Despite recent improvements in the availability of data on same-sex union formation and dissolution, the field remains understudied. Recent findings on the stability of same-sex unions in the United States and in Europe are inconsistent both within and between countries. Using three data sets – How Couples Meet and Stay Together, the Generations and Gender Survey, and the Longitudinal Internet Studies for the Social sciences surveys – event-history analyses are conducted to examine the stability of same-sex unions relative to male-female unions in the United States and continental Europe. My dissertation consists of three essays on the relationship between public policy, women’s education, and birth rates in two very different societies, Iran and the United States. A sharp decline in the Total Fertility Rate (TFR) in Iran over the last three decades has put the country at the risk of an aging population. In the first two chapters, I detail the dimensions of changes in Iran’s TFR, examines some possible determinants, and estimate the impact of the government’s family planning policies on Iranian women’s fertility and marriage. A growing body of research has addressed the relationship between community-level religious environments and important aspects of well-being, such as mortality, crime, and social mobility. This research argues that the prevalence of specific religious traditions shapes these important outcomes through a variety of mechanisms. While there is no shortage of mechanisms proposed by authors - such as local attitudes towards public institutions, gender norms, and social networks - these mechanisms remain themselves untested. Serbia is said to have one of the highest rates of brain drain in the world. For the generation glossed as the “children of the 1990s,” stances toward mobility and migration have shifted along with geopolitics. Nature-based expressive arts therapy promotes the holistic healing and recovery of individuals by interweaving the practices of ecopsychology, ecotherapy, and expressive arts therapy. These interventions have been proven to mediate ranges of symptomologies, such as anxiety disorders and PTSD. Research conducted by the U.S. National Park Services indicates that African- Americans are less likely to have a positive relationship to nature than all other racial groups. The amplification of this report without introspection of its context perpetuates racialized generalizations. There are many debates about the relationship between athletics and academic performance in the American liberal arts system. This study proposes that there is a negative treatment of athletes by other students in the classroom. It also reveals that athletes have lower GPAs than non-athletes. Using a data set collected at Skidmore College in 2006, these questions are analyzed. This study investigates the degree to which athletes perform compared to non-athletes and their treatment by other students. The sample had 361 valid respondents of whom 50 percent were athletes, and 66 percent of the sample were women. The results demonstrate …

Why does the birthrate in China continuously decline? Why are Chinese people unwilling to have children now even after the One-Child Policy has been abandoned? I propose that the government policy was not the single crucial factor affecting the reduction of births in China. Household income, education, and gender also may have played a role. I use the 2015 Chinese General Social Survey to analyze the relationships between these three factors and the ideal number of children. The sample size of this subset is 2,373. This dissertation presents a collection of essays that study ways in which human mobility affects economic development in origin countries. It focuses on Latin America—a region historically connected to episodes of large-scale migration, recipient of significant remittance flows, and victim of sluggish economic growth. The first two chapters examine the effects of return migration from the United States on aggregate economic welfare and non-state violence in communities of origin in Mexico. This paper focuses on the non-traditional Christian worship site of Mountain Cathedrals in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I argue that affectual and emotional responses are elicited from the congregants of Mountain Cathedrals through the process of sacralization. It is shown that Christian worship in a non-traditional outdoor setting affects the ways in which the congregants engage with, participate in, and create sacred space. I survey current literatures of sacred space, the contemporary Christian church, and non-traditional worships spaces. In states with sex offender residency restrictions, sex offenders have been found to cluster in areas that are poorer, less white, and generally less advantaged, but little research has been done on whether these patterns exist without residency restrictions in place (Tewksbury & Mustaine, 2008). All cities and towns in the state of Massachusetts eliminated residency restrictions for sex offenders in 2015 by way of court order. Cooperative housing may be a viable and financially-sound alternative for individuals and families of low to moderate income, as Portland, Maine’s downtown area becomes gentrified raising property values to unaffordable heights. Of the 13,546 family households in Portland, 8.7% earn below $25,000, which for an average family of four $24, 250¹ is considered to be in poverty, and 18.4% earn between $25,000 and $50,000. Meanwhile, 13.2% of the 16, 561 non-family households are below the poverty line, and 27.5% earn between $25,000 and $50,000 (US Census Bureau, 2014).

