An International Perspective On Active Citizenship Among Lower Secondary Students, Wolfram Schulz

Civics and Citizenship Assessment

The new IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) will investigate the extent to which young people are prepared to undertake their roles as citizens across a range of countries. ICCS will survey 13-to-14-year old students in over 30 countries in the year 2009. The ICCS outcome data will be obtained from representative samples of students in their eighth year of schooling and context data from the students, their schools and teachers. ICCS is the third international IEA study in this area and it is explicitly linked through common questions to the IEA Civic Education Study (CIVED) which was …

As the nation marked the one-year anniversary of hurricane Katrina, the clean-up work continues. This narrative recounts personal experiences of members of the Sacred Heart University faculty who accompanied a student delegation as they joined the many volunteers in Gulfport, Mississippi. The interdisciplinary group included faculty from Nursing, Psychology, Education, Media Studies, Campus Ministry, and university administration. The goal of the group was to participate in manual labor while providing emotional support for those hardest hit by the storm. Although there is a growing body of research revealing the transformative potential of participation in service-learning programs, there is no study that qualitatively examines the effects of participation in a long-term service-learning program. This study investigates this issue. Interviews were conducted with participants of a university - sponsored AmeriCorps service-learning program to examine the effects of a long-term placement on participant understanding of and commitment to social justice, multicultural competence, and civic engagement. Several participants in this study increased their awareness of inequality, but only some adopted a commitment to social justice. Four federal agencies manage seven million acres of federal lands in Southern Nevada. Increasing demands for use of these public lands has created the need for those agencies to form a unique interagency partnership and to work cooperatively in support of agency missions, protection of natural resources, and public service.

In the United States, and around the world, social capital is becoming an intriguing new focus for slowing the declining sense of community and community trust. This strengthening focus on social capital in empirical study has great potential for an important role in U.S. public policy, as policy changes focused on increasing social capital may decrease turnover.
Yet, according to researchers, not enough sufficiently tested empirical measures of social capital exist. Combining several existing measures should provide a theoretically informed measurement of social capital for turnover research with application to the U.S. Military. • The Cultural Site Stewardship Program now has 269 enrolled site stewards, an increase of 24% since March of 2006.

• Two training classes were held in 2007, adding 53 new stewards.

• Site Stewards reported 31 significant impacts during fiscal year 2007 compared to 25 impacts during the same period last year.
