Social Policy, Imperiled Communities, And Hiv/Aids Transmission In Prisons: A Call For Zero Tolerance, Louis F. Graham, Henrie Treadwell, Kisha Braithwaite

HIV/AIDS and African-American male imprisonment contribute to the destruction of African-American communities. African-American men and HIV/AIDS are disproportionately represented throughout all sectors of the criminal justice industry, including the juvenile justice system. The criminal justice system contributes to unacceptably high African-American male imprisonment rates and HIV prevalence directly via the ‘war on drugs’ and lax enforcement of institutional policy among other things, and indirectly through perpetuation of economic hardship which further exacerbates imprisonment rates, thus closing the loop of a vicious cycle of revolving prison doors and HIV contraction. Illegal Dumping: Large And Small Scale Littering In Rural Kentucky, Kenneth D. Tunnell

Illegal dumping, a social problem greatly affecting some rural states, occurs at both the large and small scale as open dump sites and roadside trash. Focusing on Kentucky, a rural state without mandatory trash pickup and a per capita income below and a poverty rate above the national average, this photo essay describes the dumping and littering problem. As is shown, legislative and executive initiatives have made some inroads in large-scale clean up. Some local governments, however, appear apathetic about addressing illegal dumping in their own communities. Institutions, Anomie, And Violent Crime: Clarifying And Elaborating Institutional-Anomie Theory, Richard Rosenfeld, Steven F. Messner

A limited but accumulating body of research and theoretical commentary offers support for core claims of the “institutional-anomie theory” of crime (IAT) and points to areas needing further development. In this paper, which focuses on violent crime, we clarify the concept of social institutions, elaborate the cultural component of IAT, derive implications for individual behavior, summarize empirical applications, and propose directions for future research. Drawing on Talcott Parsons, we distinguish the “subjective” and “objective” dimensions of institutional dynamics and discuss their interrelationship. Piracy On The High Speeds: A Test Of Social Learning Theory On Digital Piracy Among College Students, Whitney Decamp

This study assesses factors that affect Internet piracy among college students. Specifically, the study asks the question: Are social learning theories predictive of piracy behaviors? Data used in this study were collected from 587 undergraduate college students enrolled in two higher education institutions. Path analysis as part of structural equation modeling (SEM) is used to test several models for different types of Internet piracy. The results show that variables from social learning theories, such as peer involvement and parental support, are strongly related to Internet piracy.
