Tilted: Exploring The Mainstreaming And Diversity Of Modern Drag, Stephen Stanec
Tilted: Exploring The Mainstreaming And Diversity Of Modern Drag, Stephen Stanec
Honors College Theses
The act of presenting oneself to the world around them is a performance. Gender takes a massive part in this “performance” as the “gender roles” that we as humans embody due to preconceived societal constructs shape the world’s perception of us (Butler 92-95). The world’s normality of performing the gender that closely matches one’s sex assignment is not the only option. The long practiced Queer art form of Drag, blurs and changes the lines of gender through performance. This in turn plays with the fluidity in the manmade construct of gender. Drag is a necessary art form within the Queer …

A Gendered Approach To Security And Violence In Refugee Camps, Priya Sakaria
Honors College Theses
The purpose of this research is to explore the connection between the lack of security and increase of gender based violence in refugee camps. Many of these factors are the causes of the others and vice versa as well as have other consequences for refugees. All of these factors contribute to violence against refugees directly and indirectly. Furthermore, my research will illustrate how these factors …

Student-Faculty Research Projects
Violence against any person is unacceptable; however, there seems to be a tacit collusion with perpetrators when the media non-reports or under-reports incidents of violence in which the victims are targeted because of their actual or perceived LGBT identity. One wonders if the political and religious broad brush strokes of a state influence the response of the media within that state. Close examination of this data will determine if there are discrepancies between the two types of states regarding their portrayal of anti-LGBT attacks. How does the governmental bias of a state influence the coverage of these attacks? All states …

Media Literacy And Girl Empowerment: The Midriff, Lolita And The Pseudo Empowered, Amanda Ghosh
Honors College Theses
This thesis explores the cooptation of authentic girl power by mainstream media designed to sell normative sexuality, consumption practices and a pseudo empowered self. It explores the sexualization of girls in the media and girls’ educational and community engagement with media in the context of empowerment. From an expansive feminist and girls’ studies foundation this project seeks to emphasize the importance of media literacy for girls and aims to address the gap in feminist scholarship on media literacy and educational programming for girls’ empowerment. The thesis examines and connects women’s studies literatures, Rosalind Gills’ Midriff Theory and Gigi Durham’s notion …
Indian Businesswomen: Measuring Success, Andrea Carlson
Indian Businesswomen: Measuring Success, Andrea Carlson
Honors College Theses
The status of women in India has improved in recent years, but compared to the decreasing levels of gender disparity in employment throughout parts of the world, limited numbers of women in India find themselves able to access professional business positions. The following research paper explores the status of women in India’s business world and explains how factors of their history, upbringing, and culture influence the success of Indian women. An analysis of Indian history, specific case studies, and a comparison of the inequality in business in the United States and India provide the background for the concluding recommendations regarding …
