Cultural Site Stewardship Program

  • Active stewards in the program now total 169, an increase of 497% since December 2004.
  • 11 additional major cultural site impacts resulting in measurable damages reported this quarter. Four additional impacts with somewhat lesser significance also reported in the quarter. Total impacts since December 2004 total 36 major and 12 less significant.
  • 2006 monitoring plan for Gold Butte implemented.
  • Training class on Southern Nevada Pre-history presented to 41 site stewards.

Cultural Site Stewardship Program

  • 17 new site stewards trained during the quarter. Active stewards in the program now total 167, up from 150 in last quarter.
  • Three Desert National Wildlife Refuge sites added to monitoring schedule.
  • Comprehensive monitoring plan for Sloan Canyon NCA implemented.
  • New training classes offered in GPS navigation and Clark County pre-history.
  • 3 additional major cultural site impacts resulting in measurable damages reported this quarter. Four additional impacts with somewhat lesser significance also reported in the quarter. Total impacts since December 2004 total 11 major and 12 less significant.

Not In Our Name: Reclaiming The Democratic Vision Of Small School Reform, Michelle Fine

Maybe we weren’t clear. The small schools movement was never simply about size. When committed educators and community activists in New York City, Philadelphia, Chicago, Oakland, Boston, and Cincinnati launched the movement, they were desperately seeking alternatives to the failures of big city high schools. They fashioned a vibrant, gutsy social movement for creating democratic, warm, and intellectually provocative schools, particularly for poor and working-class youth of color.

Lincoln, Nebraska, USA—HomeTown Competitiveness, a Nebraska initiative currently working in seven counties and communities in Nebraska, has been chosen as one of six recipients of grants provided through the W. K. Kellogg Foundation’s 75th Anniversary Entrepreneurship Development Systems for Rural America.

The $2 million award, over three years, was approved by the Kellogg Foundation Board of Directors meeting at Battle Creek, MI last month. More than 180 applications were received for the grants to develop six national models in rural entrepreneurship.

Three faculty members and two program directors in Women's/Gender/Men's Studies contend that Men's Studies can provide an important complement to Women's Studies programs. Positive Mood And The Perception Of Variability Within And Between Groups, Venezia Michalsen, Steven J. Stroessner, Diane M. Mackie

Department of Justice Studies Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

Three experiments investigated the effects of positive mood on perceptions of variability within and between groups. Participants formed impressions of two different and highly variable groups under a neutral or positive mood. When participants expected to learn about both groups, positive mood increased perceived intergroup similarity but did not affect perceived intragroup variability. In contrast, when participants expected to learn about only one group, judgments of intergroup and intragroup similarity were both affected by mood. Mood and the intergroup context influenced the nature and degree of information processing and resultant judgments of variability in social groups.

The article discusses the issue of inclusion of men and masculinities in the Women's Studies curriculum. Women's Studies programs were started to compensate for the male domination in the academics. Women's Studies presented a platform where scholarship for women was produced and taken seriously, female students and faculty could find their say or voice, and theoretical investigations required for the advancement of the aims of the women's movement could take place. If the academy as a whole does not sufficiently integrate Women's Studies into the curriculum, integrating Men's Studies into Women's Studies might end up further marginalizing Women's Studies by …