Child poverty is a determinant of health that can lead to negative health outcomes that affect childhood development, educational achievement, as well as physical and mental health. The purpose of this study was to identify five Maine counties with the highest rates of child poverty according to the national average. In this dissertation, I explore the migration intentions, self-rated physical and mental health, and alcohol use of people living in regions facing environmental stressors. In my first chapter, I examine factors that predict willingness to move away from southeast Louisiana, a region threatened by land loss, hurricanes, and environmental pollution. Specifically, I assess the relationships risk perceptions, place attachment, and fishing employment have with willingness to move. I find that risk perceptions are positively related to willingness to move and that place attachment and fishing employment are negatively related to willingness to move. การศึกษาในครั้งนี้ มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างผู้สูงอายุกับบุตรและภาวะปัญหาทางสุขภาพจิต รวมไปถึงปัจจัยที่มีอิทธิพลต่อภาวะปัญหาทางสุขภาพจิตของผู้สูงอายุในประเทศไทย โดยใช้ข้อมูลชั้นทุติยภูมิจากการสำรวจผู้สูงอายุภายใต้โครงการการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางประชากรและความอยู่ดีมีสุขในบริบทสังคมสูงวัย พ.ศ. 2559 ซึ่งจัดทำโดยวิทยาลัยประชากรศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย และได้กำหนดกลุ่มตัวอย่างเป็นผู้สูงอายุ (60 ปีขึ้นไป) ที่มีบุตรมีชีวิตอย่างน้อย 1 คน จำนวนทั้งสิ้น 4,812 คน สำหรับการศึกษาในครั้งนี้ทำการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลด้วยสถิติเชิงพรรณนาและการวิเคราะห์ถดถอยทวินามลบที่มีผลกระทบจากศูนย์ ผลการศึกษาแสดงให้เห็นว่า มีผู้สูงอายุราวร้อยละ 59.93 ที่รายงานว่าตนมีปัญหาทางสุขภาพจิตอย่างน้อย 1 อาการ ในช่วง 1 เดือนที่ผ่านมา ผู้สูงอายุในกลุ่มนี้มีอาการโดยเฉลี่ยประมาณ 2.04 อาการ ในส่วนของความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างผู้สูงอายุกับบุตร พบว่า ผู้สูงอายุส่วนใหญ่ราวร้อยละ 88.32 มีความสัมพันธ์กับบุตรอยู่ในระดับดี โดยผู้สูงอายุร้อยละ 47.90 มีบุตรที่มีความสัมพันธ์กันดีมาก และร้อยละ 2.58 เท่านั้นที่มีบุตรที่มีความสัมพันธ์กันไม่ดีเลย จากการวิเคราะห์ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างผู้สูงอายุกับบุตรและภาวะปัญหาทางสุขภาพจิต ผลการศึกษา พบว่า ผู้สูงอายุเพศชายที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับบุตรในระดับดี และมีบุตรอย่างน้อย 1 คนที่มีความสัมพันธ์กันในระดับดีมาก มีความสัมพันธ์ในทิศทางตรงกันข้ามกับภาวะปัญหาทางสุขภาพจิต ในทุกแบบจำลอง ในขณะที่ ผู้สูงอายุเพศหญิงที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับบุตรในระดับดี