Youth voice is often excluded from important community conversations regarding social issues. Most individuals do not know how to engage in such complex topics with youth and often find themselves silencing youth or staying silent themselves when it comes up in discussions. This project was created in an effort to determine if art can be used as an effective mechanism for engaging youth in these critical conversations. A month-long program was created and implemented with eleven youth members and culminated in a final showcase where the youth shared their perceptions on racism with community members. Kiskeya Reimagined brings together Dominican and Haitian communities to watch a film documentary on specific causes to the historic conflict between the two societies; allowing for community reflections and expert panel discussions. The research uses conflict theory to describe the opposition between Dominicans and Haitians as a problem between class systems and colonial powers using their capital and racism as a tool to change the history of the island and manipulate the general population. The activities in which children and youth engage while outside of school hours are critical to their development, highlighting the need for quality afterschool programs that engage students – regardless of gender, race/ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or minority classification. STEM Ready set out to study the effectiveness of an experiential education pedagogy approach in the design of a professional workshop for undergraduate volunteers who work directly with these marginalized populations in afterschool programs. Intergenerational Space-Holding Within Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, And Other Gender & Sexual Minority Communities, Shaun William Kevin Connors

This project examined the ways LGBTQ+ communities document, share, and connect to their histories. It supported an interactive, sensory learning-based workshop that fostered exploration and learning in LGBTQ+ and adjacent communities. The workshop was attended by a variety of participants who showed the markers of having engaged in a cultural third space while learning about and engaging with LGBTQ+ history-based information. Overall, the workshop was a resounding success and provided opportunities for further research and exploration into the connections between how people access their personal and cultural histories and what pathways are provided for them to do so.
