Appalachia and those living within the region have been discussed, examined, critiqued, and defined primarily by those living outside of the area, particularly following the 2016 Election. The main narratives of Appalachia form a dichotomous view of the land and its people: beautiful landscapes threatened by resource extraction and a people wrecked by the symptoms of longterm poverty and economic stagnation. Simultaneously, the Appalachian identity has been constructed around a rugged or blue-collar male identity that excludes and makes invisible the female experience. Brain drain, also known as “human capital flight,” can be defined as “the mass emigration of technically skilled people from one country to another country” (Weeks, 2008, p. 250) or one state to another state. This theory surmises that highly skilled people or those with high education levels are more likely to migrate from places with little to no economic opportunities to places with better economic and job opportunities. The high rate of attrition for beginning teachers has been blamed on many factors. Nationally these include low pay, urban versus rural school settings, age, with younger teachers leaving sooner, and other variables making a complex problem with no clear component responsible for the loss of teachers. This study examined the self reported variables that contribute to high school teachers in West Virginia leaving their profession. An electronic survey instrument was distributed to current secondary teachers across the state. The purpose of this study was to examine legislative and societal developments in the United States in relation to changes in educational administration and determine the existence of bifurcation points of change. The effects of legislative and societal changes on the tasks on which administrators focus their time were evaluated. The administrators were surveyed to determine if changes in time on task have occurred to meet the demands of current legislative priorities and if any demographic relationships existed. This research is a step toward understanding the nature of the relationship between population movement and the level of modernization in Indonesia as that country continues with its development program all across the provinces. From the Intercensal Population Survey 1995, migration and seven modernization indicators of the 27 provinces were explored. The results of the findings indicated there was a correlation between modernization and migration although the outcomes vary from one variable to another. This work describes the use of three sources of data, cemetery inscriptions, vital registrations of births and deaths, and the manuscript census rolls. Consequently, it emphasizes the technique and methodology of the investigation. While the primary purpose of the study was to discover the uses and limitations of the material, observations about the sample never the less derive from the data, for the tools of historical demography can provide information about the population that becomes almost biographical in nature.
