A Queer Vegan Manifesto, Rasmus R. Simonsen May 2015

A Queer Vegan Manifesto, Rasmus R. Simonsen

Rasmus R Simonsen, PhD

What does it mean for a person to declare her or his veganism to the world? How does the transition from one diet to another impact one’s sense of self? Veganism challenges the foundational character of how we “act out” our selves—not least of all in the context of sexuality and gender. In my paper, I am thus interested in the potential of veganism to disrupt the “natural” bond between gender formations and the consumption of animal products, as this relates to social and cultural genealogies. Consequently, I will explore a queer form of veganism that affirms the radical impact …

Women Of African Descent: Persistence In Completing A Doctorate, Vannetta L. Bailey-Iddrisu Dec 2012

Women Of African Descent: Persistence In Completing A Doctorate, Vannetta L. Bailey-Iddrisu

Vannetta L. Bailey-Iddrisu

This study examines the educational persistence of women of African descent (WOAD) in pursuit of a doctorate degree at universities in the southeastern United States. WOAD are women of African ancestry born outside the African continent. These women are heirs to an inner dogged determination and spirit to survive despite all odds (Pulliam, 2003, p. 337).This study used Ellis’s (1997) Three Stages for Graduate Student Development as the conceptual framework to examine the persistent strategies used by these women to persist to the completion of their studies.

Gift Exchanges In Edo Castle, Cecilia S. Seigle Ph.D.

Cecilia S Seigle Ph.D.

The Japanese love of gift-giving was firmly established during the Edo period, specifically under the fifth shogun Tsunayoshi. This study was done as part of inquiry into the institution of Ooku, and I remark on the significance of gift exchanges as substitute social activities for the women of Ooku.

Of Coyotes, Cooperation, And Capital: Social Capital And Women’S Migration At The Margins Of The State, Anna O. Oleary Jan 2012

Of Coyotes, Cooperation, And Capital: Social Capital And Women’S Migration At The Margins Of The State, Anna O. Oleary

Anna Ochoa OLeary

Examined here are some of the tenets of social capital in the context of the migrants’ crossing the U.S.-Mexico border without official authorization. Using this context helps identify how social capital development is weakened by the structural and gendered dimensions of migration, contributing to the rise in undocumented border crosser deaths since 1993.

Mujeres En El Cruce: Entre La Separación Y Reunificación Familiar En Epoca De (In)Seguridad, Anna O. Oleary

Anna Ochoa OLeary

Belly Dancing Mommas: Challenging Cultural Discourses Of Maternity, Angela M. Moe Dec 2010

Belly Dancing Mommas: Challenging Cultural Discourses Of Maternity, Angela M. Moe

Angela M. Moe

I’m waiting backstage. The last minute checks… Shoes? I can’t bend down far enough to reach them. Hip scarf? I can’t reach across far enough across myself to adjust it. Veil? If I turn around to ensure it’s draped correctly, I’ll bump into and move the stage curtains. Warm up hip shimmy? No need. I’m always warm nowadays. My time is close, in more ways than one. The music, and the flutter in my belly, serve as reminders… I’m 26 weeks along and I’m still dancing. I’m proud of myself. I enter the stage feeling voluptuous and ripe...what as odd …

Gay And Lesbian Elders: History, Law, And Identity Politics In The United States, Nancy J. Knauer Dec 2009

Gay And Lesbian Elders: History, Law, And Identity Politics In The United States, Nancy J. Knauer

Nancy J. Knauer

The approximately two million gay and lesbian elders in the United States are an underserved and understudied population. At a time when gay men and lesbians enjoy an unprecedented degree of social acceptance and legal protection, many elders face the daily challenges of aging isolated from family, detached from the larger gay and lesbian community, and ignored by mainstream aging initiatives. Drawing on materials from law, history, and social theory, this book integrates practical proposals for reform with larger issues of sexuality and identity. Beginning with a summary of existing demographic data and offering a historical overview of pre-Stonewall views …

Mujeres En El Cruce: Remapping Border Security Through Migrant Mobility, Anna O. Oleary Jan 2009

Mujeres En El Cruce: Remapping Border Security Through Migrant Mobility, Anna O. Oleary

Anna Ochoa OLeary

In this article I discuss some of the findings of my study of the encounter between female migrants and immigration enforcement authorities along the U.S.-Mexico border. An objective of the research was to ascertain a more accurate picture of women temporarily suspended in the “intersection” of diametrically opposed processes, immigration enforcement and transnational mobility. Of the many issues that have emerged from this research, family separation is most palpable. This suggests a deeply entrenched economic relationship between family separation and measures to better secure the U.S.-Mexico border. Indeed, women’s accounts of crossing into the U.S. without authorization, as one of …

Social Exchange Practices Among Mexican-Origin Women In Nogales, Arizona: Prospects For Education Acquisition, Anna O. Oleary Dec 2005

Social Exchange Practices Among Mexican-Origin Women In Nogales, Arizona: Prospects For Education Acquisition, Anna O. Oleary

Anna Ochoa OLeary

This paper summarizes quantitative and qualitative findings from a 1999 study of Mexican-origin households in Nogales, Arizona. It finds that women’s educational progress is facilitated by social support and, even more important, that a household’s investment in the education of its members is significantly raised with an increase in the education level of the female head of household. It argues that systematic efforts to build on existent cultural frameworks of social support will promote women’s educational progress and help improve educational opportunities for all people of Mexican origin.

Of Information Highways And Toxic Byways: Women And Environmental Protest In A Northern Mexican City, Anna O. Oleary Jan 2002

Of Information Highways And Toxic Byways: Women And Environmental Protest In A Northern Mexican City, Anna O. Oleary

Anna Ochoa OLeary

This case study of community protest in Hermosillo, a Mexican city in the state of Sonora, outlines s a postmodern model of environmental protest as one that primarily carried out by women and social networking. The model of community highlights the use of social networks as a means of politicizing a toxic waste dump eight kilometers outside the city. A feminist perspective reveals a struggle primarily carried out by women and bears out the intersection of gender, environmentalism, and globalization. As familiar spaces of social interaction, social networks provided the cultural platform from which women agitated for the dump’s closure. …

Rights Of Inequality: Rawlsian Justice, Equal Opportunity, And The Status Of The Family, Justin Schwartz Jan 2001

Rights Of Inequality: Rawlsian Justice, Equal Opportunity, And The Status Of The Family, Justin Schwartz

Justin Schwartz

Is the family subject to principles of justice? In A Theory of Justice, John Rawls includes the (monogamous) family along with the market and the government as among the "basic institutions of society" to which principles of justice apply. Justice, he famously insists, is primary in politics as truth is in science: the only excuse for tolerating injustice is that no lesser injustice is possible. The point of the present paper is that Rawls doesn't actually mean this. When it comes to the family, and in particular its impact on fair equal opportunity (the first part of the the Difference …
