Push Comes To Shove: Supporting Patrons Of Color In Your Institution, Kristyn Caragher, Aisha Conner-Gaten, Tracy Drake, Tonyia Tidline

In this session, participants will explore the ways in which systems of oppression, specifically white supremacy and racism, are built into our policies and procedures. We will examine the ways in which they contribute to systemic racism and harm patrons of color. Participants will learn to diffuse difficult situations, reflect on their privileges and biases that escalate situations, and work together to come up with anti-racist strategies to move towards racial equity in our institutions.

How do youth learn through participation in efforts to study and change the school food system? Through our participatory youth action research (YPAR) project, we move beyond the "youth as consumer" frame to a food justice youth development approach. We track how a group of youth learned about food and the public policy process through their efforts to transform their own school food systems by conducting a participatory evaluation of farm-to-school efforts in collaboration with university and community partners. A new journal devoted to the broad examination of sexual exploitation, violence and slavery has been launched by a prominent University of Rhode Island professor and researcher Donna M. Hughes. Since its debut last year, the first-of-its-kind online journal Dignity has been a global success, with people from more than 100 countries downloading articles, according to URI.

Child soldiering, an unfortunate reality of war, has become increasingly common in modern warfare. With world attention focused on the genocide taking place in the Darfur region of Sudan, issues regarding the use of child soldiers in the conflict have come to light. By providing an overview of the use of child soldiers both globally and in Sudan, discussing the relevant legal norms theoretically governing the country and providing a case study on Sierra Leone, this paper ultimately provides an analysis and proposed framework for comprehensive programs that could be put into action after cessation of hostilities in an attempt …

Women used in the production of commercial pornography in the U.S. are often subjected to violence and coercion during filming. Often they protest and try to stop the filming or back-out before filming begins. Their protests are ignored or they are pressured by their agent or the director to continue. Their experiences of coercion and trickery often meet the criteria for sex trafficking.

Hiding In Plain Sight: A Practical Guide To Identifying Victims Of Trafficking In The United States, Donna M. Hughes Dr.

This practical guide focuses on identifying victims of sexual trafficking, meaning they have been
trafficked for commercial sex acts, such as prostitution or other forms of sexual exploitation, such as
stripping, lap dancing, or production of pornography. Although there are commonalities between
victims of sexual and labor trafficking, there are sufficient differences to require separate focus.
Therefore, this guide does not describe ways to identify victims who have been trafficked for forced
labor, such as domestic servants and sweat shop or migrant farm workers.
