U.S. incarceration since the 1980s is increasingly concentrated among black men, reinforcing their racial inequality in the labor market. However, less attention has been paid to the fact that the military, which provided employment, income and educational opportunities to black men disproportionately, has downsized at the same time during this same period. Mass incarceration has rarely been studied in relation to military downsizing. The high school student attrition rate in the United States is unexpectedly high. The purpose of this research is to demonstrate a correlation between high school non-completion and criminal arrest rates in order to establish the importance of improving the public school system in the country. I analyze dropout rates, crime rates, and demographic differences through an ecological study of the United States. States with high dropout rates also have high overall arrest rates, families living in poverty, and are more religious. Studies have shown, on a consistent basis, that, while incarcerated, ex-offenders experience lower literacy levels than the general population, suffer emotional and mental distress from a harsh prison life, and suffer from the negative effects of public perception. Ex-offender anger abounds. These factors interfere with an inmate’s ability to communicate effectively. Notwithstanding, upon release from custody, how do we help such ex-offenders communicate? As ethnic diversity increases in the United States, interethnic marriages are becoming increasingly prevalent. Despite their increasing rates, interethnic unions experience lower levels of relationship quality and are at a higher risk of divorce than same-ethnic unions. Other factors that influence marital outcomes include age at marriage, education, religion, and parental divorce. However, factors that influence specifically interethnic marriages include internal stressors, such as conflicting values and relationship expectations, and external stressors, such as a lack of social support and/or legal barriers. The Maine State Housing Authority estimates that 527 of those people were unsheltered or resided in emergency homeless shelters in the City of Portland. Building on research conducted by sociologists on the predictors of abortion attitudes, through a secondary analysis of 2016 General Social Survey (GSS) data, with a total of 1571 respondents, I investigate the relationship between demographic identifiers, specifically age, sex, and religious fundamentalism, and approval rates of legal abortion. Using the age variable in GSS and drawing from Generational Cohort Theory, I isolate the generational cohorts baby boomers and millennials and hypothesize that baby boomers will approve of legal abortion in fewer instances than millennials. How does context influence health? County racial composition and racial residential segregation shape health outcomes by creating different contexts that influence access to health-related resources. White Americans disproportionately possess these material and intangible resources. Therefore, I propose that the higher the percent of non-Hispanic white residents in U.S. counties, and the higher the racial residential segregation in U.S. counties, the lower the percent of adult residents who report poor or fair health in U.S. counties. To explore these hypotheses, I analyze 2014 demographic and survey data from 2946 U.S. counties. Findings provide mixed support for my hypotheses. Percent white has …

The main narratives of Appalachia form a dichotomous view of the land and its people: beautiful landscapes threatened by resource extraction and a people wrecked by the symptoms of longterm poverty and economic stagnation. Vietnam, like many developing countries, is undergoing a rapid pace of population ageing but within a resource limited context. Therefore, understanding the factors that are important to later life well-being has become a key policy issue. Using data from the 2011 Vietnam National Aging Survey, this thesis aims to investigate gender differences in the direct and indirect impacts of education on subjective well-being of older Vietnamese based on four domains: happiness, life satisfaction, loneliness, and depression (N=2,789, including 1,683 females and 1,106 males). การวิจัยในครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อศึกษาสถานการณ์การเข้ารับการรักษาการมีบุตรยาก ความเหลื่อมล้ำในการเข้ารับการรักษาระหว่างกรุงเทพมหานครและภาคอื่นๆ และปัจจัยที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับการเข้ารับการรักษาการมีบุตรยาก กลุ่มตัวอย่าง คือ สตรีวัยเจริญพันธุ์อายุ 25-44 ปี สมรสเมื่ออายุ 20 ปีขึ้นไป สมรสมาแล้วอย่างน้อย 1 ปี ไม่เคยมีบุตรและมีความต้องการมีบุตร มีเพศสัมพันธ์กับคู่สมรสอย่างสม่ำเสมอ (4-6 ครั้งต่อสัปดาห์) ไม่คุมกำเนิดในระยะ 1 ปีขึ้นไป โดยใช้ข้อมูลจากการสำรวจอนามัยเจริญพันธุ์พ.ศ. 2552 ขนาดตัวอย่าง 278 ราย และข้อมูลจากการสำรวจการเปลี่ยนแปลงทางประชากรและความอยู่ดีมีสุขในบริบทสังคมสูงวัย พ.ศ. 2559 ขนาดตัวอย่าง 130 ราย สำหรับการวิเคราะห์เชิงปริมาณ นอกจากนี้ยังมีการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกกลุ่มตัวอย่างที่มีลักษณะเดียวกันอีก 28 ราย สำหรับการวิเคราะห์เชิงคุณภาพ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า สตรีที่มีบุตรยากส่วนใหญ่ไม่เข้ารับการรักษาและมีแนวโน้มที่จะไม่เข้ารับการรักษาสูงขึ้น จากร้อยละ 55.9 ในพ.ศ. 2552 เพิ่มเป็นร้อยละ 65.5 ในพ.ศ. 2559 และพบว่า ในปี พ.ศ. 2552 พบความเหลื่อมล้ำในการเข้ารับการรักษาระหว่างกรุงเทพมหานครและภาคอื่นๆ ในขณะที่พ.ศ. 2559 ไม่พบความเหลื่อมล้ำ อย่างไรก็ตามพบว่าในปีพ.ศ. 2552 สตรีที่มีอายุแรกสมรส จำนวนปีที่สมรส จำนวนบุตรที่ต้องการ การวางแผนครอบครัว ระดับการศึกษา การทำงาน และการครอบครองที่อยู่อาศัยที่ต่างกันจะเข้ารับการรักษาแตกต่างกันระหว่างกรุงเทพมหานครและภาคอื่นๆ ในขณะที่ ในปี พ.ศ. 2559 พบว่า สตรีที่มีอายุแรกสมรสแตกต่างกันเท่านั้น ที่จะเข้ารับการรักษาต่างกันระหว่างกรุงเทพมหานครและภาคอื่นๆและเมื่อพิจารณาปัจจัยที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับการเข้ารับการรักษา พบว่า ในปี พ.ศ. 2552 ปัจจัยด้านอายุแรกสมรส จำนวนปีที่สมรส ภาค ระดับการศึกษา การทำงาน และการครอบครองที่อยู่อาศัย มีความสัมพันธ์กับการตัดสินใจเข้ารับการรักษาการมีบุตรยาก ที่ระดับนัยสำคัญ 0.05 ในขณะที่ในปี พ.ศ. 2559 พบว่า จำนวนปีที่สมรส และการวางแผนครอบครัวเท่านั้นที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับการเข้ารับการรักษาการมีบุตรยาก ที่ระดับนัยสำคัญ 0.05 ผลการวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ พบว่า สตรีที่มีบุตรยากที่เข้ารับการรักษาจะให้ความสำคัญกับการวางแผนครอบครัว และจำนวนปีที่สมรส ในขณะที่ กลุ่มที่ไม่เข้ารับการรักษาจะเห็นคุณค่าการมีบุตรแต่ไม่เห็นความสำคัญของวางแผนครอบครัว อายุแรกสมรส …

