, Carly Shadid, Katherine M. Hertlein, Sarah M. Steelman

Graduate Research Symposium (GCUA) (2010 - 2017)

For individuals who identify as part of the LGB community, the Internet can be seen as a tool to take control of their lives, may promote self-esteem, and foster a sense of belonging. The purpose of the study was to learn about sexting practices on college campuses. It builds on the existing body of knowledge by attending specifically to sexting rather than the previous literature about engagement in sexual behavior online (see, for example, Daneback, Cooper, & Månsson, 2005). Findings indicated that sexting is viewed as more acceptable in same sex relationships as compared to heterosexual relationships.

The Rhetoric Of Gay Christians: Matthew Vines And Reverend Nancy Wilson As Exemplars, Josu Miller Apr 2014

The Rhetoric Of Gay Christians: Matthew Vines And Reverend Nancy Wilson As Exemplars, Josu Miller

Graduate Research Symposium (GCUA) (2010 - 2017)

In the United States, there is a perception that the gay rights debate situates Christians against gay rights advocates. According to this perception, Christians oppose gay rights, because the Bible condemns homosexuality as a sin, and those who support gay rights do so using purely secular arguments. This perception of the gay rights debate is flawed and overly simplistic, because simply not all Christians oppose gay rights. In fact, there are multiple interpretations of biblical texts that support homosexuality and have caused a gay rights debate within the church that is as complex and intricate as gay rights debate outside …

Bullying Of The Lgbtq Community, Bethany R. Green, Alicia A. Mcleod, Ashlynn Kelly

The Research and Scholarship Symposium (2013-2019)

Our group did a literature review and identified that bullying of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Questioning populations occurs worldwide and is becoming a more prominent global issue. Our group researched and identified bullying in the United States of America, South Africa, Uganda, and Russia. We address these specific countries because of the attention that they have recently received in the media in regards to treatment of people who identify as LGBTQ. We examined this topic and, explored the bio-psycho-social effects of LGBTQ bullying and provided different ways that people can address the problem of bullying of the LGBTQ …

Diy Self-Care Tool Wrkshp!, Hieu Tran, Song

Q-Summit Gathering

We are powerful and fierce. We are who we are because we face many obstacles daily. We are who we are because we are resilient. When our daily interactions push us into feeling that we must live in survivor/survival mode, we feel spent and stressed. Keeping care of ourselves keeps us ready to rise above the bull. This workshop will serve as a space for sharing the many ways we remain resilient and will encourage participants to have fun while taping into our collective and individual power(s) of self-preservation. We will focus on naming sustainable self-care practices and building tool …

So Sochi...: Understanding The Complex Landscape Of International Queer Politics And Interventions, Erik Lampmann Mar 2014

So Sochi...: Understanding The Complex Landscape Of International Queer Politics And Interventions, Erik Lampmann

Q-Summit Gathering

The advent of the 2014 Sochi Games generated a flurry of debate among queer folks as to the role of domestic activists in internationals justice movements. We saw some major corporations attacked via boycotts due to their business relationships in Russia; we saw other corporations exalted for their 'social responsibility' in promoting LGBTQ interests. As this movement weighs intervention in Russian LGBTQ politics alongside other travesties- e.g. the state-sanctioned regime of anti-gay violence in Uganda- situating our own actions within an increasingly global landscape becomes increasingly important. I'm interested in pushing participants to think critically about policy or movement interventions …

Queerness And Christianity, Chris Parks Mar 2014

Queerness And Christianity, Chris Parks

Q-Summit Gathering

As the Queer movement progresses within our context, less and less are we bombarded by secular defenses against queerness. Now, the movement is increasingly having to navigate the world of faith and specifically Christianity. This discussion-based workshop will cultivate the tools to effectively and nonviolently navigate such a conversation. We will graze over explanations of the clobber passages, and spend most of our time reclaiming the biblical text and strategies for connecting with someone of a deeply biblical mindset. The hope is that each young adult, no matter where they find themselves on ideas of faith, will be empowered to …

Artist Caucus, Jon Henry, Jasmin Ullah Mar 2014

Artist Caucus, Jon Henry, Jasmin Ullah

Q-Summit Gathering

The caucus will allow artists to express their full potentials in the supportive and creative environment space. Arts have been a prevalent component of queer activism, politics, and identity formation. Queer artists face additional barriers like lack funding, commercialization, censorship, commodification, and oversight within their field and in relationship to others. Creating a meeting space for queer artists will allow for us to develop our own language and further develop our professional relationships and practices; it will further nurture and inspire the study of queer history, theory, criticism, and studio practices. Topics for discussion include history, resource sharing, advocacy, compensation, …

Legitimizing The Other: Are You Gay Enough?, Clara Kerckhove, Hayley Angel Mar 2014

Legitimizing The Other: Are You Gay Enough?, Clara Kerckhove, Hayley Angel

Q-Summit Gathering

Discussion will be focused on understanding how and why society conceptualizes sexual orientation as black-and-white and ultimately fails to recognize asexuality, bisexuality, pansexuality, and even the fluidity of sexuality over a lifetime as legitimate. The discussion will be open to people of all sexualities. However, the focus will be on the erasure of non-gay sexual orientations.