มีความสัมพันธ์ในทิศทางตรงกันข้ามกับภาวะปัญหาทางสุขภาพจิต เฉพาะในแบบจำลองที่ 1 เท่านั้น เมื่อวิเคราะห์ปัจจัยที่มีอิทธิพลต่อภาวะปัญหาทางสุขภาพจิต ภายหลังเพิ่มการควบคุมอิทธิพลของปัจจัยอื่น ๆ พบว่า ปัจจัยด้านสุขภาพ ได้แก่ การประเมินสุขภาพตนเอง และความสามารถในการทำกิจวัตรประจำวันขั้นพื้นฐานและขั้นสูง และปัจจัยการเกื้อหนุนระหว่างรุ่น ได้แก่ รูปแบบการอยู่อาศัย การให้เงินแก่บุตร เป็นปัจจัยที่มีอิทธิพลต่อความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างผู้สูงอายุกับบุตรและภาวะปัญหาทางสุขภาพจิตด้วย นอกจากนี้ยังพบว่า ปัจจัยด้านประชากรและสังคม ได้แก่ อายุ สถานภาพสมรส การศึกษา เขตที่อยู่อาศัย ภูมิภาค ปัจจัยด้านเศรษฐกิจ ได้แก่ ระดับรายได้ ความเพียงพอของรายได้ และปัจจัยด้านการมีส่วนร่วมในกิจกรรมทางสังคม ได้แก่ การเข้าร่วมกิจกรรมทางศาสนา เป็นปัจจัยที่มีอิทธิพลต่อภาวะปัญหาทางสุขภาพจิต อย่างไรก็ดี ความสัมพันธ์ดังกล่าวมีความแตกต่างไปตามเพศของผู้สูงอายุด้วย

การศึกษาครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ 1) รายงานสถานการณ์ของการรายงานภาวะมีบุตรยาก และ 2) ศึกษาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างปัจจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการรายงานภาวะมีบุตรยาก ด้วยปัจจัยทางประชากร ปัจจัยอนามัยเจริญพันธุ์ ปัจจัยทางเศรษฐกิจและสังคม ปัจจัยสุขภาพ และปัจจัยของคู่สมรส ของสตรีวัยเจริญพันธุ์ที่มีสถานภาพกำลังสมรสแต่ยังไม่เคยมีบุตรในประเทศไทย การศึกษาครั้งนี้ใช้ข้อมูลการสำรวจระดับประเทศซึ่งเป็นข้อมูลเชิงปริมาณจากการสำรวจของโครงการการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางประชากรและความอยู่ดีมีสุขในบริบทสังคมสูงวัย ของวิทยาลัยประชากรศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย ซึ่งดำเนินการจัดเก็บข้อมูลในเดือนมิถุนายนถึงกันยายม พ.ศ.2559 มีกลุ่มประชากรตัวอย่างเป็นสตรีวัยเจริญพันธุ์ที่มีอายุระหว่าง 15 ถึง 49 ปี โดยการศึกษาครั้งนี้คัดเลือกเฉพาะสตรีที่มีอายุระหว่าง 25 ถึง 49 ปี มีสถานภาพกำลังสมรสแต่ยังไม่เคยมีบุตร และมีข้อมูลสำหรับการวิเคราะห์ที่สมบูรณ์ทั้งหมด 548 ราย การวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลในการศึกษานี้ใช้การวิเคราะห์ถดถอยโลจิสติกทวิภาค (Binary Logistic Regression Analysis) โดยมีตัวแปรตามเป็นการรายงานภาวะมีบุตรยากของสตรี กำหนดให้ 0 แสดงถึงสตรีที่ไม่มีการรายงานภาวะมีบุตรยาก (กลุ่มอ้างอิง) 1 แสดงถึง สตรีที่รายงานภาวะมีบุตรยาก ผลการศึกษาพบว่า สตรีมากกว่าครึ่ง คิดเป็นร้อยละ 51.5 รายงานภาวะมีบุตรยาก ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่มีอายุระหว่าง 35 ถึง 39 ปี โดยร้อยละ 61 ของสตรีกลุ่มนี้รายงานว่าตนเองมีบุตรยาก ทั้งนี้เมื่อวิเคราะห์ความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างตัวแปรอิสระกับการรายงานภาวะมีบุตรยากพบว่า ปัจจัยทางประชากร ได้แก่ อายุของสตรี จำนวนบุตรที่ปรารถนา ปัจจัยอนามัยเจริญพันธุ์ ได้แก่ การใช้การคุมกำเนิด การแท้ง ปัจจัยทางเศรษฐกิจและสังคม ได้แก่ ระดับการศึกษาสตรี เขตที่อยู่อาศัย มีความสัมพันธ์กับการรายงายภาวะมีบุตรยากของสตรี

