As time has gone on, this idea has continued to evolve up until the 1990s when Dave Carnie coined the term ‘Bromance’ in the skateboard magazine, Big Brother. Ironically the term did not become popular until the seventh season of Big Brother, a popular reality television show, when contestants Will Kirby and Mike Malin referred to their relationship as a bromance. Since the Female Athlete Triad was published in 1992, many efforts have been made to alert the athletic community about the relationship which is shared by disordered eating, amenorrhea and osteoporosis. The knowledge of athletes was investigated at three Midwestern universities regarding the female athlete triad. A total of 189 athletes from two Division III institutions and one Division I institution participated. Overall the subjects had normal height, weight, and body mass index. Most athletes knew they were at risk for osteoporosis at their age, however they did not understand the association it had with amenorrhea. At the Division I …

Healing Through Movement: The Benefits Of Belly Dance For Gendered Victimization, Angela Moe

Perceptions of “belly dance” are that it is degrading, exploitive, and incongruous to feminism. Curiously, however, the dance is incredibly popular in various parts of the world, including the United States, as a form of recreation and creative expression. This paper examines the apparent disconnect between public perception and practitioner standpoint. Findings indicate a strong holistic healing component, particularly in terms of gendered interpersonal victimization, where belly dance seems to hold potential for self-exploration and discovery. Grounded historically, culturally and empirically, these findings are discussed in terms of their application to social work practice as it relates to alternative therapies.
