Science, Technology, Engineering, And Mathematics (Stem) Project-Based Learning (Pbl) Education: A New Mexico Case Study For Equity And Inclusion, Kimberly A. Scheerer
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
This research addresses how student participation in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) project-based learning (PBL) education activities encourages underrepresented minority student achievement in STEM career field trajectories. Seven New Mexico high school counselors and 12 STEM organization personnel were interviewed during this study. Their responses represent the nuanced professional voices where New Mexico public education intersects with STEM student interest and cultural influence.
For students, STEM PBL can foster deep integration across educational disciplines and enhance STEM career trajectory interest and readiness. STEM education converged with PBL methodologies has the ability to leverage community support while broadening student networks. …
Three Essays On Responsibility And The Transition To Adulthood In Comparative Perspective, Andrew Lee Breidenbach
Three Essays On Responsibility And The Transition To Adulthood In Comparative Perspective, Andrew Lee Breidenbach
Sociology ETDs
This hybrid dissertation examines three related topics on the concept of responsibility regarding adulthood and transitioning into this status: a) youth conceptions of responsibility for delayed home-leaving, b) the relationship between family responsibility and transition timing, and c) global conceptions of parental responsibilities to children. First, I find that youth typically see external, structural causes preventing earlier home-leaving over internal, more culturally-motivated causes leading individuals to prefer staying at home longer. Second, I find that total housework and specifically the “female-typical” interior work of cooking, cleaning and caring speeds up parenthood while delaying the achievement transitions of finishing school and …
Migration, Return Migration, And Economic Development In Latin America, Jose R. Bucheli
Migration, Return Migration, And Economic Development In Latin America, Jose R. Bucheli
Economics ETDs
This dissertation presents a collection of essays that study ways in which human mobility affects economic development in origin countries. It focuses on Latin America—a region historically connected to episodes of large-scale migration, recipient of significant remittance flows, and victim of sluggish economic growth. The first two chapters examine the effects of return migration from the United States on aggregate economic welfare and non-state violence in communities of origin in Mexico. The analysis is motivated by the historic reversal in the Mexico-U.S. migration flows in the early 2000s. The third chapter analyzes the interaction between remittances, migration, and secondary school …
Engaging Sacred Space And Experiencing God In The Mountains: A Study Of The Non-Traditional Worship Environment Of Mountain Cathedrals, An Ecumenical Meetup Group Based In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Brendan Isaiah Nixon
Engaging Sacred Space And Experiencing God In The Mountains: A Study Of The Non-Traditional Worship Environment Of Mountain Cathedrals, An Ecumenical Meetup Group Based In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Brendan Isaiah Nixon
Geography ETDs
This paper focuses on the non-traditional Christian worship site of Mountain Cathedrals in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I argue that affectual and emotional responses are elicited from the congregants of Mountain Cathedrals through the process of sacralization. It is shown that Christian worship in a non-traditional outdoor setting affects the ways in which the congregants engage with, participate in, and create sacred space. I survey current literatures of sacred space, the contemporary Christian church, and non-traditional worships spaces. Using the literature as a backdrop, I utilize Mountain Cathedrals as a case study for understanding the ways in which sacred space is …
Cultural And Social Problems Of An Indian Pueblo, Thomas P. Lief
Cultural And Social Problems Of An Indian Pueblo, Thomas P. Lief
Sociology ETDs
This study describes the impact of social change upon the social structure of an Indian pueblo community in New Mexico. It is an investigation of the variant social forces and their conflicting impingements. Given a certain culture heritage, a particular historical background and a specific physical and social setting, what are the results of change upon the social system and upon the individual? To fit this inquiry into the empirical realm of facts, the community of San Juan pueblo was chosen, not so much because of its unique cultural configuration, as for the fact that it offered an opportune area …
Culture Change As Revealed By A Study Of Relief Clients Of A Suburban New Mexico Community, Gideon Sjoberg
Culture Change As Revealed By A Study Of Relief Clients Of A Suburban New Mexico Community, Gideon Sjoberg
Sociology ETDs
It is the Spanish-American family that this study will attempt to analyze. What changes has the family undergone in New Mexico? What changes have taken place in such phases of family life as mobility, parent-child relationships, adoption practices, family reciprocity, and home ownership?
In order to study this institution, the relief clients of San José, a small Spanish-American suburb of Albuquerque, New Mexico, were chosen as the field for investigation. Case records of the New Mexico Department of Welfare serve as the basis for analysis. Therefore, by way of summary, the problem might be stated as follows: What changes in …
