Last summer I worked as the marketing intern in my father’s office, keeping mostly to myself in a small cubicle that I was proud to call my own and conversing daily with the female marketing director. Aside from her and the vice president of human resources, the office remained a sea of trimmed white hair and casually tucked in dress shirts. As such, identifying and measuring civic learning outcomes for students as well as evaluating the efficacy of civic engagement programs and teaching strategies are important (Steinberg, Hatcher & Bringle, 2011). The primary purpose of this study is to assess the civic-mindedness in students by comparing students that participate in Nonprofit Leadership Alliance (NLA) student association to non –NLA students at a comprehensive Midwestern university. The IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) investigated the preparedness and preparation of young people to ‘undertake their roles as citizens in a range of countries’ (Schulz et al., 2017, p xv). ICCS 2016 is the second cycle of ICCS with the first cycle of ICCS having been completed in 2009. In ICCS, the preparedness of young people to participate is operationalized through measures of ‘students’ knowledge and understanding of civics and citizenship as well as students’ attitudes, perceptions, and activities related to civics and citizenship (Schulz et al., 2017 p 1). This paper focuses on four attitudinal constructs: students’ endorsement of gender equality, students’ endorsement of equal rights for all ethnic and racial groups, students’ trust in civic institutions, and students’ endorsement of the influence of religion in society (which was measured as part of an international option in which most countries participated). Service-learning is a method that has been proven to instill stronger ethics in business students. Bentley University, a business school in Waltham, Massachusetts, models its Service-Learning and Civic Engagement Center after the “Students as Colleagues” framework championed by its founding Director, Dr. Edward Zlotkowski (2006). This social justice-based project used evaluated the level of understanding that students of Endicott College had regarding poverty within the United States. This project provided a space for students to communicate with each other using discussion questions about poverty to guide the conversations. All students were given the chance to participate in an online simulation during class that provided them with an opportunity to live in someone else's shoes for thirty days, after losing their housing. Citing the inflammatory rhetoric of public figures, a growing body of literature documents a dramatic increase in bias-­‐related bullying and feelings of anxiety in K-12 schools across the country since the 2016 election. For this project, a facilitate discussion on mental health and art as an outlet for one’s emotions occurred at Elevated Thought, a youth and social justice organization in Lawrence, Massachusetts. In 2010, Kenya introduced a new constitution and with it the introduction of the concept of a decentralized government. The devolved system of government was implemented in 2013 and granted each of the 47 counties in Kenya, such as Kisumu County, greater autonomy, resources and ability to serve its people. This study aims to compile a thorough understanding of people’s perception on how devolution has impacted transparency, accountability and service delivery of the government of Kisumu County, Kenya within its five years.