ค่าจ้างและความต้องการทำงานเพิ่มของแรงงานนอกระบบ: กรณีศึกษาในประเทศไทย, ผกามาศ เลียงธนะฤกษ์

ด้วยเหตุที่ประเทศไทยเข้าสู่สังคมสูงวัยที่แรงงานมีแนวโน้มลดลง การหาแรงงานมาทดแทนในตลาดแรงงานจึงเป็นประเด็นที่ควรศึกษา เนื่องจากแรงงานที่ต้องการจะทำงานเพิ่มกว่าร้อยละ 80 เป็นแรงงานนอกระบบ การศึกษาครั้งนี้จึงสนใจศึกษาปัจจัยที่ส่งอิทธิพลต่อความต้องการจะทำงานเพิ่มของแรงงานนอกระบบ โดยเฉพาะค่าจ้าง ทั้งระดับค่าจ้าง และประเภทค่าจ้างที่ได้รับ (รายเดือน/ไม่ใช่รายเดือน) รวมถึงปัจจัยอื่นๆ ทางประชากร เศรษฐกิจ และสังคม โดยใช้ข้อมูลการสำรวจแรงงานนอกระบบ พ.ศ.2560 สำรวจโดยสำนักงานสถิติแห่งชาติ ซึ่งมีกลุ่มตัวอย่าง คือ แรงงานนอกระบบที่เป็นลูกจ้าง และวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยใช้ Multiple linear regression และ Tobit Model ผลการศึกษา พบว่า ค่าจ้างเป็นปัจจัยหลักที่ส่งอิทธิพลต่อความต้องการจะทำงานเพิ่ม ผู้ที่มีรายได้จากค่าจ้างเมื่อเทียบกับผู้อื่นน้อยกว่า 1,000 บาทต่อเดือน มีความต้องการจะทำงานเพิ่มมากกว่า 4.9 ชั่วโมงต่อสัปดาห์ ซึ่งเป็นไปตามทฤษฎีการโค้งกลับของเส้นอุปทานแรงงาน และผู้ที่ได้รับค่าจ้างประเภทรายชั่วโมง และผู้ที่ได้รับค่าจ้างประเภทรายวันหรือรายสัปดาห์จะมีความต้องการทำงานเพิ่มมากกว่าผู้ที่ได้รับค่าจ้างประเภทรายเดือน 57.1 ชั่วโมงต่อสัปดาห์ และ 26.7 ชั่วโมงต่อสัปดาห์ตามลำดับ ข้อค้นพบนี้ของแรงงานนอกระบบของไทยสอดคล้องกับแนวคิดตามทฤษฎี Instant Gratification ที่ยิ่งระยะเวลาในการรอผลตอบแทนยิ่งน้อยความต้องการจะทำงานเพิ่มยิ่งสูงมากขึ้นมาก และหากศึกษาเฉพาะกลุ่มลูกจ้างที่ได้รับค่าจ้างแบบไม่ใช่รายเดือน พบว่า ผู้ที่ได้รับค่าจ้างแบบไม่ใช่รายเดือนและมีทักษะแรงงานในระดับสูงมีความต้องการจะทำงานเพิ่มมากกว่าผู้ที่มีทักษะต่ำ 30.2 ชั่วโมงต่อสัปดาห์

การวิจัยในครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาอิทธิพลของความรักความเข้าใจในครอบครัวที่เกิดขึ้นระหว่างเด็กและเยาวชนกับครอบครัวของตนต่อคุณธรรมจริยธรรมของเด็กและเยาวชน โดยศึกษาสถานการณ์ความรักความเข้าใจในครอบครัวและปัจจัยที่เกี่ยวข้อง รวมทั้งศึกษาวิธีการและแนวทางการเลี้ยงดูลูกของพ่อแม่ผู้ปกครอง แบบแผนการวิจัยเป็นแบบผสมผสานระหว่างการวิจัยเชิงปริมาณและเชิงคุณภาพ โดยข้อมูลเชิงปริมาณที่ใช้นำมาจากข้อมูลทุติยภูมิจากโครงการสำรวจสถานการณ์เด็กและเยาวชนไทย พ.ศ.2558: ตามกรอบคุณลักษณะที่พึงประสงค์ ที่ได้รับการอนุเคราะห์จากวิทยาลัยประชากรศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย และวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลรวมถึงเปรียบเทียบผลการศึกษาด้วยสถิติการถดถอยพหุคูณ ในขณะที่การวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพใช้วิธีการสัมภาษณ์เชิงลึกเพื่อให้ทราบมุมมองและแนวทางการเลี้ยงดูลูกของพ่อแม่ที่เกี่ยวข้องกับคุณธรรมจริยธรรมของเด็กและเยาวชน ผลการศึกษาพบว่า ความรักความเข้าใจในครอบครัวมีอิทธิพลต่อคุณธรรมจริยธรรมของเด็กเป็นอย่างมากและเป็นไปในทางบวก โดยหากเด็กและเยาวชนได้รับความรักความเข้าใจในครอบครัวมากจะมีความสัมพันธ์ต่อคุณธรรมจริยธรรมส่วนตนให้เป็นไปในทางบวกเช่นกัน นอกจากนี้ปัจจัยลักษณะประชากรของเด็กและเยาวชนบางประการมีอิทธิพลต่อคุณธรรมจริยธรรมของเด็กเช่นกัน ประกอบด้วย ภาคที่อยู่อาศัย เพศ อายุ และการศึกษา ในขณะที่มีปัจจัยลักษณะครัวเรือนเพียงบางประการเท่านั้นที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับคุณธรรมจริยธรรม และปัจจัยลักษณะผู้ปกครองเป็นเพียงปัจจัยเดียวที่ไม่มีความสัมพันธ์กับคุณธรรมจริยธรรม นอกจากนี้ผลการศึกษาเชิงคุณภาพพบว่า พ่อแม่เลี้ยงดูลูกด้วยความเอาใจใส่และพร้อมที่จะให้ความรักความเข้าใจแก่ลูกอยู่เสมอ อีกทั้งยังตระหนักและมุ่งเน้นที่จะปลูกฝังคุณธรรมจริยธรรมพื้นฐานแก่ลูกของตนโดยคุณธรรมหลักที่เน้นปลูกฝังได้แก่ ความซื่อสัตย์และรับผิดชอบต่อหน้าที่โดยมุ่งหวังให้ลูกเป็นคนดีของครอบครัวและสังคม การศึกษาครั้งนี้สามารถนำไปเป็นแนวทางในการวางแผนและจัดทำยุทธศาสตร์ในการพัฒนาครอบครัวอย่างถูกวิธี เพื่อส่งเสริมการให้ความรักความเข้าใจในครอบครัวอันจะช่วยเสริมสร้างผลผลิตหรือเด็กและเยาวชนที่มีคุณธรรมจริยธรรมอันเป็นสมาชิกของสังคมที่มีคุณภาพ

Health disparities in relation to socioeconomic status are persistent and pervasive in the United States. My dissertation investigates the intergenerational determinants of child wellbeing. Driven by several life course models as well as the cumulative (dis)advantage theory, this dissertation examines whether and how grandparental socioeconomic status (SES) shapes the health and cognitive skills of their grandchildren, paying special attention to identifying direct and indirect processes, and assesses the heterogeneous effects by child race. This dissertation examines topics related to racial and ethnic diversity through three essays. Each essay takes a new perspective on a current issue in the literature and utilizes a unique statistical methodology to address that issue. The first essay uses the Monte Carlo Simulation Method to develop a measure of segregation for the ACS and uses it to assess whether the ACS is useful for measuring segregation in places with different sizes. The second essay considers whether a relatively unexplored factor, genetics, is correlated with migration.