This study used in-depth interviews of permanent residents on Grand Isle, Louisiana, a remote barrier island, to better understand their perceptions of structural flood measures, non-structural responses to flooding and hurricanes, and perceptions of vulnerability to flooding, hurricanes, and climate change on a remote barrier island-Grand Isle, Louisiana. Residents' perceptions regarding the various structural measures implemented by the federal, state, and local government appeared mixed. This dissertation applies feminist theory to investigate women’s participation in wildlife-based recreation and how natural resource management organizations conduct stakeholder engagement in a North American context. Gendered social processes, including norms and expectations, as well as gendered cultures, can constrain women’s participation in recreation through social sanctions and disenfranchisement. Gender and leisure scholars have studied these dynamics in sport and leisure contexts, but how individuals negotiate these constraints is understudied in a wildlife-based recreation context. การฝากครรภ์ที่มีคุณภาพส่งผลให้สุขภาพของสตรีตั้งครรภ์และทารกมีความปลอดภัย โดยมีส่วนสำคัญในการลดอัตราการตายของมารดา ตลอดจนส่งเสริมให้ทารกมีน้ำหนักแรกคลอดอยู่ในเกณฑ์มาตรฐาน และมีสุขภาวะที่ดีในตลอดช่วงวัย การศึกษาในครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาปัจจัยที่ส่งอิทธิพลต่อการฝากครรภ์ที่มีคุณภาพ และองค์ประกอบของการฝากครรภ์ที่มีคุณภาพของสตรีตั้งครรภ์ในประเทศไทย ตามกรอบแนวคิดขององค์การอนามัยโลก ซึ่งประกอบด้วย 1) การได้รับการฝากครรภ์เมื่ออายุครรภ์น้อยกว่าหรือเท่ากับ 12 สัปดาห์ 2) การได้รับการฝากครรภ์มากกว่าหรือเท่ากับ 5 ครั้ง และ 3) การได้รับการฝากครรภ์จากแพทย์ หรือพยาบาลวิชาชีพและการผดุงครรภ์ ซึ่งใช้ข้อมูลทุติยภูมิจากโครงการสำรวจสถานการณ์เด็กและสตรีวัยเจริญพันธุ์ในประเทศไทย พ.ศ. 2558-2559 จากสำนักงานสถิติแห่งชาติ โดยกลุ่มตัวอย่างที่ใช้ในการศึกษา คือ สตรีวัยเจริญพันธุ์ที่มีอายุระหว่าง 15-49 ปี ที่คลอดบุตรคนสุดท้องภายใน 2 ปีก่อนการสัมภาษณ์ จำนวนทั้งสิ้น 2,092 คน และทำการวิเคราะห์ด้วยการถดถอยโพรบิท ผลการศึกษาพบว่า อายุขณะตั้งครรภ์บุตร ลำดับของบุตร ความต้องการมีบุตร อัตราส่วนพึ่งพิงทางอายุ เพศของหัวหน้าครัวเรือน ระดับสถานะทางเศรษฐกิจของครัวเรือน ระดับการศึกษา ศานาที่นับถือ การเรียนเรื่องเพศศึกษาในโรงเรียน และพื้นที่อยู่อาศัย ส่งอิทธิพลต่อการได้รับการฝากครรภ์ที่มีคุณภาพ และองค์ประกอบของการฝากครรภ์ที่มีคุณภาพที่แตกต่างกัน ฉะนั้น จึงนำไปสู่แนวทางการสนับสนุนให้สตรีตั้งครรภ์ได้รับการฝากครรภ์ที่มีคุณภาพจากภาครัฐ ผ่านแนวทางการลดความเหลื่อมล้ำทางด้านสาธารณสุขในเชิงพื้นที่ ควบคู่กับการเสริมสร้างความรู้ความเข้าใจที่ตรงจุด
